The war in Ukraine 2025-07-10

Depressing to see high losses of UAVs (drones) and cruise missiles even in today’s report. We will see what is reported in a few hours, but last night they sent a total of 741, which was a significant increase since last time. In yesterday morning’s report, there were 227 UAVs and no cruise missiles. Today there are 324 UAVs and 6 cruise missiles. So, there is a great risk that last night’s attacks were even more extensive.
It could be devastating for Ukraine if the Russians can maintain that level every other night.

It seems that the Russians are managing to scrape together some tanks again, suddenly we have 11 on the list of their losses.

  • 920 KWIA
  • 11 Tanks
  • 3 AFVs
  • 39 Artillery systems
  • 3 MLRS
  • 324 UAVs
  • 6 Cruise missiles
  • 81 Vehicles & Fuel tanks

  1. AFU: “In total, 201 combat encounter were recorded during the past day.
Yesterday, the enemy launched at the positions of Ukrainian units and settlements 5 rocket strikes with fourteen rockets and 74 air strikes, including dropping 122 controlled bombs. In addition, carried out 5 120 shelling, of which 113 are from jet systems of salpovogo fire, and engaged 4 037 kamikaze drones for impressions.”
  2. I suppose I like to read in that “now it’s over” every time Ukraine cuts a factory or warehouse. Unfortunately, Russia is big and seems barely affected by the hits. They apparently have large stocks or many factories that can still deliver misery despite Ukraine’s intense whack-a-mole.

At least we don’t see any decrease in terror bombings. 🙁

    1. There will probably be more Chinese parts used as well. The timescale for a high-intensity war is perhaps a bit longer than most of us thought. Sooner or later, Russia loses the ability to wage war. If China delivers material, it depends on the infrastructure to transport material, as well as soldiers and command structure.

The war is constantly taking new turns. Russian artillery is perhaps more or less knocked out, but that’s outdated because now it’s drones that matter. When Russia loses a capability, a window opens for Ukraine to strike. Such windows have opened but Ukraine has not had Western support to win. After a while, the window closes as the war takes a new turn.

Anyway, it’s expensive to build new factories, so it’s good for wearing down Putin’s war chest.

The development is moving towards Chinese technology and materials taking over more and more of the Russian defense capability.
This means that China will eventually have a huge influence over Russia’s ability to wage war.
Sooner or later, Xi will show Putin who is in charge.

      – 27 occupiers

      – 7 artillery systems

  5. USA – Tariffs on Copper

The tariffs cover, as I understand it, copper and semi-refined copper, not products made of copper or containing copper.

The tariffs on aluminum and steel were different because they included everything.
Importers had to try to figure out exactly what proportion of the imported product consisted of each. An administrative chaos with complicated calculations depending on percentages, and as I understood it, the tariff levels applied to the country of origin and not necessarily the country from which it was imported if they were different.

I find some mixed information but the USA seems to import almost 50% of all copper they consume. They mainly import refined basic materials (purified copper in various forms) for further processing.

Since finished products are not included, it means avoiding complicated administration, while these tariffs will cause trouble for American companies that manufacture products where copper is a large proportion. They will face higher copper prices while foreign manufacturers avoid this, giving them an advantage when selling to the USA.

I believe the sole purpose of these tariffs is to generate more revenue for the treasury, not to benefit the companies.

“Earlier this week, Donald Trump threatened with 50% import tariffs on copper to the USA. Last night, the president confirmed the plans and stated that the tariffs will come into effect on August 1.

“I am announcing a 50% tariff on copper, starting on August 1, 2025, after conducting a thorough national security assessment,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.”

“There is a feverish activity among copper traders following Donald Trump’s announcement to introduce 50% import tariffs on copper to the USA, reports Bloomberg.

After Trump’s initial announcement on Tuesday, copper futures in New York surged to a premium of around 25% over international prices. For traders who receive copper on time, there is money to be made, but also significant losses for those who end up on the wrong side of the finish line, the news agency writes.”

    1. Westley Richard

American companies are vacuuming the market for copper in order to import before the tariffs hit. One could have sold their copper mailbox with a good profit if it hadn’t already been stolen. 😤

Sweden’s export of copper is probably quite limited and we simply have to refine the copper in Sweden. The big loser is Chile.

Sometimes I think the media gets too worked up about US tariffs. There were almost warlike headlines about the coffee price going up with the new American tariffs against Brazil. Sure, the price goes up in the USA, but that means lower consumption, which means lower demand, which will make coffee cheaper in Sweden.
❤️❤️ Thanks to Trump for that decision.👍

      1. Saying it again – when I bought something from the UK for 2500 SEK, I had to pay an additional 800 SEK in customs fees.

Trump is not the only one imposing tariffs apparently 😶

  6. Off-Topic

Isn’t it just a matter of waiting to see what the ICJ and ICC come up with?
It feels absurd that the USA is sanctioning someone who is critical.
It would be different if she had incited violence, etc. but she poses no threat.

“The USA imposes sanctions on Francesca Albanese, the UN’s special rapporteur for the occupied Palestinian territories. Several media outlets report this.

Israel has been accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and of war crimes at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in connection with the fighting in Gaza. Albanese has been one of the strongest voices internationally condemning Israel.

The Guardian writes that the Trump administration’s sanctions against Albanese are the latest action against critics of Israel.”

    1. Another example.

“The Trump administration has used the controversial pro-Israeli website Canary Mission to identify over 100 pro-Palestinian foreign students and researchers. This is in an attempt to deport them, as shown by documents and testimonies in an ongoing trial, reported by Politico.

More than 75 of these have criticized the Trump administration. During the federal trial taking place in Boston this week, testimonies have emerged of researchers self-censoring due to fear of deportation.

It also emerges how involved the White House and Trump’s deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller have been in trying to revoke visas for pro-Palestinians.”

    2. Just Francesca Albanese isn’t uncontroversial, right?

Well, the USA (Trump) has indeed started to sprinkle visa bans and sanctions quite generously 😀

  7. How far should it go before one thinks it may be appropriate to do something about it?

“Disruptions in GPS signals in maritime navigation have become increasingly common lately, reports SVT Stockholm. The Swedish Maritime Administration has received alerts from both ambulance helicopters and cruise ships.

    – This is related to several hybrid activities. Someone wants to disrupt society and disturb us on this side of the Baltic Sea. It’s difficult to answer exactly why, says Kristoffer Hultgren, MSB.”

  8. I wonder if he will call Putin to get a list of who it is okay (= pointless) to sanction?
(Yes, my trust in Trump is really at rock bottom).

“Trump is open to supporting a bipartisan Russia sanctions bill—but only if he gets full control over its enforcement, Politico reports. The bill includes steep tariffs on Russian oil and uranium and 500% duties on buyers. Speaker Mike Johnson says it’s time to send Putin a clear message.”

    1. Westley Richard

Do I understand it correctly that it gives Trump the right to also lift imposed sanctions?

Sanctions also affect companies and financial markets and should be predictable and well-founded. Sanctions usually impact not only the sanctioned party but also to some extent friendly countries and companies.
      Unpredictability only benefits speculation.

      1. Trump seems to like being unpredictable (or if it’s just that he does as he feels at the moment). He probably believes that it gives him negotiating advantages, and it certainly does in some contexts, but overall it is perplexing.

  10. Great!

“The EU has reached an agreement with Israel to expand emergency aid to Gaza. This is stated by the EU’s Foreign Minister Kaja Kallas on X. “This agreement means that more border crossings will be opened, aid shipments and food deliveries will be allowed into Gaza, important infrastructure will be repaired, and aid workers will be protected. We expect Israel to implement each agreed measure.”
    https://omni.se/a/OoxyMb

  11. Russia has found a pace that works, robots and shahids are high-intensity but they manage to build up a stockpile on top of that.

North Koreans, Laotians (?) and now 5 million Indians who presumably guard the northern border.

Then you have a few hundred thousand minors from occupied areas who have been trained for three years – half a year’s consumption.

The unwanted children in Russia are not over yet.

And they are building up their strategic offensive reserves.

And Belarus has now decently trained its defense forces?

Trump’s game plan is for Europe to continue sleeping as long as possible so that Putin can continue as long as possible.

  12. I don’t think it’s great that there will soon be a full-blown political war in Sweden until the election.

The risk is that important issues such as our commitment to Ukraine, slowing down the beyond-the-wall nuisance, the country’s internal security, and clipping the wings of the gangs and criminal clans will be forgotten in the chaos.

The strawberry is indeed caught, but apparently there were 700 gang criminals abroad who are running operations in Sweden, so 699 left who are WhatsApping about the next contract killing.

Russian subversive activities are simmering in the background and constantly reinforcing everything, so our elected officials in all parties should have some responsibility.

    1. Isn’t it embarrassing to see how one side in the political landscape exploits the fact that a relative of a prominent politician, a child, has associated with extremists. Do politicians in general have no shame?

The first time I read about this, Morgan Johansson started by saying that one is not responsible for what relatives do. Wow, I thought, such rationality I didn’t really expect. But of course, it turned out to be just some kind of false alibi to then unleash full criticism.

      1. Now a precedent has been set for what is okay to do, and it will affect all political parties in the parliament about equally until the election, and many children will feel like shit for being publicly exposed.

  13. I have gained a pretty good understanding of how difficult it is for our politicians to navigate tough times.

During good times, they don’t really need to do anything, which they take advantage of by embarking on all sorts of fun projects with money that isn’t noticed until times get tough and they have to start doing their job.

It’s really only Finland that has managed their good times well and stands strong, along with Mette in Denmark who seems to have a titanium skin and has whipped the entire political landscape into shape.

Merz is probably slowly approaching orbit, surprised that no scandals have erupted yet given how hard he has come out, he is probably high up on Putin’s blacklist.

  15. Have you also read that Elon’s life’s work is starting to sway very significantly?

Earlier it was written that he had leveraged everything with Tesla shares and now they are supposed to be below the magical threshold from what I understand.

    1. We apparently need to tighten up tomorrow. As they used to say (possibly still do): You can have fun without alcohol, but it’s foolish to take chances!

  16. Starting to get tired of Trump except for his victory perfume that smells like a winner, have used up half the bottle.

But yeah, he will leave $10 billion richer and is probably satisfied.

  17. Hey, a consideration…

A group from Cornu is planning to meet IRL, I consider it inappropriate considering the security situation,

a bit like serving Russia and other actors information on a silver platter.

Yes, avoiding can be to “give in”…

    Both arguments are valid….

I think that one doesn’t need to expose oneself unnecessarily, especially not a smaller group.

    What do you think?

    1. You actually have a point, for me it would be enough with two guys knocking on the door and informing me that if I wrote another line, the house would burn down, or even worse, threatened not to go after the teenagers 😲

A bit why I chose anonymity even though the risk is really small.

What should they do – a good binge I hope?
