Ukraine struck Russian cruise missile ship in Lake Onega

The Russian missile ship “Grad” was hit by Ukrainian fire of some kind on Lake Onega in the Republic of Karelia at 04:31 local time on October 4, according to SSO.

“The missile ship was on its way from the Baltic Sea to the Caspian Sea. The damages occurred on the right side of the ship’s engine room. Further details are being investigated,” SSO stated in a release.

Russian forces have reportedly deployed cavalry units in attack operations against Ukrainian positions, marking a return to a tactic long considered outdated.

According to Defence Blog on October 4th, Ukrainian forces confirmed https://defence-blog.com/ukrainian-drone-strike-destroys-russian-cavalry-unit/ that such a unit was attacked and destroyed by a precision drone strike during a recent offensive.

The mounted troops later dismounted their horses and tried to use them as cover, a move that proved ineffective under aerial surveillance.

“The horses are of course a pity… But however you look at it, it’s a combat unit. Sad – yes. But the work is being done – to reduce the number of human casualties,” Ukrainian soldiers said after the attack, according to Defence Blog.

Analysts cited by the news channel suggest that Moscow’s use of cavalry units reflects a combination of tactical improvisation and desperation.

Mounted troops may have been deployed to navigate difficult terrain or to avoid detection by conventional reconnaissance systems, but the tactic also highlights the ethical issues surrounding the use of animals in warfare.

As Defence Blog points out, Russia has a history of using animals for military purposes. The Russian navy has trained beluga whales and dolphins for sabotage missions, while dogs have been equipped with explosives to attack armored vehicles.

Ukrainian officials argue that the use of horses in active combat continues this pattern and demonstrates a lack of respect for humanitarian norms and laws on armed conflicts.

Earlier, The Moscow Times reported on September 30th that Russian forces in the occupied Donetsk region had begun training horse-mounted assault teams under a commander with the codename “Khan.”

The initiative, described by Kremlin-friendly blogger Semyon Pegov, aims to create two-man cavalry units that can operate in rugged terrain and avoid detection. This marks Russia’s first revival of cavalry tactics since such formations were disbanded in 1955.

Overall, no major efforts on any other fronts than just Pokrovsk/Novopavlivka. And the reason for that pressure may be partly the goals from above but also to keep the pressure up because Ukraine has deployed significant capacity there, and if the pressure is released, there is a risk of collapse. So, it may be that the Russians are maintaining high pressure in Pokrovsk/Novopavlivka purely for defensive purposes. However, recent Russian front line movements in the past month do not support this scenario:
