Today, we will go through the fronts and I don’t find it particularly uplifting reading at all. My immediate question is what Europe’s leaders are thinking, feeling, and experiencing when they receive the same briefings (that I usually do for them)?
We have long advocated that we should look at what is happening and not report everything that is said and take it as absolute truth.
Our leaders have to try to assess whether Ukraine is falling apart or not, and then try to ensure that they do not.
Considering what was said in 2022 by the leaders with the worst impulse control, evidently many hoped that Ukraine would just give up so that everything could return to normal – the Ukrainians were troublesome for not allowing themselves to be eradicated.
For example, Scholz, the eel…
This one was also interesting, now Zelensky is a good source and Igor Shushko is at least pro-Ukrainian. Biden played with Ukraine’s sovereignty for a better and brighter world and happier children 🙏
We no longer need to guess about Trump – he is in direct contact with Putin or with an intermediary and does what he can to facilitate Putin’s ethnic cleansing of Ukraine. What exactly he gains from it remains for me to figure out, but it is certainly not good for Europe.
In the cases of Trump, Biden, and Scholz, they probably had slightly different motivations for why an overrun Ukraine wasn’t/isn’t really that bad if they can just consider making this small sacrifice for the greater good of the world.
I believe (know) that Europe’s leaders were also of the opinion until at least the fall of 2025 that the worst thing that could happen was that Ukraine was forced into peace. Putin played everyone in the usual way.
Starmer, Merz, and Macron even pushed that line all spring and promised biblical consequences for Putin which they then immediately backed down on – a pure art of the deal in that negotiation, they must have read the book 😐
I didn’t think that Russia could sustain its high-intensity war much longer after Trump took office, and I thought that Putin would be eager to have frozen fronts under Trump and keep what he had taken, so a gross underestimation of my part in terms of ambition level.
What did I rely on then – they didn’t manage to retake Kursk, the refineries were on fire, knocked out heavy vehicles were older, doctrine changed to swarming infantry, the North Koreans arrived, the artillery was broken, UA drone weapons gained the upper hand, and Biden had to go so the stumbling blocks’ stumbling block was rounded.
Choose one of two – the condition of UA was a bit worse than I guessed or RU managed to get organized after countless other chances.
Or a combination of both since everything is always relative.
Tatarigami is a bit worried
UA had plans for an offensive in the fall of 2024 as usual and they have not carried out offensive operations since the summer of 2023 except for Kursk.
RU has been conducting offensive operations since the fall of 2023 and continues to advance to this day.
If I were to guess, I think it was a combination, poor support from the West, Biden hesitated in the end, Trump began to sabotage directly, Putin gained higher confidence, Ukraine didn’t dare to take risks, and so on until we are where we are today.
Trump managed to negotiate away Kursk and the Russians were left alone long enough with a type of warfare they are comfortable with – offensive on their terms, and they could then build up capability.
So the result is that RU has been able to carry out high-intensity offensive operations since the fall of 2023 and continues to do so today in July 2025.
Does Europe have a handle on the situation?
I don’t think so, and I believe that Ukraine is hiding the worst, but I am curious as to why we have had a total absence of offensive operations since mid-April from the UA side and allowed RU to advance. Either they are stuck in everything is always relative or they have some mischief going on that they are sneaking around with, and we in Europe don’t know what it is.
To me, it looks like an undefinable risk that our leaders in Europe glance at with half an eye and then fall back asleep.
Now today, in the summer of 2025, every bigwig in Europe also knows that Putin does not intend to stop until Ukraine is no more and that he is casting longing looks all the way down to the Iberian Peninsula and the Portuguese smoked sausages.
We probably also know that Trump is not our friend even though his victory perfume is incredibly good.
So what assessments are actually being made now when Ukraine retreats at the fronts?
I seem to hear more and more “Europe must be ready for war,” “war in 2027-2030” not only from the Baltics and Finland but also from our leaders in the West.
So my usual question, which may be starting to get a bit tiresome, is then – wouldn’t the best cost-benefit be to help Ukraine defeat Russia?
We provide the cash, and they provide the sacrifices in human lives?
For a better army than Ukraine’s, we probably have to search, and to discard it would be the height of arrogance since it would directly come back to us like a violent boomerang.
If the alternative is that Europe will go to war, then I think everything before war is preferable, don’t you?
So why aren’t we doing anything?
By “doing nothing,” I mean things that have been politically and diplomatically unlocked for a long time and things that are self-defense.
-why haven’t the Baltics remilitarized their borders?
-why haven’t EU countries agreed to send 10-20 brigades to the defense of the Baltics, which have gone into defense in eastern Baltics?
-why haven’t we shot down robots and drones that have strayed into the rest of Europe?
-why haven’t we stopped the shadow fleet on environmental, insurance, and legal grounds?
-why haven’t the EU allowed Ukrainian instructors to train our troops, and why haven’t we, after three years, trained reservists on a large scale and started preparing for war as Finland and the Baltics have done (we have already agreed in the thread to do as Finland – they are the experts)?
-why haven’t we overridden Orban and Fico?
I don’t have good answers here other than it’s probably a mix of not wanting to escalate, being cowardly, and not daring to make the tough decisions.
The Baltics are exposed, and we are still giving Russia a lot of euros for its arms industry through our purchases of oil and gas that we allow the shadow fleet to transport undisturbed.
As for Putin, it’s still open season, I guess, or do you see something that I don’t see, some red line he would respect 🧐
And then we have the slightly tougher decisions that we could actually get away with if we were a bit more daring risk-takers. We can probably assume that now when we have seen how Putin reacts de facto when his red lines are crossed, he grumbles a little quietly and turns away.
-LV or no-fly zone west of the Dnieper.
-take care of border protection at the Belarus border, Polish SOF in customs uniforms. Another suggestion has been to locate all training of Ukrainian units with Western instructors up by the Belarusian border.
-allocate resources to Ukraine seriously from our stocks, we have HUGE amounts of weapons we could send and armor protection is what’s important. Portugal, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, and the UK don’t need heavy vehicles, for example.
What do we think here then – we can’t agree, too difficult a decision for career politicians, cowardice, Russian subversive activities where they use all the tools in the box, the US would complain heavily, and the lack of trust in each other including Ukraine?
Neither of the above is particularly flattering and it is quite clear that we have had good times and that our politicians find it difficult to start working according to the job description.
Unfortunately, Europe is not getting stronger but weaker, now Spain has taken the step over to the dark side and the Czech Republic is also at risk.
But perhaps the most important thing is that we have not yet embraced warfare in 2025, which Russia has learned the hard way and China is trying to get ahead of.
Sweden has planned to train 10,000 conscripts/year until 2030.
https://www.regeringen.se/regeringens-politik/totalforsvar/forsvarsbeslutet-20252030
Isn’t it time to introduce broad military training for everyone of the right age to be able to kill Russians today (17-63 😀)?
If we lack instructors, there are hundreds of thousands of experienced Ukrainian former soldiers who are unemployed and looking for work.
Yes, I also see that not much is happening, especially in the drone weapon area, but that’s how it is.
We will get away with this slowness as long as Ukraine doesn’t collapse, but if they do – then we will be left with exactly the whole problem and own it. And the US stands on the sidelines laughing and starting to sell everything to us at double the price.
If I were a European politician, I would ensure that Ukraine can liberate its country even if the risk is that Russia becomes a country with a hundred warlords. Them or us – eat or be eaten.
I still believe that Trump is destabilizing the EU, I’ve been airing this for a while now and it seems so. Increasing spending in NATO is certainly needed but it also means increased expenses, and now it’s Europe that has to pay for the weapons Ukraine is supposed to receive from the US. Which, one could argue, is well done by Trump, but I’m trying to make a different point 😀
Apparently, it’s their warehouse they’re picking from and therefore.
China is still holding back some materials/resources and we went through at some point what they could do by creating shortages.
Trump’s idiotic tariff war because he’s an idiot is probably following a Russian model or wish and not at all idiotic, but he keeps adjusting himself all the time?
He even hit Japan when they took it very seriously and sent a delegation to Washington with twelve-pointers – the US didn’t even bother to respond on WhatsApp.
Then Trump said that since Japan didn’t want to negotiate, they would face tariffs – and the Japanese were at the hotel in Washington watching it on TV when they were blocked on WhatsApp and took another bite of sushi.
Same with the EU, we have been the adults in the room but Trump finds (makes up) something that he takes as an excuse to hit us hard with something big in order to harm us. He preferably wants to get us angry and say something on TV that he can refer back to and hit us with even more.
So far, it’s mostly Western countries that he has had in his sights, it started with Canada and Mexico, for example?
Yes, he threatens everyone, but if you look at who he goes after.
UK, China, and Vietnam have received trade deals and Russia is the exception. He has bombed Iran and I couldn’t find out if he has new tariffs against them 😀
https://time.com/7300389/trump-trade-deals-tariff-letters-deadline
He is variably upset with Canada, Mexico, and the EU, and now we are probably a focal point again?
I am of the opinion that Trump, following a Russian or his own design, is trying to destabilize the world economically.
He is doing this at a time when we are already on the brink of a global war.
I think he was forced to hit Iran because Israel had leveled the country otherwise – so the least bad option for the mullahs.
I believe he is trying to destabilize the EU just as he did with Ukraine.
I didn’t make it to the fronts 😶
Will have to be tomorrow.

Russian losses in the war in Ukraine:
The offensive wave in Kherson continues with around ten attacks per day, soon a week. Continued decreased attack activity in Kharkiv, but back in Sumy/Kursk. Lyman, Pokrovsk, and Novopavlivka remain the most active fronts with about the same strength in attacks every day.

Maybe a new drone in the making!? 😎
Yes, in balsa wood with a huge cone charge 😀
Time to strike the Russians with a big hammer, trying to softly press them with various sanctions that they bypass is worthless.
Europe needs to wake up and realize that if the Russians get their way, Putin will forcibly manage one of the world’s best armies that has been in battle and send them towards NATO countries.
Send Russia to the museum, once upon a time there was a dictator…

86 KAB, still low.
AFU: “In total, during the past day, there have been 171 combat encounters.
The enemy launched two rockets and 54 aviation strikes at the positions of Ukrainian units and settlements, using two missiles and dropping 86 controlled aviation bombs. In addition, carried out 5574 shells, 68 of them are from jet systems of salpovogo fire, and involved 3869 kamikadze drones for impressions.”

No one cares is probably the truth…
Trump is still unwilling to take a stand against Russia.
“Asked whether Melania has influenced his views on Putin, Trump said she’s “very smart” and “very neutral,” adding that she’s a bit like him—someone who simply wants the killing to stop. “People ask if I’m on one side or the other,” he said. “I’m on the side where people stop dying.””
She should receive some form of award from UA. A big medal.❤️

That one has lost trust or that one is neutral because they think what has happened is completely irrelevant to his role as Minister for Migration, I understand, but I don’t see how his actions would lead to increased trust…🤔
“The trust in Minister for Migration Johan Forssell has increased among his own voters, according to Aftonbladet/Demoskop. The survey was conducted after Expo reported that Forssell’s son had been active in right-wing extremist circles, something that Forssell eventually commented on in TV4’s Nyhetsmorgon.
20 percent of Tidö voters say they have gained increased trust in Forssell after his handling of the information, while 10 percent say their trust has decreased.
Of all respondents, 44 percent say trust has decreased.”

Why not? One might think it’s a pathetic attempt to score cheap political points.
We had a young S minister in a photo who socialized with questionable individuals a few years ago. It was brushed off and deemed ridiculous criticism, they said.
Yes, I understand that one might find the criticism ridiculous and not let it affect them, but how one can gain increased trust is difficult for me to understand. This applies to both cases (if it was indeed the case that the S ministers gained increased trust).
But do you mean that out of pure sympathy, one suddenly trusts the person more just because one thinks they have been unfairly treated, and not because the person actually did something to make you trust them more?
Yes, I think so.
Media has tried to make a political point out of Forsell’s opinion.
The issue that Forsell has expressed is parents who do not act, encourage, or even benefit from children who commit criminal and blameworthy acts. Who watch as the child throws stones at the police, buys knives for their children, teaches them how to steal and shoplift, teaches them racist chants, uses them as drug couriers. Unfortunately, there are such parents in society.
There are also parents who react with dismay when their child makes a mistake and do their utmost to ensure it is not repeated.
We as parents recognize ourselves in JF and would in many cases have acted like him. To protect the child from the hatred of the left and at the same time correct the child.
I am not the least surprised that he receives sympathy at the same time as one of his key issues is highlighted.
We are all Nazis 😳
The greasers maybe, they are Nazis, right?
I think that maybe it’s not excessive if you’re asked about a minister you have no opinion about, rather that the rating might be too low even if it’s your own minister. Now that you’ve gotten to know the minister in a controversial issue, you have an opinion. The rating is no longer too low and the trust increases. The statement can perhaps be verified by comparing with another minister that you have an opinion about (who has made a name for themselves): is the trust for this minister as high or higher than for the minister of migration?
All advertising is good advertising, as the saying goes in terms of marketing?
No one really remembered the “raggare” subculture, but now everyone knows who the “raggare” are again, and they will surely also get a boost. I have seen a lot about the dance band week in Dalarna where people joke that they are Nazis.
It is probably part of the general trend in the entire Western world, that people are politically polarizing themselves. That an attack, genuine or just perceived, makes one have to counterattack. That people become more resistant to facts and more emotionally driven, on both flanks. Could it be as simple as it has been too long since we went through total war. The generation that experienced the Second World War with adult eyes has died out. Perhaps we have a “peace-damaged” public generally in the entire Western world, which makes some far too passive, and others far too aggressive.

“Patriot missiles are already being shipped to Ukraine under the new deal with NATO countries, Trump. Important who pays apparently 🤣🤣
Damn Trump to get Europe to spend more money on weapons for Ukraine 😡😡
Very important indeed. And he refers to NATO as “they”, so apparently he doesn’t include the USA in that.
In this way, he manages to make it difficult for Europe, while profiting from the war. Additionally, he provides the opportunity to control how American weapons are used. Presumably, Russian oil infrastructure would be a big no-no.
Waiting for punitive tariffs against France, Italy, and the Czech Republic for not agreeing to buy American.
Yes exactly to the last – there are a couple of countries that have soured.
I wrote about it on Blueksy that it was a sh1tty deal.

“Donald Trump’s trade war now seems to be leading to higher inflation and reduced job growth in the USA, reports the Wall Street Journal. The price increase in the country was the highest since the turn of the year in June, which is a sign that companies have started passing on the costs of tariffs to consumers.
“The effects of the tariffs are finally showing up in inflation, although still in a modest way, suggesting that companies have so far absorbed a significant portion of the effects,” says Eswar Prasad, economics professor at Cornell University, to the Financial Times.”

Yes, thank you, but…
Is there capacity? The type of weapons they need? They need them now…
Production capacity should have been significantly expanded since 2022. There has been a lot of talk, but little action.
Trump will likely interpret this as them taking away his right to profit from the war, and his ability to control the war by cutting off the flow of weapons when things start going too well for Ukraine. Be prepared for tariffs if you don’t buy American weapons.
Trump rants about stopping the killing, but so far he has only made it easier for the murderers.
If the opportunity arises, I am completely on board with France’s track.
“After being vocal critics of American support for Ukraine, several Republicans have now changed their stance as Donald Trump has shifted his position. This is a clear evidence of the president’s firm control over the party, writes New York Times’ Robert Jimison in an analysis.
Trump campaigned on a foreign policy based on ‘America first.’ But now he has shifted his support to Ukraine.
This has led to ‘remarkable swings from some of Trump’s closest allies,’ including the fact that the policies they previously called reckless are now described as brilliant, Jimison writes.”
Maybe it’s brilliant?

Syria
As we have clarified and warned, Israel will not abandon the Druze in Syria and will enforce the demilitarization policy we have decided on,” he said in a statement, AFP reports.

It is not easy for minorities in Syria. The new regime is cracking down on Kurds and Druze, among others.
The Druze receive some protection from Israel. Let’s hope that the new regime withdraws.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reports that at least 21 Druze, a religious minority group, have been executed by Syrian government forces and its allies in the city of Sweida. This is reported by AFP. Among other things, three children are said to have been shot dead in front of their mother.

I still don’t understand why the Alawites didn’t hold the coastal strip.
The mountains were a fortress.
To Bashar, who had been promised eternal life in Moscow, bathing in a portion of his stolen money (the other portion taken care of by Putin).
Is that a well-established connection you’re making?
There are a couple of million Alawites and along the coast also the Christians, they didn’t lack weapons, militias or any capability at all.
So are you saying that they were persuaded to remain passive so that Assad could live in Moscow?
Well, the rumor that Russia stole Assad’s money has been circulating 🤣🤣🤣
Johan asks why the Baltic countries have not mined along the border?
They have decided to withdraw from the Ottawa Convention. There is a certain notice period, probably six months if I remember correctly.
At least it doesn’t happen overnight.
Yes, it’s important to follow the rulebook here 👍
And not to withdraw too early 👍
Digging trenches and cutting down trees is also not environmentally friendly, and all areas towards the border are nature reserves 😀
Spain is starting to become a source of concern –
As MXT posted above, they have sold crucial military equipment to Russia so that the war can continue.
They have approached China in several steps.
They have dismantled electricity production just like in Sweden and Germany, so the risk of extensive European power outages is now quite high.
They do not want to contribute to the shell protection by burning pesetas on more equipment.
In the country, they have high unemployment, and there is an anti-tourism wave where they do not want cash-rich tourists burning money in the country.
They are also increasing taxes in the country and trying to make a point with money.
Since I have liked Portugal for a long time, I should probably applaud their anti-tourism because Portugal has had a significant upturn in recent years.
But overall, this is bad for Spain, and the amount of EU funding they have siphoned to then shoot themselves in the foot and undoubtedly cost the EU more money in the future is a bit sad…
This is not a small country, and the EU is heading in the wrong direction right now when we need to go in the right direction.
Then you have another problem that we have had for a long time – since we have Schengen, some countries become entry points, you buy visas, you get a pass for cash, those we do not want in – Russians and Chinese come in, and then there is continued high migration.
Spain is also not one of the new members at all and should take care of themselves, but they are not doing that at all.
Portugal seems to be holding the line, which is good even though I have notoriously struggled to accept that the country is full of Portuguese, they are truly everywhere.
Considering how the EU has evolved, it’s not surprising that we have countries obstructing and turning to other directions to see if the grass is greener there.
If the EU is not reformed and stops interfering in everything, more countries will start looking elsewhere. One must return to the origin and stop acting as if all countries are the same and can therefore be governed in the same way.
Yes – my parents always called the EU “a club for mutual admiration” and they were not wrong.
It has become an elite/nobility above all others who, in order to justify their sky-high salaries, point fingers and criticize everyone else, who are constantly increasing in number.
I fully support free movement, work, and free trade, but otherwise there should be self-determination.
Except in border protection, which must be mandatory so that free movement is not threatened. And the crime that is borderless.
And then a loose framework where different countries are welcome to cooperate more if they want to on any issues that do not conflict with free movement, work, and free trade.
But we must tolerate differences because we are 27 countries that are fundamentally different, and you cannot force 600 million people to have the same opinion on all issues.
However, those who do not like how a country operates can move to 26 other countries, right?
You have to qualify for social safety nets through work, and these damn EU subsidies probably need to be reviewed as there is too much fraud involved. The EU does not need a huge budget, they need a streamlined organization that handles its core mission.
The fact that countries have different living standards is not something that needs to be leveled out by taking money from the poor in rich EU countries and giving it to the rich in poor EU countries.
Since citizens have free movement, it is fair anyway – everyone who wants to can move to attractive countries.
No one is saying that Bjurholm must have the same public services as central Stockholm and that otherwise it is unfair, right?
But those who think Stockholm is better than Bjurholm can just move to Stockholm?

“In her address, Grand Duchess Maria of Russia warmly greeted the participants in the opening ceremony of the Imperial Church History Museum in Yevpatoria. She thanked His Eminence Metropolitan Lazar of Simferopol and Crimea and the clergy of the Crimean Metropolis, the Orthodox Cultural and Educational Center of St. Nicholas Cathedral in Yevpatoria, the “Imperial Cultural Center,” and other state, Church and public figures, whose efforts and assistance made this new Museum possible. The Grand Duchess also noted that it gives her “the greatest joy that the traveling exhibition ‘The Imperial House of the Romanoffs: Past and Present,’ founded a quarter of a century ago in Kiev, and having visited different regions and undergone many trials, has nonetheless endured and is now entering the next phase of its development on a qualitatively new level.”
