The Ukrainian surveillance channels Supernova+ and Exilenova+ reported that Ukrainian drones have attacked the Samara Linear Production and Dispatch Station in the city of Prosvet, about 835 kilometers northeast of the Ukrainian border. Eyewitness footage from local residents shows smoke rising over the city in the early morning light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Prosvet facility, an important node in Russia’s oil pipeline network, consists of pumping stations, tank farms, and blending stations. According to the Ukrainian General Staff, the station blends oil from Western Siberia and other oil-producing regions in Russia to produce export fuel for the Russian armed forces.
It is one of Russia’s largest oil hubs, covering 262 hectares (2.62 km2) and housing 71 major oil tanks with a capacity of 1.6 million cubic meters. That is about 1.4 million tons, which corresponds to one day of Russia’s entire oil production (which is about 500 MT while refineries process about 250 – 350 MT\/year depending on the year considered). Because the facility is large, it is naturally difficult to destroy the entire stockpile, but operations are largely halted. On October 7, several large fires broke out at the facility following a previous attack, and on October 10 there was another attack if I recall correctly (though I don’t think it was clear whether there was any damage then).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Considering how large the facility is, the oil throughput must be enormous. If operations are forced to stop after the attacks, that is probably a much bigger problem than burning a few thousand liters of oil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia’s defense has announced that a flying object briefly penetrated the country’s airspace near the border with Russia and Belarus on November 1.
“Take action!” wrote the Latvian military on X. “We inform you that there is a threat in Latvian airspace. Go indoors, follow the two-wall principle! Follow official announcements. If you see a low-flying or suspicious object, do not approach it.” The intrusion occurred around the border towns of Kraslava and Ludza in southeastern Latvia. Less than an hour after the first announcement, the Latvian military declared that the intrusion had ended and the threat had disappeared. It is still unknown where the drone came from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
