The Russian losses:

  • 1030 KIA
  • 8 Tanks
  • 5 APVs
  • 42 Artillery systems
  • 1 MLRS
  • 114 UAVs
  • 136 Vehicles & Fuel tanks

Some statistics from Ragnar that we rarely look at but are still interesting:

Combat engagement:

Russian officers:

Strike ratio:

Approximate value of Russia’s hardware losses. It may not sound like much considering that Russia’s military budget today is at 140 billion USD per year, but these are only losses at the fronts. The total budget includes so much more.

  1. AFU: In total, during the past day, 174 clashes were recorded.
Yesterday, the enemy launched a missile strike at the positions of Ukrainian units and settlements, using three missiles and 114 air strikes, dropping 202 controlled aviation bombs. In addition, he carried out almost 5000 shells, including 124 from jet fire systems, and deployed 2494 kamikadze drones for impression.
  2. More tanks than APVs today again. Artillery losses can just as well reflect a high number of attacks as rear combat. So high but not very high. Seen such levels before.

At least one third of the personnel losses are accounted for by Pokrovsk according to last night’s update from 10:00 PM on April 26, 2025, about the Russian invasion:

“According to preliminary estimates, Ukrainian forces have neutralized 330 occupiers in the [Pokrovsk] sector, 185 of them irreversibly. Our defenders also destroyed seven vehicles, 34 motorcycles, a self-propelled artillery system, 14 UAVs, and a UAV control antenna, and seriously damaged 10 vehicles, a self-propelled artillery system, and a hostile cannon.”

Pokrovsk accounted for 62/162 attacks at the time, i.e., just over a third.

    1. Pokrovsk is clearly a priority for the Russians, and now that Ukraine seems to have left Kursk, it will be interesting to see if one or both sides will dare to redistribute resources, for example, to Pokrovsk or possibly to other front sections.

Ideally, I would have liked to see Ukraine have the resources to enter Russia again but in some other place along the border. Partly to force Russia to continue to tie up troops on that side and partly to once again show that Russia is not invulnerable.

At the same time, Ukraine has a major advantage when it comes to logistics down at the southern and eastern fronts. In the north, that advantage does not exist as Russia is as close to the front as Ukraine.

When they entered Kursk, Russia was initially caught off guard and it took surprisingly long before they could put up a proper resistance, despite it being on their home turf.
I see that as a clear proof that they do not have access to any major reserves at all and that there is a significant sluggishness within their army. An attack further north in Russia might therefore work for a while. It doesn’t need to be as ambitious as in Kursk, a smaller pinprick attack that then withdraws could be enough.

      1. But Kursk is not abandoned. Even Johan#1 has been talking about this for a while.

In response to the rumors, AFU published the following (auto-translation) yesterday:

“Since the beginning of the Kursk operation for the Ukrainian defense forces, from 06.08.2024, the Russian army’s losses in the operational area for the Kursk group of forces are as follows: personnel – 62.4 thousand people, of which 25.2 thousand are irrecoverable and 36.2 thousand are medical personnel.
Additionally, 983 soldiers from the attacker’s army were captured. As a result, exchanges took place, allowing hundreds of our soldiers to return home from Russian captivity.
The total losses for the North Korean army in the Kursk direction amount to more than four and a half thousand dead and wounded.
        The fight continues.”

      2. Forgive, there are probably still Ukrainian soldiers left and maybe one should not jump to conclusions. As long as DeepStateMap shows that they are holding a Russian area, that should be what matters.
But what I write otherwise still feels relevant regardless.

    2. MXT: “I see that as a clear sign that they do not have access to any larger reserves at all and that there is a great inertia within their army. An attack further north in Russia might therefore work for a while. It doesn’t need to be as ambitious as in Kursk, it could be enough with smaller pinpricks that then withdraw again.”

Yes, one could imagine a “Kursk” in the area in southeastern Baltics that Johan #1 has flagged as a potential target for a Russian attack and a test of NATO. Kursk was indeed an “attack against the best defense” where preparations were seen and a Russian attack was expected against the Sumy region(?).

Edit: of course, it will be NATO that will carry out that operation, or “lease out” the border area in Lithuania 🇱🇹 to Ukraine…

      1. Ah, now you’re thinking one step further!
It would actually be really interesting if it happened. Russia would get the jitters and the question is what their next step would be.

Hon studerade hemligt vid en ukrainsk skola och lärde sig det ukrainska språket – och höll det hemligt för sina föräldrar. Hon började fullt ut förstå verkligheten av kriget efter samtal med en pojke från Kyiv.”

  10. Landmines are of course a misery as they also affect civilians for many years afterwards, but the alternative is even worse especially if the opponent doesn’t care.

“Non-governmental organizations warn that several European countries want to withdraw from the treaty on landmines, reports The Guardian.

Finland, Poland, and the Baltic states want to withdraw from the Ottawa Convention of 1997 that prohibits the use of landmines. The background is the threat from Russia. But critics argue that landmines do “horrible things to innocent people,” and they have facts to support it. Between 70 and 85 percent of those who die annually from landmines are civilians, the newspaper writes.”

    1. The Russian is probably doing even worse “terrible things to innocent people”.
The choice is either we mine the border or the Russians come over the border and mine.

“Earlier this week, Tesla’s stock surged following Elon Musk’s promise to scale back involvement in Doge and instead focus more on Tesla.

However, the problems persist, writes Forbes, pointing to the decline in electric car sales, increased competition, and a damaged brand.

Automotive analyst Glenn Mercer at GM Automotive highlights that introducing a completely new model would be a measure to boost revenues, but instead, the Tesla team has focused on updated versions of the Model Y and Model 3.
    – Leaving these models on the market indefinitely without major changes makes them, somewhat exaggeratedly, “zombies,” he says.”

  15. Previously wrote that it was strange that Trump wasn’t forming closer ties with North Korea since he seems to appreciate dictators. It took a week and now we’re there, with Sweden’s help?!!!?

“The Trump administration has secretly discussed resuming contact with North Korea and, with the help of experts in the field, has explored the possibilities for a meeting, according to several sources to Axios. No direct contacts are said to have occurred between the White House and North Korea, but it goes through the Swedish embassy in Pyongyang. Sweden represents U.S. interests in the Asian country, and recently Ambassador Andreas Bengtsson is said to have visited Washington.”

At least seven Russian businessmen and officials who are subject to sanctions by the European Union, the United States, or Ukraine over Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine have acquired Maltese passports through the country’s “golden visa” program, according to a Financial Times investigation on April 27.

These individuals are part of a broader group of 16 people who successfully purchased Maltese citizenship, despite facing sanctions or previous criminal convictions.
