  1. AFU reports:

    • 151 combat clashes
    • 71 air strikes + 37 missiles
    • 120 KAB
    • 4785 shellings (86 from MLRS)
    • 6322 kamikaze drones.

We are now at a seven-day average of over 6,000 drones per day.

  2. Continuing downward and now Donetsk (Toretsk, Pokrovsk, and Novopavlivka) are also affected. But still high there. Huliapil woke up after months of slumber. Otherwise, the number of attacks has been relatively calm on the southern front.

      1. Yes, it almost looks like that, a bit strange actually if that’s the case.

Maybe they don’t activate the F-16s for smaller attacks? It’s not exactly cheap to have them in the air.

  3. Near and over 1000 despite a decreasing trend in the number of attacks. That is Russian attacks? Ukrainian attacks are not counted well (combat clashes sometimes sound like that, can it be interpreted as both)? Regardless of Ukrainian attacks, how does KWIA get affected? Is it easier to survive if you go on the defensive?

    1. I suspect that it is reported regardless of who initiates it, but that sometimes one may refrain from reporting their own attacks to avoid revealing too much unnecessarily.

Defenders should have fewer losses regardless of which side, but in that case, one could conclude from it that the Russians are currently attacking with more soldiers.

Zelensky spoke about the successes of the Defense Forces

The President said that Ukrainian servicemen continue to achieve successes on various parts of the front.

Despite the overall situation remaining difficult, the Defense Forces of Ukraine are pushing the enemy out from several directions.

This concerns the encirclement of the enemy in the Dobropillia area and the clearing in Kupiansk.

Despite the fact that the overall situation remains difficult, the Ukrainian Defense Forces are pushing back the enemy from several directions.

This is about the encirclement of the enemy in the Dobropillya area and the clearing of Kupyansk. Zelenskyy stated this at a meeting with journalists on September 19.

    3/
    Situation near Dobropillya

According to the head of state, Ukrainian defenders are conducting counter-offensive operations in the Dobropillya and Pokrovska areas. Zelensky noted that in this area the russian occupiers wanted to surround the Defense Forces, but thanks to counterattacks, it is the Ukrainian troops who are surrounding the enemy.

“Today, about 330 sq. km are under our control – 160 have been liberated and more than 170 have been cleared of the enemy. We understand that this is where they will now transfer personnel to maintain their positions,” Zelenskyy said.

The president said that Putin’s army has brought up reserves in the Dobropillya area . This includes, in particular, the 61st Marine Brigade, which is trying to hinder the advance of Ukrainian troops

    4/
    The situation in Kupyansk

According to Zelensky, fierce fighting is taking place in Kupyansk, Kharkiv region, and Ukrainian troops are making corresponding successes there.

Counter-sabotage measures are being carried out within the city, during which defenders are identifying and destroying enemy forces.

“We have strong units operating there, they are destroying the russians who are concentrated there and trying to pass through.

Counter-sabotage measures are taking place in the middle of the city, our units are engaged in mopping up there.

We believe that the russians will be destroyed there,” Zelensky said.

    5/
We would like to remind you that the situation in the Kupyansk direction remains extremely tense .

The city, which is of strategic importance, continues to be the object of active attempts by the russian occupiers to break through the defenses of Ukrainian units.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine once again damaged the gas pipeline through which the occupiers crossed the Oskol River

  5. “Unread comments”

205 had a request to highlight the posts on the homepage to see if you may have missed new comments.

I have solved it now but in a different way, out in the right column there is now a so-called “widget” a block with the heading: “Pages with unread comments”.

It lists the pages where new comments have been posted since you last visited the website. It also appears on the right on the homepage.

If it doesn’t seem to work as it should, throw in a comment!
Or if it still feels like the posts on the homepage also need to be color-coded.

A bit more for the interested to read about how it works:
Previously, in order to highlight the new comments on each page, a cookie is saved (or actually local storage but it’s about the same thing) in your web browser. It saves the thirty latest pages that you as a visitor have been on.

In this new one, I check the dates for the latest 20 pages updated with new comments and compare it with what is saved in the web browser and the pages you have visited.

If there are pages that have received new comments, I list up to 10 of them.
If you click on one of the pages, that page will disappear from the list, but if there are more (up to 20 in total), the list can be filled with up to 10 more.

I think it’s better to have a list on the right, if there are several unread ones, they are shown directly on the post page you come to and you don’t have to go back and reload the homepage.
Certainly good for our ad revenue with extra page loads.. 🙂

Not sure if that’s enough or if I should also look at a highlight on the homepage?
Of course, there’s nothing stopping you from having both methods if it’s still a request.

    Limitations:
Since the pages you visit are saved in your web browser, the list will of course not be accurate if you, for example, switch between a computer and a mobile phone. They have separate lists.
You have probably already noticed this when it comes to highlighting new comments on a page because it’s the same there.

I may further develop it so that it is saved on the website together with the user account. Those who are logged in can then get a correct list regardless of the device, but of course, you need to be logged in as well otherwise the current method needs to be there as a fallback (and it is also needed for all visitors who have not registered).

If you feel that it is a problem today and would like it based on logging in, let me know.

  6. Off-Topic, Trump

“In a series of posts on his own social media channel Truth Social, Donald Trump urges Attorney General Pam Bondi to prosecute several of his political opponents, reports the Washington Post.

“We can’t wait any longer, it’s killing our reputation and credibility. They impeached me twice and indicted me (five times!) for nothing. Justice must be served, now!!!” writes Trump, partly in uppercase.

Trump mentions, among others, former FBI director James Comey and Democratic Senator Adam Schiff as two individuals who should face justice.

This is not the first time Trump has threatened to prosecute his political opponents. The Washington Post writes that the call is one of his most overt attempts so far to interfere in criminal investigations.”

    1. “That a second comedian has been removed from the TV screen since Donald Trump became president should scare every journalist who worked in Moscow in the early 2000s. This is written by Moscow Times’ Andrej Soldatov in an analysis after Jimmy Kimmel’s talk show was put on indefinite hold.

He writes that this is exactly how Vladimir Putin began to consolidate his power. By going after mainstream media and especially TV comedians.

The rhetoric behind the decision is also reminiscent of each other, according to Soldatov.

But for Jimmy Kimmel, it’s not over yet. Lawyer Aziz Huq writes in an analysis for Politico that Kimmel can and should sue both ABC and the officials behind the decision to shut down his talk show – as it directly contradicts freedom of speech.

“The Constitution does not guarantee Kimmel his own talk show program, but it guarantees that the government cannot silence him because of what he chooses to say,” Huq continues.”

    2. The one who was so against cancel culture is now canceling everyone who is not “politically correct” according to himself.

The USA has long been a stronghold of double standards, but Trump has now taken it to an almost Russian level.

  7. Off-Topic, China

“On a 760-hectare island on the Yangtze River in the city of Wuhu, rice fields are now being transformed into a plethora of data centers in an attempt by China to strengthen its position in AI, reports FT.

The ambition with the mega-cluster is to build a kind of ”China’s Stargate”, as a challenge to the AI giants Open AI, Oracle, and Softbank’s $500 billion investment in Texas.

The initiative comes as a response to the USA’s dominance in AI capacity. However, the Chinese counterpart will not reach the same scale as the American project but will be part of Beijing’s broader AI strategy, according to the newspaper. In total, there are four new data centers that will be operated by Huawei, China Telecom, China Unicom, and China Mobile.”

  8. Off-Topic, Iran and IAEA

“Iran will not resume cooperation with the UN’s nuclear energy agency IAEA, writes AFP. The announcement comes after the UN Security Council voted to reinstate the paused sanctions against the country.

In June, Iran cut ties with the IAEA after Israel attacked the country’s nuclear energy program. Iran has stated that cooperation will resume, but according to Germany, France, and the United Kingdom, they have not provided sufficient guarantees for this to happen.

The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs opposes the UN’s new sanctions.”

  9. Off-Topic, United Kingdom – Palestine

“The United Kingdom is expected to formally recognize Palestine as a state today, reports the BBC.

Already in July, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that the United Kingdom would recognize Palestine unless Israel took “significant steps” towards a ceasefire in Gaza before the UN General Assembly in September.

The Guardian writes that the announcement comes after the humanitarian situation in Gaza has significantly deteriorated in recent weeks.”
    https://omni.se/storbritannien-vantas-erkanna-palestina-i-dag/a/Mnz1j5

“Nine out of ten Britons are against recognizing Palestine
Only 13 percent are in favor of recognizing Palestine without any conditions. 51 percent of Britons are against the decision as long as Hamas still controls Gaza and the Israeli hostages have not been released. 17 percent do not want the United Kingdom to recognize Palestine under any circumstances.

James Johnson, founder of the opinion company behind the survey JL Partners, argues that this shows a discrepancy between Starmer and the British people.”

  10. Think about the implications if Ukraine beats Russia in a fair war 😶

The whole charade implodes and China’s escalation crashes as well.

But China and Russia have already taken the step and will be economically punished by the West because now the West sees the opportunity to pull off a Japan 1990 with China.

They only have one way and that is forward – straight into the wall.

    1. Not least domestically, not least Russia will not collapse like a house of cards. China, I have the feeling, is not as heavily invested in the war in Ukraine, but acts opportunistically in the war in hopes of weakening the West, which it sees as an obstacle to its own expansion plans. At the same time, it has not been obvious that China would take a course against Europe since it has quite significant investments there? Falls within the Sill Road initiative (e.g. Balkans), corporate acquisitions, etc. And where did the gilded bridge to Slussen come from? Who operates the subway line in the same city?

    2. Russia would probably cease to exist in its current form, losing a million men, and at the same time going bankrupt, without gaining anything, would probably set the wheel of revolution in motion.

China probably wants Russia to stay together in its current form, so they can supply China with cheap oil and gas, so they will surely increase their support to a limit, until they see that it no longer helps, then they will back off and let them implode.

When will China’s limit be reached then. I guess it’s when Russian successes fail, and decreased income from Western values can no longer be compensated with cheap Russian energy.

Trump’s actions also play a role, for the moment he seems ready to throw Taiwan under the bus to make a deal with Xi. Trump would love to stand next to Xi and Putin at a real dictator parade.

      1. Don’t you think China wants to secure access to oil, especially overland and not through shipping? But does it matter if it’s Russia that supplies it? In the short term, it would provide the most secure supply, but if Ukraine shoots down existing facilities, then China should conclude that Russia is unable to protect them. So maybe the next best option is for some free China-friendly former Russian colonies to take over the operations?

  11. What a corporate raid it would be to take down China.

Then we might as well forfeit all MENA investments in Europe and take back our companies – nationalize like Venezuela did?

    Then Sjöstedt would be happy.

    1. I believe in Sweden. Just look at Lovable, the world’s fastest growing company. We are also mentioned by Mario Draghi as a role model. We excel in defense, software & AI, industry a la Atlas Copco, ABB, SKF, etc. Or for that matter, electric aviation with Heart Aerospace. Also music, etc. This is good, because it’s easier for a Swede to invest in Swedish companies.

Anyway, I think the air has already gone out of Europe’s boost when Trump was at his worst with tariffs. Capital flows are redirected towards the USA. But those that are still directed towards Europe would probably prefer to go to Sweden!

Furthermore, if you look beyond the stock market and instead at the real development of companies, there is probably a lot of uncertainty about the USA.

Unfortunately, Europe is also uncertain regarding environmental laws, access to energy, etc. And what is certain is that we have an aging and decreasing population, so there won’t be much growth driven by large cohorts of young people.

Perhaps growth in the long run is more likely in emerging markets after all.

  12. Russia would probably cease to exist in its current form, losing a million men, and at the same time going bankrupt, without gaining anything, would probably set the wheel of revolution in motion.

    1. An interesting thing regarding American defense finance is that the gross annual revenue for the five largest defense companies in the USA has not increased that much in the past five years. Just checked on finance.perplexity.ai. Raytheon has increased from 62 to 80 billion which is decent though. But Lockheed Martin, Boeing, General Dynamics, and Northrop Grumman are pretty flat.

They are still bigger than Rheinmetall and BAE, but what this tells me is that in practice the USA is not really preparing for a war with China. Maybe it’s just a lot of talk after all.
