The war in Ukraine 2025-06-11

Russian losses in Ukraine:

  • 1120 KWIA
  • 8 Tanks
  • 15 AFVs
  • 34 Artillery systems
  • 1 MLRS
  • 240 UAVs
  • 7 Cruise missiles
  • 124 Vehicles & Fuel tanks
  • 2 Special equipment

KWIA is now at 999,200 which means we will most likely reach 1 million by the end of the day.
These are completely absurd numbers and show that Putin does not care about the Russian people, but also that the Russian people apparently have no problem sacrificing themselves for his imperialistic dreams.

Many are planning to celebrate once the losses exceed one million.
For my part, it will probably be a Nemiroff tomorrow. Not so much to celebrate a million killed and injured Russian soldiers, but more to honor Ukraine’s courage and immense resilience.

Are you planning to celebrate, and if so, how?

  1. AFU “In total, 220 combat clashes were recorded for yesterday.
The enemy launched four missile and 90 aviation strikes at the positions of Ukrainian units and settlements, using 11 missiles and dropping 141 controlled bombs. In addition, he carried out over 5279 shells, 105 of which were from jet fire systems, and deployed 3158 kamikaze drones to impress.”
          1. It’s not entirely obvious humor.

Saying no in Russian becomes contradictory.

First comes the statement something like “We must arm ourselves or else we will be forced to speak Russian”.
If he answers no and means that it doesn’t lead to being forced to learn Russian but says no in Russian, he has already “been forced” to learn Russian and proves that the first statement is true, thus contradicting himself.

At the same time, it can also be interpreted as him saying no to the rearmament itself, but by doing it in Russian, he shows that a no will lead to us having to learn Russian.

So, my interpretation is that when he answers no but does it in Russian, it becomes a kind of paradox, a “proof” that a no actually means a yes.

            1. I might have understood if it had been texted as “njet”. But the name of the owner of the bsky account sounds Russian, so maybe it was natural.

Together with the German defense company Helsing, Saab has conducted the first three flights with Helsing’s AI agent Centaur in the Gripen E fighter jet. Saab states in a press release that the flights are a “major step forward” for the introduction of AI in combat aircraft. During the flights, control was handed over to the agent Centaur. The AI performed complex maneuvers and instructed the pilot when it was time to fire in a simulated combat with another Gripen plane, piloted by a pilot.

    Experts contradict each other.

“Ove Bring, professor emeritus of international law, does not share the view that Israel violated international law when the country’s forces boarded the activist ship Madleen on its way to Gaza. He tells Expressen that the laws of naval warfare apply, not the peacetime regulations of the Law of the Sea Convention.

He says that Israel has utilized a blockade right dating back to provisions from the Paris Peace Treaty of 1856, which means that ships can be stopped even in international waters as a way to monitor the blockade.”

    1. Interesting how these “law benders” bring up whatever suits them in today’s world.
Are there no expiration dates on old laws?

These rights must now be interpreted in the light of the UN Charter (especially Chapter VII), modern humanitarian law (e.g. the Geneva Conventions), and international court practices.

Ove Bring’s statement has some legal grounding in older law, but becomes questionable in a contemporary context where human rights, proportionality, and protection of civilians are central. When experts choose to highlight old law unilaterally, without relating to modern legal practices, one should be vigilant, it could be a way to “bend the law” to legitimize questionable actions.

We can see how #fcktrmp constantly tries to bend its way forward….

      1. Well, snooped around a bit to see what I can find. Ends as usual with it becoming a matter of interpretation.
Then it also seems not to matter if one concludes that Israel has done wrong.
The USA and others completely disregard it and the UN, etc. can do nothing but complain.
It just becomes world politics and toothless and a few isolated sanctions.

Russia has of course been quite severely affected by sanctions, etc. and if they hadn’t committed so many war crimes maybe they wouldn’t have been as extensive. But it’s not enough to stop them from continuing.

It’s laws and international agreements, not milk, that it’s about. The whole society is built on laws regardless of when they were enacted and not on loosely held opinions from parties.

        1. Even laws are interpreted somewhat differently. Then it’s not always about laws but about agreements and arrangements, etc. where you can choose whether to sign them, and when it feels uncomfortable, you break it.

Sometimes you wish we had some body that could ensure that international law could be established and then ensure that they are also upheld. NOTE! Not referring to Israel vs. Greta in this case.

    2. The expert who argues that Israel must recognize Palestine as a state is probably wrong. It seems that it is sufficient for there to be an armed conflict to impose a blockade; there is no need to declare war against anyone or similar, and it can even apply in the case of civil war. In this case, it is HAMAS that Israel claims to be at war with, and even non-state organizations seem to be allowed to establish a blockade against.

However, it is not clear-cut that Israel is in the right when they stop ships with supplies for the civilian population when there is famine in the area.

      Brief summary:

      1. Laws of Naval Warfare (San Remo Manual, 1994)

The San Remo Manual on International Law Applicable to Armed Conflicts at Sea is a guiding, but not binding, codification of applicable international law.

According to the San Remo Manual:

      • Article 93: A blockade is legal if it is declared, notified, effective, and does not cause starvation among the civilian population.
      • Articles 67-98: A blockade may be maintained even on the high seas if the purpose is to prevent the supply of weapons or military equipment to an enemy.
      • Article 102: Civilian vessels attempting to breach the blockade may be boarded even on the high seas, but only after warning and using proportionate force.

      2. UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)

      • Civilian vessels have the right to free navigation on the high seas (Article 87).
      • But this right is limited in times of armed conflict, when the laws of naval warfare take precedence.

      Israel argues:

      • Hamas controls Gaza’s territory and logistics.
      • Therefore, humanitarian aid can be redirected to Hamas, or free up resources for Hamas.
      • Thus, even civilian aid indirectly aids the enemy.

      Critics like the UN claim:

      • Such reasoning implies that all civilians are considered legitimate targets – which violates the Geneva Conventions.
      • Food and medicine for civilians are protected under international humanitarian law, regardless of Hamas controlling the area.
      • Stopping such aid when there is famine constitutes the blockade as illegal collective punishment.

The laws of naval warfare do not consider who initiated the conflict or who is right or wrong.

If we compare this with the war in Ukraine and one takes Israel’s side on the issue, it would mean that one must also give Russia the right to, in turn, stop (and after warnings, attempt to board, etc., even sink) all incoming and outgoing civilian ship traffic from Ukraine regardless of the cargo. This could potentially benefit the enemy.

      1. Looked more like a little nacho chip.

I’m making an effort and posting the Emoji in all its glory so there are no doubts.

I wonder if this is at risk of derailing?

“No Kings” is organizing demonstrations against Donald Trump and his policies on the president’s birthday on June 14. This is reported by Newsweek.

On their website, it says “there are no kings in the USA.” The organization has arranged several protests across the country, in all states. On the same day, Donald Trump plans a huge military parade to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the American army.”

  5. It was hardly unexpected, otherwise Russia wouldn’t have bothered to carry out a prisoner exchange, would they? They probably don’t want them to go home and talk about how well they’ve had it as prisoners in Ukraine.

“Russian prisoners of war who were part of the exchange with Ukraine are waiting to be sent back to the front. This is reported by organizations that help Russians avoid military service to Nova Gazeta.

In May, Ukraine and Russia conducted their largest exchange so far when 1,000 soldiers were handed over from each side. Now the organization Get Lost is sounding the alarm that the soldiers are returning to the front, something that goes against international law, writes Nova Gazeta.”

  6. Now that everyone wants to talk about Greta, it’s probably good to keep the Ukraine war on the surface so it doesn’t completely fade away.

Trump will probably get what he wants and be completely occupied domestically pretty soon, and then US support will be gone.

Which may not be a loss that Trump cares about?

But Merz seems to have shouldered the mantle and the monocle well so far – surely you saw when he managed the handshake with Trump and resisted the pressure of humiliation?

Anyway, I’m completely satisfied with Merz so far, does anyone have a different opinion?

Macron and Starmer keep their distance as if it’s contagious almost, but as long as Merz keeps pushing on very Germanly, it should work out.

    1. Nice to see you! Is it raining on you today despite the vacation so you have some time to visit the blog?

Yes, there’s a bit much Greta now, the post below will probably be my last. I got a bit curious about what applies to blockades and it seems like you can do as you please.

Merz is behaving, it’s those Taurus that one is waiting for, right?

We probably have to give up hope for Trump, but today marks two weeks since he gave Putin just two weeks, so maybe we’ll see something later today when he wakes up.

      1. Jo lite blött 😀

Mostly in the media I thought – editorials are probably being written now that it’s over.

Imagine if Ukraine could get this attention.

The military parade is probably like a red rag to the Palestinian movement, but that’s probably the intention as well.

        1. There will probably be some temporary warmth coming this weekend, so it will run out again by midsummer. 😄

Yes, I agree, I don’t really understand why there is such a fuss but it’s probably because it’s so polarized, both when it comes to Israel/Palestine and Greta.

It’s an understatement to suggest that only the Palestinian movement is upset that Trump is celebrating his birthday with a military parade. It’s probably more that they take the opportunity to stir up trouble and cause chaos.

Ebba, it’s just as horrific if not worse when you now try to exploit the situation and gain cheap political points among all the Greta-haters when you accuse her of doing it for her own gain.

Now, the text below is partly taken out of context because in the interview it is also mentioned later that Greta equated the kidnapping of herself and the others from the ship with HAMAS kidnappings, and there Greta is of course off track. Ebba also thought that was horrific and maybe it’s not the choice of words I would have used but I agree with her on the substance.

“Christian Democratic leader Ebba Busch is strongly critical of Greta Thunberg and the other activists on the Madleen ship.

    – She has not been involved in shedding light on the situation in Gaza. She has made it about herself, says Busch to TT and continues:

    – It’s horrific.”

    1. Westley Richard

Now you are out and about. Shouldn’t she be allowed to express herself? Is it only the racist right-wing that is allowed to speak?

Are you sure that a journalist didn’t stick a microphone in her face and ask what she thought of Greta.

What should she have done? Run away?

      1. Please read again, I haven’t written anything about her not being allowed to speak.

If I were against her speaking, it would have been quite strange if I quoted her at the same time, wouldn’t it?

I criticized what Ebba actually said in the first part of the short statement.
However, in the second part, I actually agreed with her.

If this had been a forum for Greta and Palestine lovers, I would have understood if you criticized me in exactly the same way as I criticized Ebba, that I am trying to cater to the audience, but now it’s probably the opposite, so I guess I’m mostly unpopular…

I think I will reserve the right to write what I think when our politicians speak,
and you are fully entitled to think that I am way off base!

    2. They dumped their phones in the sea before boarding Israel. Very environmentally friendly!
      https://youtu.be/f-mQ-BBULaY?si=tbDBmE9nLGwjCDVi

Then they flew back to Sweden. Couldn’t she set a good example and say that she wanted to take the train?

Greta doesn’t care about either the environment or Gaza, she is only interested in being heard and seen for her own benefit. She is no longer an innocent child, she is a young cynical activist who seeks attention. Almost as if one suspects that it is financed by some shady business.
      Follow the money!

  8. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson comments on the cyber attacks against, among others, SVT.
    – Sweden is under attack in the sense that enormously extensive cyber attacks are constantly ongoing, he says according to SR Ekot.
He does not point out any particular country as responsible, but says that Säpo sees that Russia, Iran, and China systematically engage in this type of activity.”

    1. Peter Den Större

Sweden and large parts of Europe are of course already under Russian attack, our leaders would facilitate the Ukrainian victory if they dared to communicate the truth with us. If nothing else, it would help us avoid experiencing this again in five years. The muddy drunken bear must be shot.

    2. It will probably take a “Pearl Harbor” moment, something military that requires lives and materiel before we throw in the towel, and once it’s done, there’s no turning back until the Russians are neutralized. It will be a test for the entire democratic world.

  9. “Ukraine will receive nearly £1.7 billion in additional defense funding from the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Shmyhal announced. The funds will be used to procure more weapons, including Rapid Ranger air defense systems and Martlet light missiles.”

  10. “A loud explosion was reported in Engels, Russia. A large plume of smoke was seen rising in the area. Per ASTRA, the blast may have occurred at the 9th Central Automobile Repair Plant, located 2 km from the Kristall oil depot — or possibly at the RusKon-S pipeline valve plant nearby.”

  11. Without knowing the details, it actually sounds like a win for Trump.

“An agreement with China is in place, Donald Trump writes on Truth Social. The only thing left now is for him and Xi Jinping to approve it. China will deliver magnets and necessary rare earth metals in advance. In return, we will give China what we have agreed on,” it says. In total, tariffs on China amount to 55 percent, while tariffs on the USA are at 10 percent, writes Trump, stating that the relationship between the countries is “excellent.”

      1. Sweden may have to start exploiting our resources. Regardless of what the Environmental Code says and the consequences for those most directly affected.

Of course, I wouldn’t be among those most directly affected. (As far as I know.)

    1. Lammis watching ruzzian empire go BOOM

I understand nothing – Americans are supposed to pay 55% tax on Chinese goods but the Chinese only 10% on American goods?

      Strange way to finance BBB…

I believe that their reluctance to comment is most likely due to the fact that the film supports Alice’s version. Pretty sure they wouldn’t have been able to keep quiet otherwise.

“The Left Party has seen the film showing the altercation in the EU Parliament between one of the party’s officials and KD’s EU politician Alice Teodorescu Måwe, sources tell Dagens Nyheter. However, the party does not want to comment on what the film shows, but writes in a text message to the newspaper that they are awaiting “legal documentation”.”

    1. I really hope that the Swedish media does not let V sweep this under the rug. This violent Hamas-embracing anti-Semitic party should not get away with it!

      1. I hardly think they will release it otherwise we will have to remind them?

Then one cannot judge an entire party based on individual actions if we stick to just this incident, or is it okay?

I hardly think the majority are HAMAS sympathizers and antisemites either even though they are the ones most noticed in the media. However, most are probably in favor of a Palestinian independent state and against the war, but that doesn’t mean you have to be antisemitic or a HAMAS supporter.

        1. SD is usually collectively judged, so why not.

There has been too much within V that has been in the spotlight lately for it to be isolated incidents among a few. There is a dismissive view of their own glorification of violence and antisemitism.
