The two diplomats-gate May 24, 2025

You’ll have to excuse me once again for digging a bit into our two scandals instead of Ukraine, even though I might have gotten a bit sour on ETC and Medin when I realized who became the scapegoat and that they are keeping quiet.

Anyway – the parliament has summoned SÄPO and the government to shed light on this, which is very good, I think they read my post and acted on it 🧐

https://www.aftonbladet.se/nyheter/a/QMzqgq/regeringen-och-sapo-kallas-till-riksdagen-kravs-pa-svar-om-medin

I now saw that Swedish Radio also received direct information that there were overlaps in the cases, so not only Blankspot has been directly contacted with information but there are two independent sources.

https://www.sverigesradio.se/artikel/sapotillslag-mot-diplomat-uppges-kopplat-till-joakim-medin

We actually received some interesting information from SVT – the report against the Ministry of Foreign Affairs official and Siyar Ali was filed as early as October 8, 2024.

“On October 8 last year, a report was filed with the Security Police regarding a Swedish diplomat and a representative of a Kurdish organization.

They are suspected of serious unauthorized dealing with classified information. ‘It concerns information that if disclosed could be detrimental to Sweden’s security,’ says chamber prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist.”

https://www.svt.se/nyheter/inrikes/aklagaren-om-pastadda-byteshandeln-kanns-som-en-sorts-paverkansoperation

An idea of how things have unfolded –

Turkey brightened up when they understood that the person they had arrested became politically hot in Sweden because the opposition made politics out of it, so they demanded a quid pro quo from the government to release Medin.

There is a certain risk that this will end up as a top-secret archive for 70 years in the end because it’s not a small mess the government has gotten itself into – SÄPO has imposed gag orders on all involved, and the newspapers seem to have taken a break from reporting, except for publications very far left, especially those close to the Kurds – the Rojava Committees are quite upset, for example.

There is, of course, a lot of communication in this matter – calls, messages, or emails. Turkey’s intelligence service has it all because they are the ones Sweden has been in contact with to get Medin released, and one must have verbally or in writing discussed what Turkey might accept to release Medin.

Now that everyone has denied the accusations, one can start leaking information that risks becoming a major political scandal in Sweden.

The opposition pushed with the help of the media as much as they could about the need to release Medin, pressuring the government to act, which was, of course, the intention of putting this pressure on them in the first place. It’s actually quite unusual for a prime minister and foreign minister to be mobilized in this way for a private individual in distress – ask the thousands of Tsunami survivors.

If our government had an ounce of morals and ethics, Shiyar Ali wouldn’t have been arrested in the first place – they have shown extremely poor judgment throughout the whole affair. Not to mention a Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs diplomat who is almost forgotten in the context because he is not named.

Both of them now have gag orders along with their lawyers, some newspapers have tried to interview Shiyar, but he refers to SÄPO and looks upset.

It’s quite audacious to silence everything by exploiting the legal system in this way.

Imagine being the person at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs who is now under SÄPO investigation – how would you feel when all your colleagues avoid you. Are we suddenly some damn procurement service for the Turkish intelligence service 😶

So, how is it going in Thyberg-gate, our other major scandal in a short time, or the first one rather?

Here we have a journalist who has seen the pictures, and he has the following to report –

-6 upper body pictures and one slightly more revealing picture, from the middle.

-the name of the email address was “a very high diplomat.”

(suggestions in speculation forums are that the name was Jan Knutsson).

https://www.svd.se/a/jQEqbL/svd-podden-politiken-pa-fest-med-thyberg

A tempest in a teapot regarding Thyberg and the pictures – the government panicked over absolutely nothing.

What greatly surprises me is that all editorial offices received this email, but none have leaked it yet.

There is also a gag order regarding this trial, but it presumably only applies to the accused and the defense, not the newspapers?

https://www.aftonbladet.se/nyheter/a/Xj180x/svensk-diplomat-dod-pekades-ut-som-misstankt-spion

Regarding the Thyberg-linked diplomat who passed away on May 16, I am of the opinion that a foreign power is not behind it, surprising as it may sound – because the investigation concerns espionage.

I believe SÄPO went for it because it was the incoming security adviser who was convicted, and they were completely caught off guard.

After quite a bit of searching (way too much), I managed to trace the source of the diplomat’s suicide – the man passed away on Thursday night, and on Saturday, Expressen knew it was suicide because they had received information.

https://www.expressen.se/nyheter/sverige/panik-och-hard-intern-kritik-efter-diplomatens-dod

Suicide is completely scrubbed from the reporting now, but another sentence is making the rounds in all media, actually coming on Friday when he was found dead a few hours earlier.

“According to the police, there are no suspicions of a crime related to the death.”

https://www.aftonbladet.se/nyheter/a/ny2wdJ/spionmisstankt-ud-diplomat-hittad-dod

If a person is suspected of espionage, that is, working for a foreign power, and shortly after being released is found dead, shouldn’t the first thing the police and security police do be to dismiss it as suicide or no suspicions of a crime?

Here are the guidelines that SÄPO and the police have chosen not to follow –

“Which deaths should the police investigate?

One guideline is that deaths caused by other than illness should be reported to the police. The police then decide on forensic autopsy, which is carried out by the National Board of Forensic Medicine. The forensic autopsy aims primarily to rule out crimes and determine the cause of death.”

A wild speculation theory that has been circulating is that the deceased had his spleen injured during the arrest, but that can probably be ruled out because he was in custody for three days and then died a day after being released.

The diplomat was arrested three days after the pictures were received at the government offices torpedoing Thyberg – the media has unanimously made a connection to the events, and it hasn’t changed from what I can gather.

The source is “in SÄPO’s investigation according to information,” which is sometimes interspersed with “police investigation.”

Another detail from the prosecutor is that he engaged in espionage between May 1-11, which are interesting dates since the pictures were received at the government offices on May 8.

May 11 might be too late because he was arrested that day so he couldn’t continue his violent criminal activities, but the question is what he did already on May 1 that they managed to uncover?

Was the protonmail address created on that date, or was the Grndr profile open and the pictures downloaded then?

https://www.svt.se/nyheter/inrikes/malmer-stenergard-en-oerhort-tung-dag

The name has already been published on alternative sites, so nothing to expose – the person also fits the description of where he worked as the media immediately pointed out in their articles – it wasn’t very difficult to put that puzzle together, and now even the population register is updated.

The account on Flashback that revealed the name of the deceased was registered in 2021 and hasn’t written anything except the name of the deceased diplomat in a post – a burner account.

Oisin knows the residential address, and that was enough information to figure it out.

https://www.aftonbladet.se/nyheter/kolumnister/a/bmvRe5/ar-det-har-bilden-av-sapos-fiasko

What Oisin is doing, and perhaps also what the Facebook account that blinked did, is leaving a trail of breadcrumbs for the diggers to throw themselves over and unravel so that the media can refer to information from others when they want to proceed with information they already know.

Description of the arrest –

“The police officers who enter his home and arrest him have not identified themselves as police officers, not even spoken Swedish. At first, he thinks that someone is breaking the door to rob him,” says Anton Strand, the man’s lawyer.”

The police officers shout in English until he is sitting arrested in the car according to the lawyer.

The raid takes place in the middle of the night, and the door is smashed in with the frame and all.

The diplomat shares an address with a man from Asia in the population register, but he is actually separated from the person in question – they do not live together, and as far as public records are concerned, the deceased was single.

https://www.svt.se/nyheter/inrikes/anhallande-havt-i-arende-om-spioneri

If it had been the diplomat’s name in the email, wouldn’t SÄPO have acted earlier than after three days?

Three days before the arrest feels like about the time it takes to do forensics, but Protonmail is supposed to be impossible to hack?

https://www.svt.se/nyheter/inrikes/sapo-utreder-om-frammande-makt-ligger-bakom-tobias-thybergs-avgang

If you google around, Protonmail has previously disclosed data, and in this case, it is being investigated as a threat to national security/espionage, so a quite serious crime.

At the arrest, SÄPO presumably confiscated the phone and computer.

According to SVT, the email address was terminated before May 12, and one measure would be to close the account as soon as the images are sent?

If Protonmail did not provide them with the information, how did they then find the deceased diplomat?

One possibility could be that Thyberg had just closed the Grndr account and not “several years ago” as he claimed – and that SÄPO managed to go that route to see who downloaded the images?

The man is arrested for espionage but was downgraded to reasonably suspected and released after three days, with computers and phones seized, then he dies.

https://www.svt.se/nyheter/inrikes/uppgifter-svensk-diplomat-dod-misstanktes-for-spioneri

“The news of the diplomat being found dead came on Friday morning. This just days after the same diplomat had been detained from the weekend until Wednesday. However, the diplomat is still suspected and under investigation.”

Then two conflicting pieces of information –

-The diplomat was temporarily in Sweden – “the diplomat was in his 50s and had been employed at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs for a large part of his professional life. When he was arrested in his home in central Stockholm, he was temporarily back in Sweden from a rotational assignment in the country where he is stationed.”

https://www.aftonbladet.se/nyheter/a/zA27l5/larmet-inifran-ud-efter-toppdiplomatens-dod-varsta-krisen

-another rumor circulating is that he was between assignments and serving his time at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, it’s a rumor at best.

What indicates that the police do not believe he is an international master spy?

He is arrested, released immediately, and when he dies, the police are quick to say that there is no evidence of a crime.

If they had found his WhatsApp to GRU, he would not have been released – that “45-year-old spy” who was arrested a while ago was remanded, presumably after 14 days.

  1. Interesting Johan!
    Well done Johan 💪
Want to add some more fuel to the fire!
“In 2019, CFIUS raised national security concerns regarding Grindr’s ownership, particularly about the potential misuse of sensitive user data by the Chinese government.”

Of course, all content on Grindr is likely stored on servers in China and can be spread to spies, for example…

After that, it was sold to the West, but probably in a way that China can control! Of course, aggressive dictatorships provide free services so they can collect data! Smart assholes….

  2. It was indeed a break in Pokrovsk with adjacent sectors Toretsk in the north and Novopavlivka in the south. For now, the Russians have fired there. Let’s see if there will be any loss report, but the losses in Pokrovsk suggest that it was in these sectors that armor was lost as well as a significant part of KWIA.
Then a record level in Kursk.

Together, these two contribute to us being at more than clearly offensive levels in terms of the number of attacks. It has been mentioned here on the blog that the Russians are supposed to launch an offensive this summer.

  3. Thank you Johan!

    Interesting. Not least the timeline.

Had a bit of difficulty keeping up completely though. Maybe it would be easier to follow if people were named A or B or similar if the name shouldn’t be mentioned.

And one does get a bit confused about the detail at the arrest if the detained person is released after three days. The apartment apparently in Stockholm. Didn’t they ring the doorbell before breaking in? Where would the man go? Or did they guard against the suspect being ready with an AK4 in the hallway if he had time to gather himself? (How quickly do you break down the door? Depends of course.) Perhaps not entirely surprising if there was a commotion that could potentially lead to serious harm.

Maybe one is not allowed to say that, but one can’t help but wonder what was so important about Medin’s trip that he took the obvious risk? What could he reveal to Swedish readers by being on the spot? After all, there can’t be many Swedes who don’t assume that the accusations against İmamoğlu are false. And it still seems that there are (domestic) journalists in Turkey.

So what was Medin after? Adding to the self-image as a knight of justice in shining armor. Heroic glory in certain circles here in Sweden. Maybe. But others have then had to pay the price. Not so morally appealing.

  4. About breadcrumbs and Protonmail: it has been mentioned that it was a burner account. It would be a service error by the GRU not to have a set of burner accounts related to individuals with influence on Sweden’s security? Just as in staff recruitment (there should be personnel files, but let it be) collecting kompromat/compromising material, one must have also prepared how this will be communicated? And in this case, they were extra creative and tried to kill two birds with one stone, of which one died.

    1. Yes, that’s about right! 😂
Went to a concert with Ghost in the neighboring village yesterday.
They had a complete ban on taking photos and videos, you had to put your phone in a small bag with a lock when entering the arena.
Therefore, I missed out on the Friday hangover here yesterday.
Then it was impossible to get home for several hours after the concert, and while waiting there wasn’t much else to do than consume alcoholic beverages.
The concrete cap that resulted from that is exceptionally heavy to carry today! 😂

  5. Westley Richard

My current theory is that the diplomat JB is the one who sent the emails to the government and media from an account that he has given the same name as his former boss and cabinet secretary when JB returned from his post as ambassador. JB has worked as an ambassador in North Korea and Malaysia and surely hoped for a new exciting assignment in a country with a higher status.

JB was one of the diplomats who went to the media and argued that they could not perform their duties if the SD party gained influence in the government. He was no longer loyal to his office and believed that his political views stood above it. A new ambassadorial position for him under the current government was out of the question, which the cabinet secretary surely explained to him before moving on as NATO coordinator.

JB got some crappy job and carried folders at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, which of course has contributed to his mental well-being. Every day that passed, he sank deeper into darkness, which also affected his relationship with his partner.

While JB sank into darkness, a new star was rising, Thyberg. JB surely knew Thyberg quite well, they had both been ambassadors at the same time and socialized in gay circles. We can suspect that jealousy started to arise from JB’s side. People have difficulty accepting their own failures and often project anger towards someone else who succeeds.

It was probably noticeable at work that JB was unbalanced.

During security clearance checks for the hiring of a new security adviser, various forms of background checks are included, involving people at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. It is not unlikely that JB has been involved or that he heard gossip that Thyberg was a candidate.

When the appointment failed, the deeply depressed and unbalanced JB decided that now he would get back at all his perceived wrongs and started an account in the name of the former boss he hates to sabotage the government he hates, using a colleague he believes does not deserve the recognition as a tool. We do not know what is in the email, is there any threat to hand over the images to a foreign power if the appointment is not canceled? There may also be other phrases that raise suspicion of espionage by the Security Service.

Was it difficult to find JB and suspect him? Probably not, it was a limited group to search among. It has surely been possible to see who has downloaded Thyberg’s images, who has uploaded them to Protonmail at the time the government received the email, who has shown unbalanced behavior, who has a crashed relationship, etc. As soon as you have two puzzle pieces that fit together, it’s just a matter of building further and bringing in the person when you have enough matching puzzle pieces.

JB has been feeling bad lately, poor career opportunities, a crashed relationship, and then he is arrested on suspicion of espionage. Going behind your employer’s back and exposing a colleague is rarely seen with kind eyes by anyone in a workplace. Exposing someone for being gay probably doesn’t make you welcome in gay circles anymore.

Add a bit of pre-existing mental health issues and it’s not surprising that he chose to end his life. He was taken directly from custody to a psychiatric facility but chose to leave from there.

But what about the Russians, then, it becomes more speculative if they are involved. Further investigation will show, a full autopsy will follow, and everything he has done will be followed up. It will probably turn out in the end that it is about a deeply unbalanced person who spiraled out of control.

    1. It was probably something like that happened to Wesley 👍
Possibly a slightly larger group than just the deceased but it stays within Sweden.

In the second case, the prosecutor and Medin himself have stated that it sounds like an influence operation that there would be a connection between the Kurd and Medin 🧐

      1. Westley Richard

There is certainly a connection between the release of Medin and the Kurds who were arrested, but not as the left-wing media claims.
It is far from certain that the government has engaged in a trade-off with Turkey. Police and prosecutors act independently in Sweden and ministers are not allowed to pressure them into committing crimes by arresting someone innocent. Prosecutors have a duty to act if they believe a crime has been committed regardless of where the information comes from, even if it ultimately comes from Turkey.
That Turkey releases Medin when a Swedish prosecutor has arrested some individuals disliked by the Turkish regime is not strange, that’s how their legal system works.
It would have been worse if the prosecutor had not acted according to Swedish law due to political activism.
        ……………
The Ministry for Foreign Affairs seems to be quite rotten with a lot of activism and groupings, but I don’t believe that the email itself was part of any larger conspiracy at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, it was simply a guy who had a bad day at work.

    2. Lammis watching ruzzian empire go BOOM

Sounds like a very likely explanation. He probably didn’t have a typical diplomatic career either, came in a bit “from the outside”, so he was probably already seen as a bit of an odd bird at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

  6. “A global police operation has taken down the core of a cyber attack network controlled by Russian criminals, writes The Guardian. Police from several countries in both North America and Europe participated in the operation and international arrest warrants have been issued by European investigators against 20 suspects. Most are believed to be in Russia.”
    https://omni.se/a/wg22p4

In this context, it can also be mentioned that Russians have found their way here since about a week ago.
Through the contact form, a couple of obscure emails written in Russian with equally obscure links to Russian sites arrive every day.
Designed as advertisements for various services.

      1. Lammis watching ruzzian empire go BOOM

Some Russian banks apparently still have SWIFT access for transactions related to payment for oil and gas, as well as the import of food.
By the way, I found this summary (in Swedish) of the sanctions against Russia, which I thought was good; I’m posting it here in case someone else might find it useful: https://www.kommerskollegium.se/importera–exportera/handla-utanfor-eu/undantag-fran-exportforbud/internationella-sanktioner/sanktioner-mot-ryssland/

    1. Westley Richard

I saw it yesterday and reacted to Puck’s suggestion that Putin made many decisions ad hoc. My perception has rather been that he has been able to think and act long-term as he doesn’t need to care about domestic media or voters. Thinking long-term doesn’t necessarily mean thinking correctly.

      1. Interesting, because that’s exactly what I reacted to as well. It might apply to short-term, less extensive decisions, but like you, I believe that he has probably planned the major aspects for a long time. Then maybe the current situation determines when he takes certain steps in his plan.

  7. USA believes that RU can continue to wage war like this for another two years.

Tomorrow it will be about the Sicilian mafia, but on Monday or Tuesday it will be related to UA again – a good post in the making.

Quite a big drop now, almost starting to look at jobs in another currency.

Nine out of ten siblings in the family died, writes the BBC, referring to the Nasser hospital where the children’s mother works as a doctor. She was working when the attack occurred. The BBC has verified video clips shared by the Hamas-controlled Palestinian health department showing small burnt bodies being lifted from the rubble after the bomb.

  11. Donald Trump’s economic advisers have expressed a growing frustration with what is perceived as a sluggish and divided EU. Sources told the Wall Street Journal this after the president threatened with 50 percent tariffs on Friday.
