Russian losses in Ukraine 2025-04-20

Today there were slightly lower losses, maybe there has still been a bit of “Easter peace”?
It is not uncommon to see lower losses during any of the holidays so that could just as well be a factor.
Looking at AFU’s report on the number of clashes, etc. it does not indicate decreased intensity.

  • 950 KWIA
  • 1 Tank
  • 5 APVs
  • 49 Artillery systems

    1. 👍 It looks like a lot has happened at the frontlines after all, which doesn’t quite match the low KWIA loss report. Still Pokrovsk where it’s most intense.

      1. Yes, at least it doesn’t seem like Putin has declared a unilateral ceasefire.
        Warmonitor:
Putin declared an Easter truce according to Russian media. It is reported that the Russian side is stopping all military actions from 18:00 on April 19 to 00:00 on April 21.

  2. IN THE NIGHT:
Thank you for noticing that the link wasn’t working yesterday.
Now you can Swish from your mobile by clicking on the image.

      1. I can already say that you would have made a good bet if you had bet everything on the opposite. Who could have thought that the Moscow State lied?

    1. Low armor indicates a meat attack. Without vehicles and poorly equipped – likely without communication radios, sometimes not even weapons, and some only with crutches – it takes time to get from UFA to the front line. A detour must be made at least a day in advance. And Putin came with the message the same day. Perhaps we will see the effects in tomorrow’s report?

      1. Good point, if Russian officers are also stiff and have difficulty taking their own initiatives, it can certainly take a very long time before it has reached everyone through a long chain of command.

  3. “Rep. Joe Wilson slams Putin’s Easter “truce” as fake: “History will remember Putin as a weak and pitiful man. A war criminal bombing playgrounds & Christian bakeries, all while pretending to seek peace. He could end this invasion today—but chooses not to.””

  4. “There have been provocations from the Russian side. Russian media are reporting explosions in temporarily occupied Donetsk. They blame Ukraine.”

  5. “The key thing to understand, as this week highlighted, is that the US and Russia have reached a common position on most of the major points, and are now trying to bully Ukraine and Europe to accept them. The US-Russia Pact is basically in place.”

    1. Absolutely disgusting. By what right does the USA consider itself some kind of supreme authority in the world that can just run over sovereign countries like Ukraine?

  6. Russia prepares to push toward Kostiantynivka in Donetsk Oblast, monitoring group says. Russian troops are solidifying their presence in the village of Kalynove in Donetsk Oblast as they prepare for an advance toward Stara Mykolaivka and the road to Kostiantynivka, Ukrainian monitoring group DeepState reported on April 18.

    #Toretsk

March 20 — April 20, 2025. Troop concentrations in Kalynove located at the front line in the lower left corner.

    https://kyivindependent.com/russia-prepares-push-toward-kostiantynivka-in-donetsk-oblast-monitoring-group-says/

    1. Considering that Kostiantynivka is already largely surrounded, it is probably true. Unfortunately, the Russians have several times managed to expand to the point where they could eventually close in. I hope Ukraine can resist.

  7. “A test facility connected to the construction of the Stockholm Bypass has been hacked, reports SR Ekot. The facility tests technology that controls cameras, barriers, and digital signs.

In an internal report commissioned by the Swedish Transport Administration, cybercriminals or foreign powers such as Russia, China, and Iran are identified as potential perpetrators.

    – One can imagine that there are actors who want to steal the technology to prepare for attacks, for example, against infrastructure, says cybersecurity expert André Catrý to Ekot.”

  8. “South Korea’s acting president Han Duck-soo announces that the country will not retaliate against US tariffs, but instead seeks a ‘win-win’ solution in upcoming talks, writes the Financial Times.

He refers to the historical debt South Korea owes to the US after the Korean War, and highlights American aid in the form of technology, investments, and security guarantees.

    – Our industrial strength, financial development, culture, and growth largely depend on the assistance from the US, he tells the newspaper.”

  9. “Donald Trump and Xi Jinping are standing in opposite corners, each waiting for the other to make the first move in the trade war. But the approach between the presidents is slow, reports Politico. Trump has said that a deal with China could be in place within a few weeks, but the political site sees it as unlikely. Two sources state that Trump is not allowing anyone from the White House to engage in discussions with China, no American negotiator is present, the White House has not contacted the Chinese embassy, and the Senate has not even appointed an ambassador to China.”

  10. “For Easter, in the Novopavlivskyi direction, Easter cakes were delivered to Ukrainian Defenders at the frontline by drones. 6,000 Easter cakes were blessed the day before in St. Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery in Kyiv.”

  11. The Democrats Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and Bill Clinton have explicitly not mentioned Donald Trump’s name, but according to The Washington Post, their message was clear: These are unusual times for American democracy with norms being disregarded.

For three former presidents to criticize and sound the alarm about the current leader of the White House within the span of two weeks is unusual, as there is a tradition of former presidents generally refraining from criticizing their successors.

  12. Russian forces attacked a humanitarian evacuation vehicle with FPV drones near Kostiantynivka in Donetsk region on the morning of April 20, violating their own declared “Easter truce.”

  13. Quiet in the comment section today, but it’s not surprising considering it’s a major holiday.

I’m about to head out myself for some Easter celebrations, so there won’t be any updates from me for a few hours.

Hope everyone has had a great Easter so far!

  14. I still don’t understand Trump’s motives for all of this and have a post in progress.

Unfortunately, it seems like Europe is not doing very well right now.

If Trump continues to sabotage Ukraine for much longer AND Europe doesn’t break free – then there is an urgent risk that this will end in the worst way for Europe actually.

At some point, no one knows when, Ukraine will take what they can get.

If Russia then decides to attack the Baltics/Svalbard + a lot of sabotage in the whole of Europe, it’s actually only good for Ukraine so they probably won’t hesitate if we couldn’t stand up after three years?

Zelensky is taking a tough stance against China right now – some are pondering that but suspect that UA is still trying to appease the USA.

And that means Europe hasn’t done what they must yet.

    1. No, if Europe had shown Zelenskyy that they mean business and that they can also take on the role of the USA, he wouldn’t need to sign any mineral agreement. His criticism of China may not be to appease the USA, but because he has realized that they have chosen a side by helping Russia with equipment and assisting them in extracting natural resources in the occupied areas.
Why butter them up when it won’t lead anywhere?
It’s better to show that they are on the wrong side in the hope of gaining sympathy and making Europe and the USA realize that they must help out.

🇨🇳💥 Chinese researchers have successfully detonated a hydrogen-based explosive device in a controlled field test, triggering devastating chemical chain reactions without using any nuclear materials,

The 2kg bomb generated a fireball exceeding 1,000 degrees Celsius for more than two seconds – 15 times longer than equivalent TNT blasts – without using any nuclear materials.

Shades of Dr. Zhivago: Ukrainian Drones Destroy Russian Armored Train Attack

In a further sign of Russia’s desperation, Kremlin commanders used an armored train operating close to the front line as part of an attempted assault on Ukrainian positions.

While they made a colorful impression during WWI and the Russian Civil War – as captured in the 1965 movie Dr. Zhivago – in the real world of 2025, the train’s inability to maneuver made it a sitting duck for Ukrainian FPV drones, which reportedly flew under the train’s armored locomotive and detonated, derailing and destroying it. Will Russia try machine gun-mounted chariots pulled by horses next?

    Interesting new Swedish company!

As reported by Jordan Linn on March 27, 2025, Nordic Air Defence, a Swedish startup, has developed the Kreuger 100, a lightweight, battery-powered drone interceptor intended for both military and civilian applications, contributing to scalable air defense capabilities within Europe. The system uses pulsed propulsion and controlled aerodynamics, replacing conventional onboard hardware with software to reduce production costs and enable large-scale deployment. Supported by a €1.2 million investment led by private investors, the company aims to address aerial threats such as the Russian Orlan-10 and Iranian-designed Shahed drones.
