That Russia would roll in towards Kiev and immediately get stuck feels too stupid even for Putin.
In some way, they must have secured a reasonable chance of victory through tactical nuclear weapons, early infiltration of saboteurs (too late) or diversion so that to defend Kiev they leave the east of the Dnieper weak.
My money is on the east of the Dnieper being the target and then Russia stops and asks for peace in our time.
Taking all of Ukraine is not possible but dumber things have probably been attempted.
Back down now, nothing has been achieved except the annexation of Belarus which is too little.
