10:15 \u2013 Johan No.1<\/h2>\n

Now the huge offensive with extra everything is on the agenda again.<\/p>\n

Firstly, there have been offensive operations since January 6 and almost continuously since then, the Russians lost 50,000 in January and are working to top that by a wide margin in February.<\/p>\n

Secondly, at least I am led to believe by all these warnings that what we see now is nothing compared to the (*very large numbers) that will storm across the fields on (*any date a few weeks ahead) in a unified scream.<\/p>\n

This is as Russian as it gets, painting something big and unpleasant. Then Ukraine probably wants materiel and paints broadly too, it seems even patience itself\u2014Uffe\u2014started to get tired of the Ukrainian car dealers (who in desperation fight for their children’s right not to be tortured and murdered)?<\/p>\n

The materiel that the Ukrainian listed yesterday I consider to be all remaining materiel \u2013 1800 tanks and 3950 IFVs is quite reasonable. Of many of those moving forward, however, we do not know \u2013 there should be at least 30% with technical faults in the rear?<\/p>\n

2700 artillery, 810 multiple launch rocket systems, 400 fighter jets and 300 helicopters \u2013 also quite reasonable compared to Ukrainian Forbes.<\/p>\n

Have you thought about what Ukraine has, it’s not like they have zero here and the attacking party should have 3:1 to have any chance to succeed and the Russians have always thought more than that because they have high self-awareness, do they even have anything close to that now \u2013 no \ud83d\ude00<\/p>\n

Then I wonder if KOS talked about the numbers for the Ukrainian army, not territorial and NG, and if so I completely agree, a bit high almost. I lump them all together for the simple reason that they are capable maneuver brigades from all three branches now. He said around 250,000 for the army and if you add territorial and NG on top of that we are up to good numbers.<\/p>\n

Over time, the intensity will presumably increase in northern Luhansk, having pushed in 125,000 men they probably want to do something with them \u2013 it will get messy.<\/p>\n

At the southern front, they should also send out wave 3, wave 4, etc. Maybe sending more sacrifices per round?<\/p>\n

Then I want to remind that we discussed that in the forests south of Kreminna the trees would sway a little and a thousand VDV went in and none out. What happened, yes we are flooded with videos of burning vehicles in the forests south of Kreminna. Who took the videos\u2026
\nThen the Twitter rumor goes that it was not VDV but LPR units. But if I interpret this correctly many VDV regiments are still leading in northern Luhansk and down by Soledar \u2013 Bakhmut.<\/p>\n

We have certainly illuminated the front from Kupiansk to Vasylivka all February so the Russians are burning through their last capable units at rocket speed, this is visible if nothing else in the loss figures. <\/p>\n

At Vuhledar the 72nd brigade is probably out of combat now after the big day of chaos, they have 2+2 brigades more in the area, 8 BTGs(?) \u2013 after that reinforcements are needed, again.
\nIt also seems that one of the DPR special units, 14th Brigade(?) has been wiped out according to Twitter rumors.<\/p>\n

If you have watched all the videos it is during the advance before they have reached the line that they are knocked out, either just by artillery or when they get stuck in minefields.
\nThere is very little close combat and exclusively on columns from what I have seen.
\nTo me that means entire brigades have been knocked out by indirect fire before they even got near the defense\/trench systems.<\/p>\n

Additionally, Ukraine has consolidated its positions at Vuhledar further now, it was probably not very difficult to shovel away the remnants.<\/p>\n

What happens when the Russians come within range of direct tank fire, at one of the defense lines A, B, C there is a Ukrainian tank waiting for its turn, and they are getting bored.<\/p>\n

Behind the southern front there are 3 VDV regiments that Defmon has not managed to place. They are not in defense at the Dnieper and he presumably has not seen them fly past on other fronts.
\nThey could be offensive reserve for the southern front?<\/p>\n

There is absolutely offensive capacity at the southern front but how can it go better than at Vuhledar?<\/p>\n

Hard to count numbers, and you have to exclude the brigades that are in defense, but presumably along the southern front towards the Dnieper there are at least three times the numbers they have at Vuhledar + the VDV reserve if that is where they are.
\n-then the offensive capacity at the southern front is finished and if UA wants they can start shooting away the defense with all indirect fire they have to get a breakthrough and the remaining task forces are then no threat.<\/p>\n

Yesterday the question came up why I keep talking about northern Luhansk and it is because of the terrain and that they have pushed in 125,000 in a small area.<\/p>\n

Now everyone knows that down in Bakhmut and Soledar it is the dominant terrain that Ukraine holds and the Russians run around between the hills and die in droves.<\/p>\n

In northern Luhansk it is quite flat, there are short distances between forest-field-community and numbers can make a difference.
\nUkraine has quite recently pushed into the area and they have worked their way forward towards a breakthrough in Kreminna \u2013 the defense is not as prepared as further south.<\/p>\n

South of Kreminna there is one big forest that was difficult for the Russians to hold and then presumably difficult for UA to hold if there is high density of attacking Russians up from the pit in screaming high-knee attacks westward.<\/p>\n

On top of that they can attack straight from the north and go south along the Oskil river, and drive wedges westward anywhere between the NS line that goes through Svatove. Had UA taken Kreminna and Svatove already it would have looked different and better defense.<\/p>\n

If there is a bigger offensive UA will have to fall back to the Oskil river which is a defense line they can definitely hold because the terrain is favorable. Right now it seems the Russians\u2019 couple of wedges have gotten stuck in the middle at the Zherebets river (if I go by defense-artillery reports) and have not exactly rolled through the forests south of Kreminna unscathed.<\/p>\n

This hits both ways, as soon as the Russians become immobile in this terrain it hits back on them directly \u2013 few roads and good terrain for Ukraine to infiltrate in so then it becomes Suomussalmi 2.0 instead and the month is both cold and wet in a beautiful mix and a few weeks without men on top of that can work wonders.<\/p>\n

One thing I have learned from this war is how easy it is for psyops to gain a foothold. Now it is clear but in twilight it is probably harder to identify.
\nThe other is that democracies are vulnerable but they are also unbeatable so the dips are always manageable.<\/p>\n

If we back up and take a good look at the sandbox in plan-view the Russians attacked on February 24 with 190,000 men and they were contract soldiers.
\nNow they will try to repeat the fiasco with 326,000 men of which +150,000 are newly mobilized in various stages and they have maintenance problems and the offensive is poorly planned, because it is.
\nIt can only go one way here.<\/p>\n

What they should have done is mobilize the million starting in January and push them into defense after a month of training. The reason they don’t do this is probably \u2013
\n-risk of revolution
\n-impossible to maintain
\n-impossible to arm.<\/p>\n

Operation Storm went quite quickly so it’s hard to hope for four days and unfortunately we have a whole season of impassable roads ahead of us which, if the Russians manage to maintain momentum, will be a burden on our yellow-blue heroes.
\nBut as soon as the ground holds in spring and Ukraine can regain the initiative, it will go fast\u2014I\u2019ll bet one of Pasiikiivi\u2019s five-hundreds on that.<\/p>\n

Northern Luhansk has every chance to be like the New Year’s attack on Grozny or the annexation of Czechoslovakia; there are too many troops in too small an area and too unfavorable terrain for them to hold this effectively, it simply won\u2019t work.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I get a bit confused regarding northern Luhansk? The first time you mention it, it sounds like the terrain is unfavorable for Ukraine and that the Russians have an advantage if they come with large numbers.
\nThen in the last paragraph it sounds more like the opposite? Do you think the Russians initially have an advantage that then turns into chaos?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

If the Russians stop, it becomes an advantage for UA with ranger warfare.<\/p>\n

RU forward \u2013 negative for UA<\/p>\n

RU passive and still \u2013 positive for UA.<\/p>\n

For a while it can be tough, but as soon as the Russian offensive stops, infiltrating units arrive and then the Russians have a hard time.<\/p>\n

Otherwise, it\u2019s bearing ground that should apply since before Christmas it was still due to that, and in all other wars in history in this terrain, the muddy seasons have been impassable.<\/p>\n

The cold is definitely on UA\u2019s side and even if there isn\u2019t much movement in northern Luhansk with poor ground bearing, SOF have no problem wreaking havoc and the Russians get wet and cold.<\/p>\n

They have always gone first, had the worst equipment, and been sacrificed before everyone else.<\/p>\n

There are special units like Kaskad, Somali, and a few others who probably survived.<\/p>\n

In the maneuver brigades\/BTGs, they have probably filled up largely with newly mobilized.<\/p>\n

Wild guess, 40,000 \u2013 50,000 maybe, there are enough brigades so that number seems reasonable?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
