I sometimes wonder how world history would have looked if the shooter had aimed a little more to the right…… But really, we should probably just be grateful for these increasingly desperate and counterproductive outbursts from this worst of all presidents, as this is unlikely to help the reps in the upcoming election…. something of a swan song….

Let this be the starting point in relation to our position in the USA-Ukraine relationship. Let Trump try to form a coalition with Russia, whose GDP is a fraction of Europe’s combined, and see (fafo) what his countrymen think about the change of trade partner. In connection with a total boycott, Europe can take the opportunity to redeem government treasury bills. Economic resources and means of pressure are not lacking. But is there, or is there a lack of backbone? It is now time to prove it!

The announcement came at the same time as a Ukrainian delegation met with the American envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in Florida.

“I have just concluded a very successful conversation with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, where we agreed that Russia will immediately deliver over 300,000 tons of diesel to the American and global market,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

He further wrote that Russia will deliver 500,000 tons of diesel in November and then another million tons.

Points out two reasons

The response from Ukraine’s President Zelenskyy came quickly:

“I assess that our delegation is only being used as a smokescreen. And that is really not fair,” he wrote in a statement through the Ukrainian embassy in the USA.

Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson is also critical of the deal.

“We regret the US agreement with Russia on diesel deliveries, as energy revenues are central to the Russian war chest,” he writes on X.

Trump is doing this now for two reasons, believes military expert Johan Huovinen from the Swedish Defence University.

– One is to keep fuel prices down, which ultimately stresses the American economy. Since the attempt at the Strait of Hormuz failed, this becomes a way to get more fuel out on the international markets.

The goal is to lower interest rates and inflation in the USA, says Huovinen.

He describes the move as “a punch in the stomach for the EU,” which is in the process of phasing out Russian oil and gas.

Proposal for de-escalation

The second reason the USA wants to buy Russian diesel now is to invite Russia back onto the world market.

– This becomes a way to signal to Russia that if you behave and stop the war in Ukraine, you can come back. This is the first signal of a normalization of the Russian-American relationship.

– For Putin, this is good. It is probably the best he has heard in a year, says Huovinen.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov states that Trump also put forward a proposal for de-escalation in the Ukraine war during the conversation with Putin. The proposal is said to have been received favorably by Putin.

But Huovinen does not believe that the agreement between the USA and Russia will lead to any peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.

– I find it hard to see that. So far there are no indications that they are ready to sit at the negotiating table. It would then have to be American pressure that could make it happen.

Early Saturday morning, at least twelve people were killed in a Russian attack on Zaporizhzhia. On X, Volodymyr Zelenskyy writes that Russia “expressed its gratitude for the lifting of sanctions on diesel exports by dropping five glide bombs on residential buildings in Zaporizhzhia.”
