Brigadier General Hennadii Shapovalov is the new Commander of the Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

The Land Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine have been headed by Hennadii Shapovalov, a representative of a new generation of Ukrainian officers who has extensive combat experience and is also familiar with the organisation of a military structure according to NATO standards: he previously worked at the Alliance’s Support and Training Coordination Mission (NSATU).

Hennadii Shapovalov was born in 1978 in Kirovohrad region.

He graduated from the Institute of Tank Troops at Kharkiv State Polytechnic University and the Command and Staff Institute for the Use of Troops (Forces) at the National Defence University of Ukraine. He also studied at the U.S. Army War College, which trains senior officers of the U.S. Army.

As a combat officer, Hennadii Shapovalov has gone through all levels of military service, from tank platoon commander to commander of the famous 59th Separate Motorised Infantry Brigade named after Yakov Handziuk.

In April 2024, Hennadii Shapovalov was appointed Commander of the South Operational Command. At the same time, he commanded the Tavria operational group of troops (until February 2025).

After that, Brigadier General Shapovalov headed the Ukrainian team in the NATO Mission to coordinate the supply of military assistance to Ukraine (Wiesbaden, Germany).
