If you cross the frontlines, unfortunately a lot happens in silence, or not in silence but when Ukraine counterattacks, we make waves, but when they give up 4km deep in dominant terrain, we prefer to keep quiet about it.
Here is an overview of the frontlines, for better or for worse.
We discussed Kamyanske a while ago and pointed out that UA had withdrawn from dominant terrain in an area where, on paper, they were not much weaker than RU.
RU is advancing further in Kamyanske – check the little finger marked in red 😐
If RU reaches Stepnohirsk, they can start flanking the southern front.

Things are lively in Vovchansk as well.
The situation in Pokrovsk is not good, and here is the link to the information about Russian reconnaissance units inside Pokrovsk, the source should be reliable.

Then we have Russian advancement into Kupiansk, so the first bulge is likely punctured soon if not very long.

If you look at Russian losses, they have plummeted in recent months, soldiers at least, but go through all the bars yourself. This is happening while Ukraine is releasing more and more dominant terrain.

As you know from reading these daily updates, Ukraine has built a defensive line in an unnatural arc outside Donetsk Oblast.
A bit quietly, we have started losing a lot of terrain near Bilohorivka, almost all the way to Siversk.

Then we have the Kreminna forests.

Up in northern Luhansk, another attacking unit is soon reaching Oskil.

And down by the Dnieper, they have taken the entire delta.

It has never looked like this in a whole war, and especially it’s the peak season for offensive operations since mid-April and it might end in early October.
Either Ukraine is retreating because they intend to move back to their new defense line outside the area Putin wants to take, or they are preparing for a major blow.
I don’t understand why they are giving up dominant terrain if they are preparing for a major blow – for example, Kamyanske.
Now the whole world is occupied with Palestine, Starlink is hosting, 30,000 North Koreans have arrived, Ukraine warns of a Russian offensive, and there are retreats at all fronts.
If I were a leader in Europe, I would start looking at the alternatives already, but what are they?
If Russia has a strategic offensive reserve, can we sacrifice troops in Ukraine?
If we send our LV to Ukraine – what do we have left against thousands of Geran drones and 2,000 robots that Russia has in reserve?
Do we dare a bit with Hungary and Serbia, hoping the fortress doesn’t get any ideas 😀
I lean towards the idea that Ukraine is heading towards its rear defense line in a delaying action and intends to fortify it. They fight like lions for every meter but avoid unnecessary losses.
This is not what Sirsky is known for 🧐
This line is not far west of Pokrovsk, for example.
Unfortunately, if RU has access to drones, Geran drones, and FABs, you are just moving the problem elsewhere.
The line is also not mined because we in the West negotiated away our mines, and that’s what saved the Surovikin line – a mile deep densely packed minefield.
Will Putin stop when Ukraine retreats to their new defense line, which just happens to be outside the areas he intends to conquer?
My guess is he will only stop if he has to, because why would RU
Don't forget to donate, Ukraine's cause is ours! Support Ukraine!
ADS
As you have probably noticed, we now have ads on the site. The ads and their placement are managed by Google, which also tries to optimize it automatically. We will let it run for a few weeks to see where it ends up. Some placements feel quite large, but it might get better.
We will then post a survey to hear what you think, if there are too many ads, if there are certain placements that are particularly annoying, etc. so we can make any adjustments after that.
Russian losses 2025-07-31
SLAVA UKRAINI
Sober report on the situation at the fronts! 👍
It is clear that we prefer not to bury ourselves in the fact that the Russians are advancing every day. Those who focus on the negative and no longer believe in victory will not win either.
(The worst thing I know is when the home crowd starts booing their own team when things are going badly for them, just when support is needed the most..)
For that reason, one should not bury their head in the sand and ignore reality.
I really hope that Europe’s leaders see what is happening. It is time to seriously consider how they want it to end, or the consequences of different outcomes.
Now that the tariff negotiations are over and the aftermath is soon fading, I hope they can refocus. Afraid it won’t happen, of course. Putin feels he has the wind at his back and Trump’s sanctions and tariffs against Russia, if they even happen, are unlikely to have any impact. Putin doesn’t take the threat seriously anyway.
Perhaps the two have spoken and agreed that it is a perfect way for Trump to pretend he is doing something, but it is just another way to give Putin more time? I hope not, but considering that Trump has hardly been able to do much more for Putin, one wonders.
Ukraine’s retreat
Delaying to gain time and at the same time minimize own losses is therefore the right way to go. This means that one is also forced to leave positions that are actually advantageous. (Furthermore, I wonder if drones make the advantage of the terrain less decisive.)
Defense line
Previously, despite it being relatively easy to predict the Russians’ advance, it has still been difficult to build sufficiently strong defense lines. When Avdiivka fell, for example, it was believed that they would have had time to build new lines just outside, but the Russians had no major problems continuing to advance.
Here too, I believe drones are a major problem. Proper defense lines require excavators and both sides are hunting them with drones.
When Ukraine went on the offensive in the summer of 2023, they had to try to pass Russian defense lines that they had almost a year to prepare for. We laughed at dragon’s teeth, etc. but together with numerous mines, it becomes difficult to breach. Moreover, defenses must be designed differently today when drones can easily reach even into the fortifications.
Setting up new defense lines where they do, I believe, is primarily because this time they want to both place it far back so that drones have difficulty reaching it while they build, but also to have the time to do it properly.
There may also be a consideration that by building the new defense line inside the border that Putin claims to have the right to, if the Russians really reach the border and then continue, there will be no doubt that they will not be satisfied until they have taken over all of Ukraine. Putin’s lies will then be even more apparent.
Many seem to think that perhaps the best thing would be to give Putin what he wants so we can have peace. For example, Trump seemed satisfied with letting Putin have the four oblasts and there are probably more than him.
It has been a while since we saw any surveys from Ukraine but it has been shown that even a small part of the population can consider giving up land for peace, that share will likely grow the longer the war lasts if they believe it will bring peace.
If it becomes obvious to everyone that Putin will not stop the war until someone stops him, and that Ukraine risks total annihilation, it sends a clear signal, both to the domestic population and to the rest of the world.
We have already understood this, but it doesn’t seem to quite sink in for all those who say they “Stand with Ukraine as long as needed”.
However, if the Russians stop at the Donbass border and want to negotiate peace (and peace is achieved), the defense lines will still be needed in the future when the Russians make their next attempt to conquer Ukraine.
Sober analysis that I believe is accurate. The Russian devils may have a war economy and it is starting to encounter major problems, and Ukraine probably sees opportunities in holding out long enough for it to collapse.
Some part about China is probably underestimated – they account for 92% of RU drones.
Yes – defense lines against drones and fab are less formidable 👍
Yesterday I posted tomorrow’s post, ahead.
Great to see that you think the same as me about Putin and ceasefire 👍👍👍

That Ukraine has managed to disrupt the enemy’s supply lines while maintaining its own is not just a tactical success, it is a strategic turning point. This asymmetric superiority demonstrates that sound internal processes, effective coordination, and a strong will to defend prevail over numerical superiority and brutality every time.
Many Western “experts” (except for Johan with the crystal ball) early on dismissed Sumy. Why? Because ryzZen still analyzes wars as if we were in 1943, only seeing frontlines, artillery, and ground advances. They overlook what is happening in the air, in the supply chain, in logistics, and in the will to defend one’s own country.
At the same time, we face an enemy that continues to throw people into meat grinders. This does not indicate strength, but strategic incompetence. Their leadership, guided by a puppet who refuses to see reality, commands an army lacking tactical mobility, failing to learn from its mistakes or understand the logic of the modern battlefield.
In a war where drones, sabotage, and supply chain warfare are crucial, victory goes to those who grasp networks, endurance, and innovation. Ukraine does. ryzZland does not.
Agree, but unfortunately, it happens that quantity wins over quality.
We must do more to ensure that it does not happen.
Both Napoleon and Hitler experienced that it was rather long distances and “General Winter” that decided the attempts to take Moscow, rather than what the Russian army achieved.
But this dilemma can actually go both ways.
Now it is Russia that has to suffer from this fact.

Trump – tariffs
Trump is using his tariffs to blackmail countries into doing what he wants.
“Donald Trump appears to exclude a trade agreement with Canada after the country announced that it will recognize the state of Palestine.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Wednesday evening, Swedish time, that the country plans to recognize Palestine when the UN General Assembly opens in September.
“It will make it very difficult for us to reach a trade agreement with them,” Donald Trump writes on Truth Social.”
https://omni.se/trump-inget-handelsavtal-om-kanada-erkanner-palestina/a/0V1xW6
Another example:
“US President Donald Trump has signed several new presidential decrees on tariffs. Among other things, US tariffs on Brazilian imports will be raised to 50 percent from the current level of 10 percent.
Trump has previously threatened Brazil with high tariffs if the country does not drop the legal proceedings against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who is accused of an attempted coup.”
https://omni.se/trump-chockhojer-brasilientullar/a/8qyKRx
Happy that he didn’t threaten to raise tariffs against the EU to 75% if we don’t stop helping Ukraine, but that may come in the end.
Just like Putin, he doesn’t seem to care about existing agreements.
Israel – Palestine
“The Swedish government wants to freeze the EU’s trade agreement with Israel to increase pressure on the Israeli government to allow more aid shipments to Gaza.
The demand is made by, among others, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, who writes on X that “the situation in Gaza is completely terrible” and that Israel is not living up to its agreements.”
https://omni.se/regeringen-eu-bor-frysa-handeln-med-israel/a/alVEbA
Clearly they see Gaza as Israeli and intend to take it over completely. If they saw a different future, a Palestinian state wouldn’t upset them so much.
“Israeli Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana does not like that France and the UK have announced that they may recognize the state of Palestine,” writes the Jerusalem Post.
“If they want a Palestinian state, they can establish one in London or Paris,” he says in a speech during a conference in Geneva.”
https://omni.se/israel-uppratta-palestinsk-stat-i-paris-eller-london/a/8qyodQ
A Palestinian state with connections to Iran does not promote long-term peace.
Israel must receive help from Arab countries to clear out Hamas, Hezbollah, and to build a peaceful Palestine.
No one should have any connection to Iran.
But I don’t see the connection to that when it comes to accepting Palestine as a separate state?
Time for us to listen to Zelenskyy.

“Trump says Medvedev entering ‘dangerous territory’ after US-Russia war threat
U.S. President Donald Trump on July 31 warned former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to “watch his words,” accusing him of crossing a line with increasingly inflammatory rhetoric.
“Let’s keep it that way, and tell Medvedev, the failed former president of Russia, who thinks he’s still president, to watch his words,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “He’s entering very dangerous territory.”
“Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war,” said Medvedev, currently deputy chair of Russia’s Security Council. “Not between Russia and Ukraine, but with his own country.””
Now we have a real port expert here who might be able to help with information.
Just a short distance outside the Kamchatka Peninsula, an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 on the Richter scale occurred. The nearest Russian port is Petropavlovsk.
Now the question is whether the port itself could have survived. Or rather, what kind of damage can we expect.
Since the port is the only port the Russians have for their nuclear submarines in the Pacific Ocean, the question becomes quite interesting. And the fact that Russia has now imposed a total information blockade on the incident makes one very curious.
Since the Russians have completely sealed off the information, this is definitely a topic worth discussing here.
Is it even possible to use the port for a long time? How does this affect Russia’s submarine fleet? If the submarines are in port or in dry dock, shouldn’t an earthquake and potential tsunami cause a lot of damage? Or worse, if the submarines were on a mission, can they even return to port?
And let’s not forget that both Putin and Trump must consider religious groups. Groups that could easily see this as a sign from God.
That is interesting, but of course also difficult to assess. Hopefully some information will leak out.
I am not a harbor expert, but a summer cottage owner in an old fishing village.
When building stone boxes of timber, it is important to fill them with stones all the way up even though maybe a third would be enough for the weight to press the stone box down to the bottom.
(In the past, the stone boxes were built in the winters and then they were allowed to sink in place until spring when the ice melted, slowly but cleverly. Nowadays, concrete is becoming more common.)
It is also important to cover the stone boxes with so-called ice boards on the outside. The logs used to build the stone boxes are not tightly packed like in a log cabin but have air between them to reduce weight (and I guess buoyancy).
It is important not to leave any air in the stone box because of the ice. In the autumns when the low pressures come, the water rises, if it then freezes, it may be enough to get an ice block a couple of decimeters inside the stone boxes to risk destroying the entire pier or boathouse that the stone boxes are the base of.
When the sea level rises, it provides a high lifting force, if it happens at the same time as severe weather and a storm surge, the ice block can simply break the stone box from the inside, or less severely, the planks etc. covering it can be knocked off.
If you have been careless with the ice boards, the ice outside the stone box can attach to the cavities formed between the log and the stone. Then the surrounding ice can lift and destroy instead. Ice outside can of course cause trouble anyway if it hits against the pier, and if it does, it is easier to replace ice boards than logs so they also protect against that.
If you have been careless with both filling with stones and ice boards, the ice inside the stone box and the ice outside can become a unified unit and suddenly we have doubled the lifting forces.
The forces of the sea acting on ice also apply to ships, of course.
When it comes to tsunamis, there is often talk about the wave they create, but at the same time there is usually a temporary increase in the total water level.
Both together should be devastating. Especially perhaps submarines, especially in a rock cavern if the ceiling height is not sufficient.
I am completely convinced that there has been damage, but how serious it is can only be guessed.
Just the fact that there is complete silence about an earthquake that occurred just a few miles from the port gives some familiar “Chernobyl vibes,” so to speak.
If Russia’s submarine fleet in the Pacific Ocean were to be disabled.
It could have significantly greater geopolitical effects than Operation Spider Web.
Siberia is much more strategically important than Greenland could ever be.
Especially when it comes to a Northeast Passage in the future.
Yes, you are right. Let’s see if there will be any statement in the end or if they will continue to keep silent.
I guess that the USA sooner or later will draw conclusions due to decreased activity.
Is probably a protected harbor as it is probably low and there is a flat terminal behind it 😀
Read 3m high wave that swept in and it should have caused damage.
The submarines, who knows, would be fun if they are lying broken in the harbor basin.
should have been considerable damage 👍
It would be interesting if elevated radiation levels were to be found in the area.
Then we will know how it has progressed.

Interesting. He emphasizes above all the likelihood of damage to the port. The only port for the nuclear-carrying submarines in the Pacific Ocean.
Normally, the submarines should be out at sea, right!?
If anyone was in port when the earthquake occurred, they should have gone out to sea. The question, however, is about the warning time and preparedness. Does anyone know the warning time (if they were on alert)? Russia is hardly known for being well-functioning. So if any ship was there, it probably stayed put.
A note: The point of the report seemed to me to be that if the port is destroyed, the capability of the entire weapon system is at risk – nuclear deterrence.
I heard that the epicenter was about 67 nautical miles from the base.
That would be around 12-13 regular miles.
There couldn’t have been much of a warning in that case.
Maybe 10-15 minutes?
That’s about the time it takes to make a pizza.
Both are worth seeing (or rather, worth listening to).👍
Millions of people have been reached by the news that large amounts of fish in the Norwegian river Nitelva have died and are floating around. Which turns out to be directly incorrect. Now the suspicion is growing that this is all about a Russian influence operation to create unrest, a bit like the talk about unguarded water towers I think.
Yes, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was the Russians. Hope it had minimal effect.
The talk about unguarded water towers I think is good so that it gets addressed.
A few years ago, someone broke into the area near our water treatment plant, which was only discovered the morning after. Protected only by a few meters of fence and a gate, and apparently not even alarmed.
Furthermore, it is located in a remote area.
Once inside the area, it was then quite easy to access the outgoing water supply for the whole city, for anyone who would want to poison it.
Don’t touch our fish Putin 😡😡
Wondering if the idea is to first release some fake warnings, then actually poison and then no one believes it. 😱

Wesley touched on it yesterday but Gaza seems to be able to get a solution everyone can live with.
Hamas out, MENA handles security, residents become free, and Israel backs down completely.
All major players are on board with this now.
It remains for Israel to join in – haven’t heard anything.
This is bad for Russia so now the PROOF will come for those who have consciously or unconsciously driven the Russian narrative.
This solution is the best possible according to Palestinians, other MENA countries, and the EU.
It’s enough for me to be able to rejoice with the civilians down there who have been used as pawns for far too long 👍
Sounds like a plan.
I suspect that the far-right extremists in Israel will not let Netanyahu agree to it. They have probably set out to destroy Israel. Without their support, Netanyahu is out, just like Putin, he will keep going full throttle.
Furthermore, what has happened in Palestine risks being largely proven.
If the USA, and perhaps influential Jews/Israelis in the USA and the rest of the world, apply strong pressure, maybe he will still feel compelled to back down.
Israel is facing harsh criticism from all sides and has probably lost its reputation among many, and the longer it continues, the worse it gets.
There will be enough recognition in front of Israel – recognized as a nation by many countries, for example.
Many Israelis are probably tired of this too.
This will go through 👍

Many are waving the carrots now. Now it is also required that Hamas accepts to hand over power, which the media has not understood yet.
They probably see the hostages as their lifeline. If they were to just hand them over, there is nothing to stop Israel from wiping them out completely.
It will be difficult to reach a peace agreement that both parties can accept. HAMAS probably just wants to survive now, and Israel preferably wants to wipe them out (and all of Palestine it seems).
The most important thing in the first step, as I see it, is to stop the killing of civilians and prevent a famine catastrophe.
Wanting to get the hostages back and not have Hamas as neighbors is fully understandable. Israel has about 2 million Muslims living peacefully within its borders. Wanting to harm peaceful Palestinians is just Hamas propaganda.
It’s time for the Arabs to address the problems.
Completely understandable that they want to get rid of HAMAS. I would be happy to see them disappear.
But the idea that the civilian population is not suffering is Israeli propaganda.
Do you really think that everyone who sticks their neck out and announces that they intend to approve Palestine as their own state, despite Trump and the USA being against it, would do so because they have been deceived by AI videos that HAMAS has put together?
It is important to see the whole thing in a larger context, it is not Hamas that is being recognized. One way to make Hamas irrelevant is to emphasize support for Fatah.
The Fatah party is now taking the opportunity to issue an ultimatum to their enemies in Hamas to lay down their weapons to save the civilian population in Gaza.
Even the other Arab countries dislike Hamas and are afraid that Hamas will emerge in their countries.
That is why, among other reasons, Egypt refuses to let Palestinians in, as among them there will be Hamas supporters who are an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood, which won the election in Egypt but was banned after a military coup.
The same goes for many other Arab countries, Kuwait is the Arab country that has deported the most Palestinians. Lebanon wants to expel Hezbollah.
All Arab countries want to get rid of Hamas, Hezbollah, the Muslim Brotherhood, and Iran’s influence. Now it is up to the Palestinians in Gaza to choose, continued war or a two-state solution where they are demilitarized and Israel receives security guarantees.
Hamas is ready to let the population of Gaza die to avoid capture, and Israel is ready to kill the population of Gaza to eradicate Hamas.
So, here are several losers. The population of Gaza dies, Hamas dies or is captured, Israel is labeled as genocidal, and anti-Semitism gets a boost.
Israel gets a half victory since Hamas is gone, Hamas gets a half victory (posthumously) as world opinion turns against Israel.
Conditioning the recognition of a Palestinian state on Hamas surrendering is good, but I doubt they will give up as long as there are hostages remaining, and I also consider the population of Gaza as hostages.
The alternative if Hamas does not give up is for the Arab League to send in forces and disarm Hamas.
Replied far above MXT:
Some part” about China is probably underestimated – they account for 92% of RU drone weapons.
Yes – defense lines against drones and factories are less formidable 👍
Yesterday I posted tomorrow’s post, ahead.
Nice to see that you think the same as me about Putin and ceasefire 👍👍👍
Well, drones are still a low-cost product. Apart from drones and golf carts and some electronics, we haven’t really seen that much Chinese involvement in the war, have we?
Then who knows if China really helps them by donating the stuff or if they do like Trump and just sell to the Russians. 😄
North Korea is probably the one who has helped the most with the slightly more expensive items like artillery ammunition and artillery pieces, etc.
MXT’s comment is good, as well as a good analysis from Johan of course.
New attacks during the day against Kamyanske according to the evening report:
“The aggressor attacked twice towards Orikhiv – the occupiers attempted to advance in the areas around the inhabited areas of Kamjanske and Mali Shcherbaky.”
Regarding: “You know, since you have read these daily updates, that Ukraine has built a defense line in an unnatural arc outside Donetsk Oblast.”
Then, what do the rear fall-back lines look like? Are there natural terrain obstacles? Is it built around dominant terrain? Often, borders are natural fortifications – that’s how borders have come into existence. If it’s not natural terrain obstacles lying outside the ancient established oblast borders, then it’s a problem.
I am 99.999% sure that the new defense line follows the border.
It is my strong opinion that Ukraine has already realized that it is to that point Trump will let Putin go, and because they are pragmatic, they built the line outside.
Started construction in March and should be well built.

I have to admit that I am a bit uplifted by the fact that MENA has agreed to crack down on Hamas and Hezbollah, and that the civilians in Gaza will soon be out of the wilderness 👍
This has been going on for far too long.
Very positive, but at the same time I just heard that Sweden wants to initiate a trade boycott against Israel, isn’t that a bit like taking sides with Hamas? What have I missed?
Sweden cannot initiate any boycott on its own, we are bound by what the EU decides. The government is giving in to the opposition and the media, hoping that the issue will disappear from the agenda.
You can safely continue to buy Jaffa oranges in the future.
