      1. Even if the article may exaggerate the problems with drones and how effective they feel, it seems like it describes the issues quite well. But as you write, it of course depends a lot on skills and experience.

I saw that the article author has been questioned, among others, by JvM:
“He served in 1 drone unit, on 1 front position for 6 months. How could he judge the over all effectivnes of fpvs? Maby 1 of the team was a bad pilot, or the officers leading the battalion was bad. I have spoken to many drone teams in many different units and they do not agree with this article.”

Myself, I have only done simulator flights (with a real controller) and it takes a number of hours before you can even start doing more advanced maneuvers. In reality, with winds, disturbances, signal delays, etc., it must be significantly more difficult.

I don’t think there is any point in “talking down” someone’s experience or experiences. It’s not a competition about who is the toughest on the schoolyard. Everyone helps out in beating the Russians black and blue.

In my opinion, the article highlights two important things. Survival bias (and perhaps propaganda?), and then the need for competence. With the right education and skills, you can maximize the utility of a tool. Competence is needed both operationally, tactically, and strategically.

          1. Agree, it’s probably not the case that the article author Jakub seems to be pro-Russian.

Maybe one can interpret it that way just because he points out that Ukraine is ineffective with their drones, but if there are problems, they should be addressed.

However, I get the feeling that Jakub doesn’t really think that FPV drones are particularly good overall (e.g. difficult to handle) and that one should instead invest in more advanced military solutions. That it’s not just a question of competence but that they simply aren’t good enough.

Maybe that’s what makes JvM critical?

If Jakub had been in Ukraine in 2022/23, his article might have been dismissed, because a lot has happened since then, but he has been on site both in 2024 and 2025 so his experiences are probably relevant.

It cannot be ignored that drones are easy to develop and that there is an extremely rapid development, one can basically come up with a prototype or upgrade that can be tested within a few hours. The author praises artillery where the development is much slower and significantly more costly.

NATO should support Western drone development and ensure that there is the possibility to quickly start mass-producing drones and that critical components are available.

Perhaps one should also start with targeted support for associations involved in drone flying. Like music school and swimming school.

    2. Many peculiarities in that article.

“First-person view drones cannot really hover, fly slowly, or linger above a target.”
Eh, what?? Sounds more like an incompetent operator. Or maybe they’ve been delivered really lousy drones.

“First-person view drones use unencrypted analog radio signal.” Digital transmitters have been around for a while, it all depends on how the drone has been built and not a reason not to invest in drones.

There have also been fiber optic drones for a while now, but the article writer mentions that they can get stuck with the wire. Sounds like he’s making the beginner’s mistake and thinking they drag the wire behind them instead of unrolling it from a spool.

“…but for our command’s occasional stubborn insistence that we fly even though it was almost certain that enemy jammers were operating in the target area.” The individual soldier rarely has the full picture that the command has. Sure, there are always bad commanders, but it could also be about forcing RU to keep their jamming equipment on by continuing with the drones and thereby denying RU the use of their own drones. Perhaps the command preferred to keep RU drones away rather than saving their own drones.

General complaints about training, but that can be solved separately, also not a reason not to invest in drones.

Very far-reaching conclusions based on anecdotal experiences…

  1. AFU: In total, 146 clashes were recorded during the past day.
Yesterday, the enemy launched one missile strike at the positions of Ukrainian units and settlements, using four missiles, as well as 51 air strikes, dropping 79 controlled bombs. In addition, carried out 5304 shelling, in particular 107 – from jet systems of salpogo fire, and engaged 3776 kamikaze drones for impressions.
  2. “Mountains of Rusnya, mountains🔥 Soldiers of the 3rd Air Assault Battalion of the 79th Separate Assault Brigade destroy the enemy near the village. Kostyantynopil, Donetsk region💪 🗡️ 🇺🇦”

  3. USA Trump/Musk
The conflict seems to be escalating..

    Musk:
“Elon Musk raises a warning finger to the politicians in the American Senate who are currently debating Donald Trump’s ‘big, beautiful bill,’ reports CNN.

In a post on X, Musk writes that the congress members who previously campaigned to reduce government spending and are now voting for the largest debt increase in history “should be ashamed.”

“And they will lose the primaries next year if it’s the last thing I do on Earth,” Musk writes.”

    Trump:
“The Doge Department of Efficiency should consider cutting the subsidies that Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s company has received. That’s what Donald Trump says in a post on Truth Social, reports Reuters.

Trump argues that “Elon may be getting more subsidies than any other person in history, by far.”

“Without subsidies, Elon would probably have to shut down and go back to South Africa. No more rockets, satellites, or electric car production. Our country would save a fortune,” he writes.”

  4. 👍😊 Azerbaijan: Office of the Russian state propaganda agency Sputnik raided in Baku. Office heads Igor Kartavykh and Yevgeniy Belousov arrested for spying for the FSB. Foreign Ministry of Russia complains that Azerbaijan is denying access to talk to their citizens in jail.”

  5. Europe – Economy

“Europe dominates the top of the list of which stock exchanges have performed the strongest during the first two quarters of the year. Since the beginning of the year, the Warsaw Stock Exchange has shown strong growth with an increase of almost 30 percent, closely followed by the Athens Stock Exchange.
Even Austria’s leading index ATX, the Madrid Stock Exchange Ibex index, and the German DAX have all shown clear upward trends.
European stocks have outperformed American stocks by a record margin.
While Europe as a whole has been performing very well, several Nordic indexes have been performing significantly worse.”

    1. Hmmm. Thought-provoking. Water is constantly flowing under the bridges. Smaller countries in the periphery like those in Scandinavia are stagnating and turning into subcontractors. The larger countries in central Europe are doing better. It’s some kind of reverse centrifugal force. Better climate as well. Time to move soon?

    2. Westley Richard

The Danish stock exchange is almost entirely driven by changes in the Novo Nordisk share price, the Finnish stock exchange is up 11%, the Swedish and Norwegian krona have both strengthened, which usually has a dampening effect on stock prices as even though they are traded in kronor, foreign investors value them in dollars and euros.

When not presenting the whole picture, one can prove anything with selected statistics.

        1. Westley Richard

States that there is a connection between exchange rates, interest rates, and movements on the stock exchange.

For example, the stock exchange in Athens is doing well because interest rates in Greece have fallen after the debt crisis in 2009-2010. It’s not that Greek companies have become better at producing and are more innovative than Swedish companies, but that they have obtained lower costs when it comes to financing.

  6. Yesterday the bus showed 40 degrees in a garage in Lisbon but it seems like it will be cooler this week. A bit more than what the phone’s weather suggested though.

1 hour 45 minutes north of Lisbon – cooler and now in the morning cloudy and below 20.

The Algarve is at the same latitude as Africa and then everyone talks about the temperature in the sun.

Will update temperature during the day.

  7. As a fire director and then on the artillery command staff, I try to think about what is happening in the war?
Even before drones, Archer, and Himars, the artillery had understood that as a principle, one should hit the target with the fewest possible shots. It’s a matter of:
    – locating the target
    – knowing where you are
    – knowing how the projectile moves through the air (ballistics)
    – correcting the shot if you miss

This is ancient, already in the First World War there were fire direction officers who observed where shells landed and provided corrections.

So the basic principle is simple: measure, calculate, adjust.

It’s all about the economy of the artillery barrage:
    – Less ammunition.
    – Less time.
    – Less revealed position.
    – Higher probability of hitting the target.

Whoever can shoot a few, precise shots gains both tactical and logistical advantages.

    That’s it?

    1. At the battalion level, you have access to at least three artillery companies/batteries, each with three to four guns, totaling approximately twelve guns. In addition, you can count on any other potential batteries in the brigade, and if coordination exists with other brigades in the same area, additional firepower that you can coordinate against a target, for example, in support of your own armored/infantry brigade’s advance or to counter, for example, an airborne assault.

That is to say, a firepower that far exceeds what you have through today’s drones that can be coordinated for, compared with drones, unmatched fire 🔥 on the target. We are talking about tons of ammunition in the same area at the same time, not a few hundred kilos here and there now and then. The drones are not even close yet..,

        1. Yes👍. It’s certainly a lot of ammunition in a grenade launcher that has no other effect than causing a bang. And Bonus, Excalibur, and owl grenades that can be compared in precision with drones are at least ten times more expensive.

In the vacuum of the US halted aid, Sweden will redirect its policy, says Minister for International Development Cooperation Benjamin Dousa (M) to SvD.

Now, 1.7 billion in aid budget will be redirected. A large part of it is sent to Ukraine, the rest to places like Sudan, Yemen, and Gaza. – Where it is most needed in connection to life-saving work.

Less to the Taliban and more to Ukraine 👍

      1. 👍

Let’s put the numbers into context:

        Kursk/Sumy — Pokrovsk:

        Kursk/Sumy — Pokrovsk, accumulated:

        Total:

      1. Lammis watching ruzzian empire go BOOM

😂 If a reminder about an unpaid bill is delivered by an armed gang criminal, then you are definitely connected to the Russian network!

  10. 10:30 cloudy and just above 20 degrees.

I seem to recall that it usually clears up after lunch, but it’s comfortable indoors with open windows and a slight breeze 👍

We’ll see if I dare to venture out smeared in sunscreen and wearing a sun hat to explore the area a bit.

    1. Feels a bit chilly, I have 26.5 in the shade! 😂 (Ventusky says 25).

Checked and it seems like cold winds are blowing from the north so it’s significantly cooler out by the west coast of Portugal. Further down by the south coast or inland, it’s between 30-35 degrees (2m).
(Significantly warmer at the feet, at 5cm it’s 40-50 degrees.)

  11. Soon I will dare to go out, if I haven’t boiled away there will be an update this afternoon, wearing that sun hat on my bluesky profile that my wife absolutely hates but refuses a straw hat to the end, in five years we can start discussing it.

We’ll do a quick food run to the nearby grocery store and if we feel we made it, we’ll take a detour into town, a 15-minute walk – if you collapse while there, it will be tough to walk back but no one has ever won by being a coward.

  12. 🇺🇦⚓ Military units and subunits of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, both within and outside of formations, continue to perform their tasks with honour and courage in repelling the full-scale armed aggression of the Russian Federation.

As a result of successful combat operations, the total losses of the enemy in June 2025 were approximately:

    🔥 occupiers (killed and wounded) – about 3,013, 🔥 FPV drones – 9,347 units, 🔥 motor vehicles – 53 units, 🔥 armoured combat vehicles – 15 units, 🔥 artillery systems – 7 units, 🔥 air defence systems – 1 unit, 🔥 Tactical-level UAVs – 43 units, 🔥 Shahed-136/131 UAVs – 159 units, 🔥 watercraft – 12 units, 🔥 ammunition depots – 23 units, 🔥 sea mines – 1 unit.

The enemy continues to suffer losses in personnel and equipment. The data is being verified.

  13. “The “Kupol” facility in Izhevsk was attacked by SBU drones that flew over 1,300 kilometers. The strike targeted enterprises specializing in the production of Tor and Osa surface-to-air missile systems, as well as the development of Harpy strike drones.”

    1. “Ukraine has carried out a drone attack on a military facility in the city of Izhevsk, over 1,000 kilometers into Russia, reports Kyiv Independent citing sources within the Ukrainian security service.

      – Ukraine continues to strike with surgical precision against Russian military-industrial companies contributing to the war effort, says a source to the newspaper.

Several people are reported to have died and been injured in the attack, which is confirmed by Russian authorities, according to The Moscow Times.”

  14. Unfortunately, according to DeepStateMap, a small area remains, but they may be lagging behind.

What do you mean “liberated”? It’s called illegally occupied.

“Russia claims to have taken full control of the Ukrainian region of Luhansk, reports AP.

    – Luhansk’s territory is completely liberated – 100 percent, says the governor appointed by the Kremlin in the occupation regime, Leonid Pasechnik.”

    1. On the one hand on the other side.

One side: 🇺🇦AFU reported this morning fighting in Novovodiane, located in Luhansk, just inside the Russian front line, according to DeepState. But the map from AFU this morning does not match this location. Name confusion?*

On the other side: 🇺🇦AFU also reported fighting in Novyi Myr, located outside Luhansk, in Kharkiv oblast, and therefore in an area a bit into Ukrainian-controlled territory according to DeepState.

In the Lyman direction, the enemy attacked 19 times, trying to break through our defenses near the settlements of Bilohorivka, Kolodyazi, Novyi Myr, Novovodiane, Ridkodub, Torske and in the directions of Serednie, Shandryholove, and Olgivka.

*Even with Novovodiane, Novovodyane and the Ukrainian Нововодяне spelling, I end up in the same location just inside the – according to DeepState – Russian front line in Luhansk. If I want to stay somewhat close to the front line and the eastern front. As the map in the middle above shows. Tried GoogleEarth and DeepState with Ukrainian language settings.

      1. The name confusion is unusually large in Ukraine. Sometimes there are names that you can’t even find.
Wouldn’t surprise me if it’s the Russians who have confused things and just think they’ve taken it all.

We’ll see if it clears up.

    2. Westley Richard

One does not need to include Russian propaganda in their reporting. It is perfectly fine to report without using Russian wording.
The media is dismal in its reporting.

      1. Checked what I believe is the source, AP, their headline is significantly better formulated (and better than mine, annexed is a different matter than occupied).

“Russia says Moscow now occupies all of Ukraine’s Luhansk region, illegally annexed in 2022”
        https://apnews.com/article/russia-ukraine-war-germany-d402df83478e83d86b30bd9b942d2532

Skimmed through the article and can’t see anywhere that they write anything about the area being “liberated”. Maybe the Russians have used those words, or maybe it’s Omni who made it up themselves.

        1. Westley Richard

          It just makes it worse.

          Tips from the coach

I usually try to cut out the Russian angle when I insert something. I don’t think it needs to be included, you can often write your own explanation. But even I sometimes miss and include the crap, but at least that’s my goal.

          1. Ah, you meant that I should have omitted it?

I prefer to quote as it stands (and comment on it if it’s too silly).

I assume that those of us hanging out here are not falling for Russian propaganda but rather that it’s good to highlight the foolishness.

Personally, I must admit that I am too lazy to do it (except in exceptional cases), but I urge those who have the energy to point out to the media when they are off track.

It’s been a long time since I shared anything, but even the idiocy they spew out in Russian media has some value in seeing occasionally so you know what crap they are trying to spread.

  15. “In Donetsk, the commander of Russia’s 8th Guards Army was eliminated during yesterday’s missile strike. The caption under the photo says: “We mourn.” Well, not everyone will be grieving. Good riddance. May the earth be heavy upon him.”

  16. “A young relative of a minister in the government is active in right-wing extremist circles – primarily in the Nazi group Aktivklubb Sverige. This is shown in an investigation by Expo.

The police describe the group as violent and with a large capacity for violence. They are assessed to have access to weapons and explosive materials, according to a report from 2023. In the same report, it is stated that information indicates that the network is “conducting surveillance of authority figures in order to exert influence”.

Despite the person’s involvement in right-wing extremist movements, according to information provided to Expo, the Security Service (Säpo) has not been aware of it.”

  17. “Donald Trump’s threat to instruct the Department of Efficiency to cut subsidies to Elon Musk’s companies does not scare the Tesla CEO. In a comment on X, he reacts to the president’s statement:

“I’ll say it straight out: pull everything. Now.”

Musk has also shared posts claiming that his criticism of Donald Trump’s budget is not about eliminating subsidies for electric cars, but about increasing the national debt.”

  18. North Korean IT workers are suspected of using fake identities to get remote jobs at more than 100 American companies.

Wired writes that more than 80 Americans have had their identities stolen. The fraud has been carried out to finance North Korea’s weapons program, according to the US Department of Justice.

  19. I wonder if Trump is really joking. I also wonder if Musk is starting to feel anxious about having helped him become president.

“The feud between perhaps the most powerful men in the world, Elon Musk and Donald Trump, continues and the American president says that the White House is looking into whether it is possible to deport the South African tech billionaire, according to several media reports.

    – I’m not sure, we’ll have to look into it, Trump responds to a direct question about whether they are considering deporting Musk.

He goes on to joke that Doge, the efficiency department that Elon Musk ran, should set its sights on Musk’s subsidies.”

  20. “In Nizhny Novgorod region, a military aircraft Su-34 went into the eternal flight. According to Russian media, the fighter crashed in the Kulebak area. Both pilots ejected, but only one has been found so far.”

  21. One still has to give Musk credit for being willing to take on the world’s most powerful person. A person who has also clearly shown that he has no limits whatsoever when it comes to (mis-)using the power tools at his disposal.

  22. Same in the winter actually – not so cold because the water mass holds back and then it doesn’t rain much here, it usually clears up further in.

    Weather-wise, this seems like Nirvana.

  23. Operational information as of 16:00 on 01.07.2025 regarding the Russian invasion

In the Lyman direction, the invading army carried out six attacks on Ukrainian positions in the areas of the settlements of Kopanki, Novyi Mir, Serednie, Zelenaya Dolina, Kolodyazi, and Mirne during the day; two combat engagements are still ongoing. Our soldiers are holding their ground and inflicting losses on the enemy.

  24. Then the budget was ready.

“The U.S. Senate has narrowly passed Donald Trump’s budget proposal, referred to by the president as the “big beautiful bill.” Several media outlets report this after a process in the chamber that has lasted for several days. It was passed with a vote of 51-50 after Vice President JD Vance cast the deciding vote.”

  25. “EU takes a tougher stance in trade talks with the USA and no longer wants to accept the general 10 percent tariffs – contrary to reports from Monday. Sources tell the Financial Times.”

  26. The French president Emmanuel Macron has had his first phone call with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Both the Kremlin and the Élysée Palace reported this on Tuesday, according to news agencies. Macron is said to have pressured Putin to agree to negotiate a ceasefire “as soon as possible” and to start talks to end the war.

      1. Yes, he is almost in the same league as Trump, who also insists on talking to Putin frequently…

Since Trump has failed completely and doesn’t even seem to want to try anymore, isn’t it right that someone in Europe takes over any contacts?
Isn’t that what they all keep talking about, that Europe must take more responsibility?

Even though I would prefer to see Putin completely isolated and instead ensure that everything Ukraine needs is sent, but that doesn’t seem to be happening.

  27. “Large tax cuts, cuts in healthcare, more money for the military and border security, and a shift away from green energy. These are the main features of Donald Trump’s budget that passed the Senate on Tuesday evening, writes the Financial Times. Tax cuts cost 4,500 billion.

The national debt is expected to increase by 3,000 billion dollars by 2034, which has prompted, among others, Elon Musk to direct scathing criticism.”
