Distinguished speakers, Madam President, distinguished Prime Minister, distinguished members of the Parliament of Greece, Greek people, kalimera. For more than a month now, every morning of mine begins with Mariupol. With what is happening in this Ukrainian city, which the Russian troops are simply destroying. There has been nothing like this in the history of Europe throughout all the years after the Second World War. That some city be reduced to ashes, destroyed completely. That it be blockaded and its residents be killed by hunger, by force. This was a city of half a million. About one hundred thousand people still remain in it. But there is practically not a single undamaged building. The absolute majority of buildings in the city are completely destroyed. Russian military destroyed everything. They blew up hospitals, a maternity ward, residential buildings. They even blew up the city theater, in which peaceful residents were hiding from the bombs. And next to which there were inscriptions, everyone saw them. The inscriptions: children. Inscriptions that the Russian pilots saw. And which did not stop them from an airstrike. Mariupol is almost destroyed. I am sure. Each of you has already seen how the city looks now. After the Russian Federation approached it. Just ruins. This is what Russia has done to our peaceful Mariupol.<\/p>\n

But also your peaceful Mariupol\u2014this city has always been home to a large Greek community. The Ukrainian Greek community is one of the largest in the world. For centuries, our peoples lived side by side. For centuries, they raised children. Built the future. The connection between Ukraine and Greece is so ancient that it is now impossible to find its beginning. Greek poleis. On our Black Sea coast. Cultural exchange and trade. Coexistence of communities. All this is thousands of years of history. The Greek Chersonesus was depicted even on our national currency. On the hryvnia. It is precisely with Greece that the development of Christianity is linked, and not only in our state, but in our region in general. Ukraine is one of the largest Orthodox countries. And the baptism was brought by the Greeks. If someone tried to tear the Greek roots out of Ukrainian history and culture, we would lose a fundamental part of ourselves. Similarly, for you, basic things of your history, of your national self-perception, are linked to the Ukrainian land. Freedom or death. These words now reflect not only our struggle against Russia's attempt to subjugate Ukraine. This is a part of your identity, which originates from our Odesa. Another southern city of Ukraine, which Russia may try to destroy. Just like Mariupol.<\/p>\n

When your foreign minister was in Odesa last week, the city was experiencing the consequences of Russian shelling. Another missile attack\u2014today there are no shots in Odesa. But why? Only because our armed forces, the armed forces of Ukraine, are deterring Russian attacks and repelling the barbaric Russian troops from their long-standing, Russian-leadership-approved direction of offensive towards Odesa. Russian troops have now brought death and destruction to where Ukrainians and Greeks enjoyed peace and prosperity for centuries. Moreover, Russia has begun a new deportation of people from the south of Ukraine. Already, at least tens of thousands of our people have been deported to the territory of Russia and to the territories of Ukraine temporarily occupied by it. These are residents of Mariupol and other cities and communities that came under the attacks of Russian troops. This forced resettlement of people by Russia is far from the first, both for Greeks and for Ukrainians. But the Russian state is carrying it out now as if this deportation is not the last. Russia is absolutely confident in its impunity for everything it does. And we must stop this. We must hold Russia accountable. We must save Odesa from the destruction that Mariupol suffered. We must find all the people deported by Russia. We must save at least those in Mariupol who are still alive and who can be saved.<\/p>\n

Ladies and gentlemen, Greek people, the Filiki Eteria created in our Odesa played such a role in the history of your state that it is impossible to overstate. I call upon you now to openly create such a new union of friends that can save the Ukrainians and Greeks of the south of our state. Which can help Mariupol. The city needs humanitarian aid. The city needs the rescue of people from there, survivors and the wounded. Russia has been blockading Mariupol since the beginning of March. Blockading it on land and at sea. Not letting in even basic humanitarian cargo. I am sure that the power of Greece can help realize this mission. Every day counts. And now I ask you to listen not only to me regarding the fate of this city. I ask you to listen to two defenders of Mariupol, who are there now, right there. And together with their fellow soldiers are trying to stop the Russian offensive. Listen to two Ukrainians, but also to two Greeks. One of them is forced to appear in a mask, not showing his face, because his relatives, his parents, are in one of the towns occupied by the Russians. I hope you will understand. Please, show their appeals.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Kali mera, esteemed member of the parliament of the Republic of Greece. I am addressing you, Mikhail, an ethnic Greek. My grandfather Viktor Mykhailovych fought against the German Nazis in the Second World War. He was wounded three times. Now I am fighting against Russian Nazism. Now I am one of those defending my hometown Mariupol, where I was born and raised. In the ranks of the AZOV regiment. Should I speak of the difficulties of this struggle with the enemy? As a soldier and a son of my land, I think I should not. This is my duty as a man and a citizen. But I cannot fail to mention the catastrophic, inhuman conditions in which the civilian inhabitants of my city have found themselves. You know, Mariupol is a piece of Greece in Ukraine. In terms of cultural and ethnic origin. Therefore, you have always helped this city. Including, thanks to you, it flourished. Now, this city is destroyed by 90% by the Russian occupiers. Since March 1, it has been completely cut off from the outside world. There is no water, no food, no medicines in the city. There is a humanitarian catastrophe in the city. The enemy is bombing with aviation and civilian neighborhoods. Constantly shelling with artillery. Launching missile strikes from the sea. People are dying by the thousands. There is no one to bury them. Including the bodies of ethnic Greeks. Do you understand?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Kalimera, fellow countrymen. My name is Anastas and I am also an ethnic Greek. And I am now with the defenders of Mariupol. I ask that you listen to me now. Hundreds of people are dying under the rubble right now and there is no one to help. The enemy is not letting people out of the city and we have no way to save them. What can you do? Speak, including, about your own people. About the small Ukrainian Greek children who have lost their parents and are dying under the rubble. You already have the courage to withstand the significantly superior forces of the enemy. Do you have enough courage to ask for monetary aid for the civilian population of Mariupol? These are your people too. Help save them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Speaker 2<\/p>\n

I am grateful to Greece for the humanitarian and defense support already provided to Ukraine. I am grateful for the support of the general sanctions policy of the democratic world. But the war continues. The destruction of Mariupol continues; you have heard these heroes. The deportation of people from those territories where the Russian troops have arrived continues. I call upon you to use the influence of your state and your capabilities as a member of the European Union to organize the rescue of Mariupol. I call upon you to do more so that Russia begins to seek peace and abandons even the dreams of conquering Ukraine. Because this war, which Russia started against us, actually destroys everything that Ukrainians and Greeks have created together over a long time. What will remain after the Russian artillery and Russian aerial bombs? I will tell you, they will destroy this common history of ours, our common heritage. And we will not be able to be satisfied with saying in the future that Mariupol is the new Thermopylae, where heroes fell, stopping a numerically superior enemy army. Now we can save our heroes. And we can also cast the enemy Russian troops away from our Ukrainian land. We can once and for all teach both Russia and any other potential aggressors that those who choose war always lose. Those who try to deprive states of independence and destroy their territorial integrity always lose. Those who blackmail Europe with an economic or energy crisis always lose. Let's be honest, Russia's actions from the beginning were directed not only at Ukraine, but at Europe as a whole. Russia is doing everything so that Europeans are left without affordable energy. And so that energy poverty becomes a new reality on the continent. It is Russia that does everything to provoke a surge of inflation for many peoples. Last year, Russia artificially created a deficit in the European gas market. And now it is doing everything to artificially create a deficit in the global food market. This is a matter of honor for Europeans. The honor to respond to such a policy of the Russian Federation. While Russian troops block peaceful cities and deport our people, no Russian bank has the right to earn money from connections with the global financial system. They must all be blocked, all of them, not just a part. While this senseless and cruel war continues, no Russian vessel has the right to enter the ports of the democratic world. Why help them? So that they make even more money for missiles and bombs to destroy not only Mariupol, but also Odesa and other of our Ukrainian cities. And first and foremost, no support for Russian tankers, these oil tankers that provide Russia with a constant flow of money for killings. Ukraine needs weapons to force the Russian troops to leave our state. In particular, air defense systems, artillery systems and shells for them, armored vehicles and other things that everyone in the West knows perfectly well. The faster Ukraine receives this help, the more lives we will be able to save in Ukraine, and one more historical point. Our peoples have not only always been, but will always be closely linked. I believe that we will be able to bring peace to our Ukrainian land. We will be able to bring to justice all those responsible for these war crimes against Ukrainians, against Greeks, and against all other people who became victims of the Russian military. We will be able to rebuild Mariupol and all other Ukrainian communities, where Ukrainians and Greeks will live just as peacefully and with respect for each other as they did before. But I also believe that very soon Ukraine and Greece will live as equals in our common European home, in the European Union. I believe this, I know this. We will defeat them all, but only together.
