The best thing we can do is realize we didn’t win on a mandate because people love Democrats. We won on a mandate because people cannot stand Trump and Trumpism. So, we need to take action to stand up for them.

I want us to step back and ask: How do you get to equal rights to peace, dignity, and self-determination for these peoples? How do you make sure our tax dollars aren’t spent doing genocide and apartheid or making war we have no business fighting?

How do we take those equal rights seriously? And how do we make sure that we’re holding ourselves accountable to international law? And it’s not just about Israel. I take the same approach to Egypt, where my family immigrated from. I take the same approach to Pakistan and to Jordan.

We’re bigger than in America, where we pretend that somehow scoring political points is worth undercutting your own morals. You know, J.D. understands that America is big enough.

His own family proves it. And I think it’s a great thing to have mixed families. I have one. My wife is also Indian American. My family is Egyptian American. And that’s America.

What’s frustrating to me is to pretend that somehow only some people get to be American, and that you can go after people because of the color of their skin or how they pray, and that that should be politically legitimate.

Even when you understand the value of an America big enough to include people who don’t look like you or pray like you. So I hope that someday he and I get to have an honest conversation about that, because I’m for a politics of honesty and inclusion.

I don’t know why he’s so against it when he’s benefited from a more inclusive America himself. **
