  1. “A third military target on the Russian railway network operated by the Russian army was attacked last night, this time in Russian-occupied Ukraine. The Ukrainian GUR reports that on the night of May 31, a train en route from Melitopol to Crimea was attacked near the town of Yakymivka.”

  2. The high attack rate continues with slightly decreasing intensity, but up again in Pokrovsk which has fallen in a few days.

Rising KWIA/attacks, now over seven, results in a loss ratio of 60% for a 12-man group. Could the Russians have approached better fortifications?

  4. Looking at the data (at least from April 18 this year), it doesn’t seem like there’s any sharp change anywhere, neither in losses nor in the number of attacks (not even in any specific attack sector). It looks pretty stable compared to about 1.5 months ago.

Can’t we conclude that we still don’t see any signs of a summer offensive?

During a summer offensive, we should see a sharp increase in numbers from today, in losses and the number of attacks across all or parts of the front…

  5. The U.S. Reinforces Europe’s Northern Front, Fearing War With Russia

In quest to make NATO more lethal, the Pentagon turns to the high north and the Baltics

The dummy munitions splashed into the Baltic Sea, yet they sent a message to Russia: Even as President Trump has thrown NATO into a historic crisis by questioning its efficacy, in Northern Europe, the U.S. military is doubling down.

  6. DN May 10, 2025

    – I’m not throwing anyone under the bus, but there are reasons to be self-critical. If it turns out that we were wrong, those of us who have considered ourselves better at assessing Russia and the Russian threats than most other countries, shouldn’t sweep it under the rug. Then one should be self-critical. That is also one of the purposes behind Carl Bildt’s investigation, says Ulf Kristersson.

Do you see any danger in reorganizing in this security policy situation?

    – I won’t preempt Carl’s investigation, but in general terms, one can say that right now Russia is incredibly preoccupied with Ukraine. That is dangerous in itself. But I am more concerned about what could happen with Russia in a few years, when they have been able to regroup, arm themselves even more, and become dangerous for more European countries.

He says that Sweden has a window until about 2030 to be able to arm itself.

    https://www.dn.se/sverige/ulf-kristersson-nu-finns-ett-fonster-for-att-gora-om-underrattelsetjansten/

    2030, that’s five years.

    1. Westley Richard

The security service advocated for disarmament until the Russian attack in 2022, it is serious. If it was the other way around and they reported an increased Russian threat while politicians ignored this and focused solely on the climate threat, it is even more serious. Considering that politicians often adjust their statements while the security service remains silent, the security service or the then government will have to bear the blame.

Perhaps the investigation is not being initiated because the security service is in need of reorganization, but to justify the presence of a security advisor in the government appointed by Kristersson. It might have been better for the country if he resigned and the parliament chose a new prime minister.

Sweden needs a decisive prime minister who can take action and challenge Maggan in the next election.

  7. Russia steps up offensives in Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, Sumy oblasts, Syrskyi says. While Russia’s main efforts remain concentrated on the Pokrovsk, Toretsk, and Lyman fronts in Donetsk Oblast, as well as in Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy Oblast bordering Russia, Zaporizhzhia has seen an uptick in escalation, Syrskyi noted.

According to Syrskyi, Ukraine’s Armed Forces are inflicting substantial losses on Russian troops, claiming over 34,000 Russian personnel were killed in May alone. Ukrainian artillery, aviation, and drone systems have been targeting enemy units “even before they reach our positions,” he said.

As 50,000 Russian troops amass, Ukraine’s Sumy Oblast braces for potential large-scale offensive

Reports of an imminent Russian summer offensive and troop build ups on Ukraine’s border are raising alarms in Sumy Oblast and fears that a large-scale assault could be on the horizon.

Activity in Kursk is partly border manifestations.

We see increased activity there since just over a week ago.

  9. European leaders shift focus to defending Ukraine without US support, the Telegraph reports. According to the Telegraph, senior European diplomats meeting in The Hague agreed to shift their focus from deploying troops to enforce a ceasefire to preparing long-term strategies for supporting Ukraine without American backing.

Previously, the United Kingdom and France led  efforts to form a so-called “coalition of the willing,” a deterrence force that would be deployed in the event of a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. Leaders of 31 nations met in Paris on March 27 at a summit for the coalition.

While over 30 countries have expressed interest in the coalition, only a few have publicly committed to deploying troops.

It now appears that the coalition of the willing has entirely or partially depended on whether the US is behind it or not. Not much “willingness” there.

Otherwise, the article does not specify what the alternative will be other than now seeing the risk of lack of American support. At least not as far as I can tell.

  10. Taurus

These missiles represent not only a powerful symbolic gesture, demonstrating that the West is truly committed to Ukraine’s defense, but also an immediate and tangible impact on the battlefield.

As recently highlighted by the Kyiv Independent, the Taurus missile can be programmed to detonate only after penetrating multiple layers of protection, making it especially effective against strategic targets like the Crimean Bridge

Western hesitation continues to undermine Ukraine

On May 28, President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Germany and met with the country’s new Chancellor, Friedrich Merz. There were high expectations that Berlin would finally authorize the delivery of Taurus long-range missiles — a long-standing request from Kyiv since the beginning of the Russian invasion.

    1. Yes! Sounds almost too good to be true. 👍💥✈️👍💥✈️👍💥✈️👍😀

The A-50 is probably starting to become endangered by now.

    1. So unfortunate that the tires on the wings don’t help.

Is this for real and if 40 planes have been used up, it’s almost champagne time, especially in combination with the Crimean railway. Sunday hangover?

    1. I hope the truck driver and the operators managed to find safe shelter. They are likely to be in hot water if this is true. SLAVA UKRAINA!!!

  11. Do you think RU will remain completely silent?

That’s usually what they do with things that sting.

They can’t afford to lose these flights.

    1. The only upside to acknowledging the relationship would be to be able to accuse Ukraine of not wanting peace, they are really mean to us peaceful Russians.

  12. At the beginning of the war, everyone wrote that we who supported it couldn’t make a difference when we sat and donated to the drone weapon.

Now, the drone weapon has taken out a part of the strategic bomber fleet with these drones.

    They were so wrong.

      1. So insignificant FIM and Johan No.1 + a damn lot of other nobodys have contributed to the fact that the Russians do not have any strategic nuclear bomber aircraft.

D2U and other completely private initiatives have achieved more than what large countries and leaders have managed to accomplish.

    1. Lammis watching ruzzian empire go BOOM

I thought it was so uplifting to read about the train accidents earlier today, but they seem like cat p–p now! 😃

    1. Incredibly nice to hear. Hopefully a gamechanger. It is the constant bombings that UA has suffered the most from. To see one’s country being shot to pieces.

  13. If Ukraine goes after more than just the strategic bomber – for example, the Iskander platforms or silos, then it’s a new era.

The first stop is to see what Trump, Merz, Macron, Starmer, and Putin say. The question is whether this was what Merz had in mind 😀

Because if Ukraine can dismantle Russia’s nuclear capability over time, then they can remove Putin’s trump card.

Earlier in the war, RU’s nuclear capability was an absolute no-go.

  14. A guess is that Ukraine has not told anyone outside and that everyone is equally taken by surprise as Putin.

The fact that they are maximizing publicity one day before the peace negotiations is also exciting.

  15. Very good and brief chronicle regarding the world situation.

    The essence:

“Firstly, Russia’s economy must be driven to the ground so that the country can no longer afford to continue the war of aggression. Secondly, Ukraine must be provided with sufficient resources in the form of weapons and ammunition so that the country turns the situation on the battlefield into a victory. Considering Western Europe’s superiority in terms of population, economy, and technology (even without involvement from the USA), it is difficult to understand why this has not already happened.”

Or right? What did they inform about – “we’re just going to rent some trucks in Russia, no biggie”.

  16. Borta bra men hemma bäst.

Back home after attending a wedding up in Umeå and spending most of the day in the car. Was in the car on the way up last Friday when the power outage occurred and one of the servers refused to start up afterwards. Managed to get help remotely to fix it, so just had to drive all the way back home. Thanks Anna!

Nice to see that you are holding the fort and that more pleasant things have happened during the day. 40 planes sounds absolutely incredible and well done by Ukraine!

    1. Same here, in the car most of the day until 6 pm, maybe I met you on E4, I was heading north past Umeå.

A lot happened when you were offline… as surprising as Matthias Rust’s landing on Red Square in 1987 👌

    1. Tougher than tough, I sympathize with you.
Sending virtual hugs and strength from me.. you will get through this even though it feels gloomy 😎

  17. Yesterday’s article by Johan No 1 was the masquerade of the decade. Ukraine betrayed by everyone and bleeding out. And then a solid knee in the Russian groin. And by that, I don’t mean some drunken knee at an outdoor bar between two testosterone-filled over-inebriated 20-year-olds. I’m talking about a muay thai-trained knee, hardened since childhood, in its absolute prime, straight into the fat vodka-marinated 60-year-old Muscovite Russian’s groin on a Thai beach, so hard that a seismographic recording is made and the Russian doesn’t need to undergo a medical transition because the package has already been inverted completely for free.

  18. Alrajt, I can’t access the admin page so you’ll have to go to Substack for Monday’s post and then IT can post it here when I’m up around lunchtime your time 😀

    “400 bad request”.
