    HAMAS has proposed a partial agreement which involves releasing 28 hostages (18 of whom are deceased) in exchange for a 60-day ceasefire. Israel rejects the plan and demands the release of all hostages. Meanwhile, protests against Netanyahu seem to be increasing in Israel.

    Strange summit in Anchorage. Why was it held? Shouldn’t it have been clear in advance that the Russians were not ready for a ceasefire along the existing front lines. And wanted more territory from Ukraine, like entire oblasts in a complete peace deal. Or was the meeting still held with that knowledge just because Trump wanted to show himself on the world stage? There is a picture where Trump and Putin stand next to each other and Trump shines like a sun like a child who has met Santa Claus as Jake Broe said. He had probably achieved his personal goal with the meeting.

            It sounds like a fairly reasonable scenario, but Jake argues that it was never a private meeting but rather 3+3 and the reason for that was that Lavrov was the one actually speaking for Putin and not the copy.

            It also turned out to be a significantly shorter meeting than planned, perhaps because Trump thought the real Putin would show up, so it turned out to be just the copy and therefore it wouldn’t be possible to reach any real agreements either.

            Wild speculations, but of course not entirely unlikely.

            It would have been somewhat interesting to see what would have happened if a sniper had taken out Putin.

        Trump wanted to be seen on the world stage. I also believe he actually wants to achieve a ceasefire, primarily to receive the Nobel Prize, but also because war is bad for business.

        Putin wanted to come out of the cold and back into the warmth of world politics, and get Trump back on his team.

    Of course, there are plenty of personal tragedies happening daily.
    But right now, Russia is in stagnation while Ukraine has momentum.
    Momentum in a way that they have flow or tailwind.

    The support should not decrease thanks to Ukraine’s successes, it should increase instead.
    This way they have a chance to achieve lasting peace.

    Every European leader should emphasize this fact as soon as they have the opportunity now.

      Agree that it probably isn’t necessary with a ceasefire. The problem is if Trump manages to force a peace with lousy conditions and if Europe doesn’t pick up the pace.

      Also agree that Russia’s economy will improve every day, whether it takes 6 months or 3 years before it becomes decisive, it will eventually bring them down.

      What I don’t quite agree with is that Ukraine has momentum.
      The Russians continue to gain ground, even though it’s not decisive in itself, but reports of hardware losses also show that Ukraine is now losing more than the Russians. We don’t know Ukraine’s KWIA but it’s not entirely impossible to imagine that they are also rising along with the equipment.

      We would need to do more, there is always a risk that the Ukrainians might eventually be willing to give up and accept even lousy conditions or that soldiers start deserting.

      I think it would be very valuable if Europe made a stronger effort and showed that they mean business. Besides the direct help, it affects morale. 

      I don’t think it’s enough that the support doesn’t decrease, I think it needs to increase.

      Close the airspace, or send in soldiers to help at the border with Belarus. None of it may be war-winning, but strong symbolic acts that show both Ukraine and Putin that they mean what they say.

    Get the European arms industry going, give the finger to the USA if they don’t help and arm Ukraine to the teeth. Don’t buy their weapons.
    We lose by losing the USA as a trading partner, they cry!
    It’s nothing compared to what we lose if the Pissluffar Russians can lick their wounds for 5, 10 years and then attack again!

    The only positive thing in this situation is that Trump will be gone in 3.5 years, a lot can happen in that time, for better or for worse, but then hopefully Europe can have a partner again.
