The war in Ukraine 2025-08-16

Yesterday’s meeting between Putin and Trump turned out pretty much as one could guess, a big disappointment. No actions whatsoever to try to get Putin and Russia to stop their illegal war of aggression against Ukraine. Not even when it comes to the attacks on civilians, or returning all the kidnapped children. Instead of pressuring Putin, it seems they have agreed on what demands to place on Ukraine.

Whether Putin played Trump or if, as many suspect, Putin has compromising material on Trump, or if Trump owes him a favor, or something completely different, really doesn’t matter. The result is still a resounding victory for Putin.

I suspected that the meeting would benefit Putin and Russia in a way that would further delay any US countermeasures such as sanctions and tariffs, etc. Unfortunately, it seems to be much worse than that. Trump doesn’t appear to have put any pressure on Russia at all; rather, it seems like they discussed together what they intend to force Ukraine to agree to.
I haven’t seen any details myself, but it seems to indicate that everything now suddenly depends on Zelenskyy.
We have speculated that it could end up like this, but personally, I thought it would come after one or two more meetings.

That we ended up there already, without Ukraine or any representatives from Europe present, is remarkable and partly very bad for Ukraine. The discussions before the meeting about not deciding anything without Ukraine’s involvement seem to have been completely ignored.

NOTE! I haven’t had time to catch up on everything, and some things could of course just be rumors. It might be a bit too early to draw any conclusions about what the meeting has actually led to.

  1. AFU reports
    139 combat clashes
    111 aviation strikes
    213 KAB !)
    6,045 shells (98 from MLRS)
    5,659 kamikaze drones

!) It has been a long time since there were so many KAB. In addition, an enormous number of drones.

  2. “No ceasefire – but united on ‘several major points’

Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin did not agree on what a ceasefire in Ukraine should look like – but did agree on ‘several major points’. They said this at a joint press conference after the summit in Alaska.

The American president called the meeting very productive and that they agreed on a couple of ‘major’ points in the negotiations.

    – I’m going to make a few calls, but to keep it short, we had an extremely productive conversation. We have agreed on several major points, no agreement, but we have a good chance of reaching it, says Trump.

It was the Russian president who opened the press conference by talking about the relationship between the two countries. He said he is convinced that the American president “will help build new and better relations” with Russia.

    – Trump and I have good and direct contact and have spoken several times over the phone … one of the central topics has been the situation in Ukraine, he continues.”

“Putin’s invitation: ‘Next time in Moscow’

Russian President Vladimir Putin had the last word during the press conference with US President Donald Trump. It was an invitation for further talks – in Moscow.

It is the first time in eight years that an American and Russian president have held a joint press conference. The last time was in Helsinki in 2018.

Donald Trump called today’s meeting ‘extremely productive’ and expressed that more talks are likely. To this, Putin, who until then had only spoken Russian, replied:

    – Next time in Moscow.

To this, Trump replied kindly: ‘I will get some criticism for that, but I can see it happening’.”

“Warning to Europe: Do not try to sabotage

During the press conference with the American and Russian presidents, Vladimir Putin urged Kyiv and Europe not to ‘create obstacles’ to peace in Ukraine. This is reported by AFP.

Both Donald Trump and Putin called today’s summit in Alaska ‘extremely productive’ but did not reach an agreement on what a ceasefire in Ukraine should look like.

    – I expect Kyiv and Europe to perceive all this in a constructive way and not create any obstacles, not try to sabotage the emerging progress through provocations or intrigues behind the scenes, says Putin during the press conference.

He also called the relationship with Ukraine ‘brotherly’ despite the war.”

“Ukrainian sources: They don’t seem to have agreed on anything

Volodymyr Zelensky has gathered with his staff in Kyiv and was still waiting at 01.30 to be informed about what was said during the summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, according to sources close to the Ukrainian president, as reported by the Financial Times.

A presidential adviser calls it ‘very strange’ that Trump had not contacted them by then. Their early assessment of the press conference with the Russian and American presidents was that the summit is likely to turn out to be a ‘nothing burger’.”

“Analysis: Vladimir Putin got almost everything he dreamed of

US President Donald Trump traveled far just to come up with uncertainties. This is written by BBC’s Antony Zurcher in an analysis after the summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

Trump said that ‘there is no deal until there is a deal’, which simply means that, despite a several-hour-long conversation, there is nothing concrete, writes Zurcher.

‘For the man who likes to portray himself as a peacemaker and dealmaker, it seems that Trump will leave Alaska without any of it,’ he continues.

NBC’s Peter Alexander writes that Putin, however, got almost everything he wanted from the meeting.

‘He got a photo op with the American president on the red carpet. They shared the stage with handshakes and smiles. They also got to ride in ‘The beast’ (Trump’s limousine, ed. note),’ writes Alexander.

He also avoided a ceasefire and can continue the invasion. But above all, Putin avoided further sanctions from the USA.

Sky News reporter Ivor Bennet also writes that the handshakes and the red carpet were exactly what Putin wanted – it resembled a state visit.

‘Only North Korea would give a war criminal such a reception. It marks the end of his isolation from the West in the most spectacular way.'”

“Experts: Trump did not lose – but Putin won

Donald Trump did not lose, but Putin clearly won the summit in Alaska. This is what former US National Security Adviser and Trump critic John Bolton tells CNN.

    – Trump did not get anything except more meetings. Putin has come a long way to reestablish the relationship with the USA, which I believe has always been his goal, Bolton continues.

He lists several things that underline this: There was no ceasefire, no new sanctions, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was not informed before the press conference.

Charles Kupchan at the Council on Foreign Relations says to TT that it seems like the two presidents had a nice conversation, but that they ‘did not come to any conclusions’.

Hugo von Essen, Eastern Europe expert at the Center for Eastern European Studies, also says that Putin got what he wanted.

    – Maintaining a stable, good relationship with Trump, he tells Aftonbladet.”

“Editorial: Putin’s little smile on the red carpet says it all

Disgusting, shameful, and pointless. The harsh judgment comes from the Kyiv Independent’s editorial page after the Trump-Putin meeting last night.

‘A blood-soaked dictator and war criminal received a royal welcome in the land of freedom,’ writes the editorial page.

Several major American editorial pages also react. In the New York Times, Serge Schmemann writes that it is hard to avoid the conclusion that Putin once again bought himself more time to wage war. When the Russian leader invited to a new meeting in Moscow, Trump opened up to attending.

‘It is more likely that Trump simply loses interest in trying to end the war,’ he writes.

The more conservative editorial pages in the Wall Street Journal and the New York Post both state that peace in Ukraine seems far away because Putin has no interest in ending the war. Trump’s ambition to be a peacemaker is ‘commendable’, writes WSJ, but Putin is a ‘tough man’ who will only yield if the West stands united.

In the British The Telegraph, Jake Wallis Simons thinks that Putin’s smile on the red carpet ‘says everything you need to know’ about last night’s meeting. Putin is now negotiating Ukrainian territory with the US president – no wonder he is as happy as a lark, he writes.”

“Trump: No sanctions – now it’s up to Zelensky

There are no plans for new sanctions against Russia. This is what Donald Trump tells Fox News after the meeting with Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

The president had previously threatened with additional sanctions or tariffs on countries buying Russian oil, including China. But since the meeting ‘went well’, it is no longer on the table. However, he emphasizes that it may look different ‘in a week or two’.

He also says that it is now up to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to reach a ceasefire.

The negotiations between Putin and Trump did not lead to anything concrete. But despite that, Trump described the meeting as ‘extremely productive’ and that he had agreed with Putin on ‘several major points’.

    – I would also say that the European countries need to get involved a little, but it’s up to President Zelensky, says Trump to Fox News after the summit.

When asked by Fox host Sean Hannity about land exchanges, Trump replied:

    – Those are the things we negotiated about, and in broad terms, we agree on those things, says Trump.”

“Trump had a ‘long’ conversation with Zelensky – also discussed with NATO leaders

On the flight back from Alaska, US President Donald Trump had a ‘long’ phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, according to White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt.

According to Leavitt, Trump spent a significant part of the six-hour journey talking to Zelensky. Zelensky’s staff also confirmed the call, writes CNN.

The presidential plane landed at the American airbase Joint Base Andrews shortly after 08.00 Swedish time. Reporters on board were not allowed to leave the plane as Trump was reportedly in a call with NATO leaders, writes the New York Times.

There is still no further information on what was said in any of the calls.

Around 08.45, Swedish time, Trump was seen leaving the plane and getting into a black car for the onward journey to the White House, writes BBC.”

“Chicken Kyiv served on the Russian plane: ‘Wants to mock the USA, the West, and Ukraine’

On a chartered plane dedicated to Russian propaganda journalists, the dish chicken Kyiv was served on the way to the summit in Alaska. Several of them reportedly enjoyed this on social media, as reported by CNN and The Independent.

The trolling is well received among pro-Russian commentators. But Lithuania’s former Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis tells CNN Russia that the move mostly feels ‘cringe’.

    – Russia takes every chance to mock the USA, the West, and Ukraine, says Landsbergis, adding that the meeting gave Putin a world stage to do so.

Even after the summit, the Russian media is in ‘ecstasy’, according to CNN. Just like Kremlin spokesperson Maria Zakharova, who says that Western media likely lost their composure while following the meeting.

    – For three years, they talked about Russia’s isolation, and today they saw the red carpet rolled out to welcome the Russian president in the USA, she says, according to AP.”

“Zelensky to Washington on Monday for meeting with Trump

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will travel to Washington on Monday for a meeting with US President Donald Trump. He confirms this in a post on X, minutes after Axios reporter Barak Ravid received the information.

‘To discuss all the details of ending the killing and the war. I am grateful for the invitation,’ writes Zelensky.

After the Alaska meeting last night, Zelensky and Trump spoke for about an hour. Several European leaders were then invited to the phone call, which lasted about 90 minutes in total, he writes. During the call, Trump informed about what Putin said during the meeting.

According to Barak Ravid’s sources, Trump reportedly said that Putin does not want a ceasefire, but prefers a ‘comprehensive agreement to end the war’.

    – I think a quick peace agreement is better than a ceasefire, Trump is said to have said in the call.”

  3. “❗️Det var en meningsfull konversation med Trump, först en mot en, och sedan med deltagande av europeiska ledare. Totalt pratade vi i över en och en halv timme, ungefär en timme med Trump, – Zelensky. ▪️Ukraina är redo att arbeta produktivt för fred.”

  4. This video is for those who think only Ukrainians protested against Putin’s visit to Alaska. Americans were there too. 🇺🇸 “We need to stand with Ukraine. They’re our allies. Russia is our enemy.” Thank you, amazing people 💙💛 Justice has no borders.

  5. “The Russians would have been in Kyiv in 4 hours if they had taken the highway. But the Russian general decided to drive through farmland” – Donald Trump”

  6. “Putin skickade sin dubbelgångare för att träffa Trump i USA och uppnådde alla sina mål:

    – Inga nya sanktioner mot Ryssland eller dess allierade. – Ingen eldupphör i invasionen av Ukraina.

    – Avancerad potential för återställning av relationer med USA.

    – Förödmjukade president Trump och Förenta staterna.”

  7. “Trump struggled to walk in a straight line as he went to greet Putin” https://bsky.app/profile/meidastouch.com/post/3lwhmbdzpfk2u

Seems to fit in, not just in how he walks but in everything he does.

(NOTE! Satire! Important to know in this context is that it is entirely based on my personal opinion of Trump, whom I consider to be a really lousy person and the world would be better off without. The statement therefore lacks direct evidence and there are no proven facts to support my claim, but as an example, his vacillation with tariffs can be mentioned, which were both arbitrarily calculated and also seemed to vary depending on Trump’s mood).

I also want to add that it’s lucky for Trump that he has a private driver. He would never pass an American sobriety test where you have to walk straight along a line. I would also wish that test was mandatory to be president in the USA. Not because it probably doesn’t affect the ability to govern the country (depends of course on why one can’t walk straight) but simply because we would have been spared Trump then.

  8. Ah, so nice, then we don’t need to worry, everything is as it should be!

“Assessors after the meeting: Has little impact on the stock market

The outcome of the night’s conversation between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump does not seem to surprise economic assessors, writes Reuters.

“The only news was that absolutely no news came. The stock market is at record levels despite this conflict having lasted for three years. The market cares more about consumers, inflation, and comments from Wyoming next week,” writes Carol Schleif, chief strategist at BMO, in a comment.”

  9. Good, then I assume we will send troops to Ukraine! 👍
Maybe a bunch of Gripen with pilots and crew?

“It is clear that the pressure on Russia must increase to end the war,” writes Minister of Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard (M) in a comment to Expressen regarding the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russia’s counterpart Vladimir Putin last night.

She writes that the government will engage in close dialogue with Ukraine and with European and transatlantic colleagues about the way forward.

She concludes her comment by writing: “Sweden’s military, political, and civilian support for Ukraine is unwavering.”

  10. “Mr. President Trump, you stood there like a little white noodle, like a fanboy,”
    — said Arnold Schwarzenegger about Trump’s meeting with Putin.”

  11. Let the widows devote themselves to America first and exclude them from our actions and thoughts regarding Ukraine. The USA is no longer more relevant than, for example, Brazil or South Africa, except that the Americans have equipment that we can buy. But if possible, we should buy European equipment, secondly from reliable partners, such as South Korea, and thirdly from countries that are not our enemies, but not reliable friends either, that is to say the USA.

  12. None of this matters because Europe’s leaders are SPINELESS and don’t dare stand up to either the US or RU. Since we never hold leaders accountable, never say “enough is enough,” but just go along with it, we get screwed by the US, RU, and China! Time after time!
What kind of damn self-flagellation are we engaging in?
    It’s just talk, talk, talk!

No, I’m starting to lean towards the EU can go to h… and we in the north incl. the Baltics (maybe Poland) form our own alliance. With common trade, defense, and Baltic Sea policy.

Let the cowardly sauerkrauts and snail-eaters deal with their own cowardice!

    1. Well said.

Unfortunately, we are so few here in the Nordic countries that we need to involve the rest of Europe to be taken seriously. With so many different cultures and egos, discussions become lengthy, and decisions get watered down. If we had been 100 million people in the Nordics, it would have been easier.

    1. Well, it will be exciting to see what he comes up with. He did look a bit worn out, so I think he wants to get this off the table as soon as possible. After all, he has a dictatorship to establish.

He will blame Europe, saying it’s our and Biden’s fault that the war started.

The pressure on Ukraine is increasing, some or all of the American support will likely be stopped.

The tariffs on countries trading with Russia are being reduced or removed.

The tariffs for Europe vary depending on how we act on the Ukraine issue; if we advocate for a different settlement than TrumPutin, we will face higher tariffs.

  13. One question is now what this does and gives before zapad25?

The warning that Europe should not “disturb the path to peace” sounds quite strange… and what exactly is meant? From ryzk logic, all defense efforts are “warmongering”, and “obstacles to peace”… and that includes Ukraine’s right to defend itself.

Did Putin get the green light to rampage in the Baltics? in exchange for Trump not interfering…? The fact that Europe mostly seems to consist of spineless people makes Uza and Ryzzland see Europe mostly as a noisy dog…. Something one doesn’t really need to care about…

The statement that Europe must engage sounds a bit vague and a bit of “we’ll throw it in too so no one can say we didn’t think of them…”

    My thoughts like this…

And so we continue to delve into what we as civilians do when there is war.

    Glory to Ukraine!

    1. “Disrupting the path to peace” probably means choosing a different path than what the dear friends under Putin’s leadership have discussed in Alaska.

Now, we don’t know exactly what that means, but it’s hardly good for anyone other than Russia and Trump.

Expect a hefty tariff and sanction lottery against Europe (except Slovakia and Hungary) and Ukraine in the fall. Any decision friendly to Ukraine will be interpreted as disrupting the path to peace.

      1. It seems to be someone who has been hit before, but probably needs to wait and see if more information comes, haven’t seen anything yet about it being an attack. Local media describe it the same way as in Komi..🤔

“Another fire broke out at the Volgograd oil refinery. Local media reported that it was caused by a fuel spill during repairs to damaged storage tanks. The facility was recently attacked by Ukrainian forces.”

        https://bsky.app/profile/noelreports.com/post/3lwjkcdhfwk2v

  14. Trump does what Putin tells him, nothing else, and the USA is pleased with a weak Europe.

Now that we undeniably know this, EUROPE cannot do the following –

    – Send in 10 brigades to the Baltics

    – Establish a no-fly zone west of the Dnieper

    – Take up defensive positions west of the Dnieper – that is, the Dnieper front and towards Belarus?

That would free up a lot of UA forces.

    – Or even the Ukrainian main line?

    – Then all countries at a little distance start sending their equipment to Ukraine directly – do as Denmark and empty the emergency stockpiles.

    – Voluntary recruitment throughout Europe where the homeland pays the salary and then veteran pension after 1.5 years?

    1. Everything is diplomatically and politically resolved a long time ago.

If Putin now wants a real peace – then for heaven’s sake send in the peacekeeping troops.

Take a chance that Putin won’t attack European maneuver brigades directly?

Ukraine releases so much that they can start working on dismantling the Russians.

  15. Everything else being equal as the situation is today, Ukraine will back down except for some Syrian offensive that will not be able to break the downward spiral on its own.

They need full asymmetric warfare and much more support.

Iran is sending a lot of material.

North Korea is sending 30,000 soldiers and a HUGE amount of material.

China has built up the entire Russian arms industry and is sending material.

The staffing company Africa is sending a huge amount of personnel – apparently 20,000 Cubans as well.

No country in the whole world could have handled this better than Ukraine, no one.

  16. Trade tariffs, now we have an agreement but at the first threat from Trump we will impose a 100% tariff on the USA ourselves before he decides on the percentage.

  17. If Europe washes Ukraine, we have a bigger problem than we can handle today.

The single best decision we can make now is to let Ukraine grind down the sh1thole and then we asphalt it and salt the earth.

Doing as we have always done – nothing – no longer works, simply new times.

  18. Great post CB500four – I think you are very close to how the autumn will unfold from the Trump-Putin team in terms of signaling policy towards Europe and their targeted measures/actions.

The sanction tombola was brilliant 🤣🤣

  19. It was indeed gratifying to see Azov run over a Russian MRR and make mincemeat of them.

Guessing that the Azov spirit has now spread to an entire army corps and that is good.

  20. When it comes to Ukraine, we have completely misinterpreted all rules, laws, and everything else to the point where it’s best not to do anything.

Putin laughs at our harsh words and red lines.

Our promises to Ukraine have a half-life of a few months.

For the Baltics, we do not have the luxury unless we show that we are cowards – in the event of an increased threat against the Baltics, NATO and Europe, according to what we have already promised/agreed upon, should begin to deploy troops.

The purpose is to prevent an attack and create a threshold effect.

Claiming that Zapad 25 is not an increased threat is a lie.

In all previous Zapad exercises, Europe/NATO have shown up.

And in this one, Poland, Germany, and 16 NATO countries will show up.

    Just not in the Baltics.

    So…

-the increased threat has already been confirmed.

-then NATO/Europe, according to the current strategy, should present a threshold effect to Putin.

The alternative if we do not increase this threshold effect is that we must retake the Baltics because we have also promised that.

If we do not, NATO and Europe will fall, and the world will be at war.

    It’s as simple as that.

  21. Read about Operation Cabrit.

    AI summarizes

“designed to reassure allies and deter potential aggression on NATO’s eastern flank”

  22. Fram i Natten

It would be interesting to see the slimeball’s reaction to imposing a total no-fly zone over the whole of Ukraine and sending 49 Gripens with Meteors to enforce this.

What I mean is that what the Moscow state is doing is completely illegitimate.

So far, the West has not really seen through the bluff even once. Talk about a game of bluff poker. Leading to a bluff victory according to a well-known essayist.

  23. Here is an epic play on words, Ukraine is backing down everywhere and has requested a ceasefire.

Something that has completely disappeared is peacekeeping troops.

Why can’t EUROPE provide security guarantees, why do we lean on Trump who we KNOW is betraying us?

Now we have WORDS, do you think we will see ACTION?
