Yes, Starmer’s narrative regarding his flip-flopping on the US’s access to bases may be legally watertight, but it mostly appears as a concession to pressure. In his defense, he has a difficult situation to handle domestically with failed by-elections, Epstein stuff, and avoiding revolt from the Labour’s left-wing faction.

If one is to believe a source that I am somewhat doubtful about, but who writes passionately, something similar was going on with Keith Starmer, but $aker got in the way.

“On February 19, 2026, the United Kingdom blocked the United States from using RAF Fairford and Diego Garcia for strikes on Iran.

The reason given was international law.

Government lawyers advised that participating in strikes without clear legal justification could constitute a breach. Prime Minister Keir Starmer personally denied the request. Trump retaliated within hours, withdrawing American support for Starmer’s £35 billion Chagos Islands handover deal with Mauritius, writing on Truth Social: “Prime Minister Starmer should not lose control, for any reason, of Diego Garcia.”

Ten days later, Starmer reversed the decision entirely.

On the evening of March 1, the Prime Minister issued a statement published on GOV.UK granting US access to British bases for what he called “that specific and limited defensive purpose” of destroying Iranian missile launch sites and storage depots. He announced that the government was publishing a summary of its legal advice, stating that the basis of the decision was “collective self-defence” and that it was “in accordance with international law.””
