Massive attack on the Moscow region, Wildberries hit – Russian losses

Ukraine carried out a massive drone attack on the Moscow region during the night. Moscow’s mayor reports that 197 drones were shot down and that the entire attack involved 600 drones. One of Wildberries’ warehouses is said to have been hit according to Russian media. There was also a fire at an aluminum factory and a fire broke out in the city of Lyubertsy just outside Moscow’s city limits, but it is not clear what is burning. A transformer station was damaged in the city of Elektrostal. Russian air defense, in its attempts to stop the attack, reportedly hit a residential building which caught fire. Russian losses

Russian losses continue to remain at a high level. Not the highest in the war but still high. We have to go back all the way to May to find a day with fewer than 1000 KWIA. Once again, we also have several air defense and special equipment in addition to numerous artillery systems and vehicles for logistics, etc.

Ukrainian General Staff morning report

Glory to Ukraine!

The 1,637th day of the Russian Federation’s large-scale armed aggression against Ukraine has begun.

A total of 244 combat engagements were recorded during the past day.

Yesterday, the enemy carried out 91 air strikes, dropping 306 guided aerial bombs. In addition, the attackers used 11,138 kamikaze drones and conducted 3,310 shellings against communities and our troops’ positions, including 50 with rocket artillery.

The communities of Korenok, Neskuchne, Bachivsk, Sopych, Ulanove, Buniakyne, Volfyne, Hirky, Rohizne, Kucherivka, and Hutko-Ozhynka in the Sumy region were subjected to hostile artillery fire. The enemy also carried out an air strike on the area around Tovstodubove.

During the past day, the defense forces’ air force, missile units, and artillery struck two command posts, two areas with concentrations of enemy personnel, two artillery systems, one air defense system, and five command posts for unmanned aerial vehicles.

On the Northern Slobozhansk and Kursk sectors, our defenders repelled 17 enemy attacks during the past day. Meanwhile, the attacker carried out three air strikes, dropped nine aerial bombs, and conducted 64 shellings against our troops’ positions and communities, including nine with rocket artillery.

On the Southern Slobozhansk sector, Ukrainian units repelled seven enemy attacks. The attackers attempted to advance in the area around Vovtjansk and in the direction of Botjkove, Lyman, Izbytske, Nesterne, and Volokhivka.

On the Kupyansk sector, the enemy conducted five offensive attacks towards Radkivka and Petropavlivka.

Attempts to break through our defensive lines were repelled on the Lyman sector, where occupation forces carried out two attacks in the areas around Zaritjne and Novoselivka.

On the Sloviansk sector, the enemy conducted 17 assault attempts in the areas around Riznykivka, Kryva Luka, and Zakitne as well as in the direction of Rai-Oleksandrivka and Mykolajivka.

On the Kramatorsk sector, the Russian attackers carried out five offensive attacks in the area around Minkivka and towards Jurkivka.

On the Kostiantynivka sector, 27 attacks were recorded. The attackers attempted assaults in the areas around Kostiantynivka, Ivanopillia, Illinivka, Novoselivka, Sofiivka, and Rusyn Jar, as well as towards Vilne, Kutjeriv Jar, and Novopavlivka.

On the Pokrovsk sector, the enemy conducted 34 attacks. Occupation forces tried to advance in the areas around Kotlyne, Udatjne, Molodetske, and Novomykolajivka, as well as towards Novyj Donbas, Hannivka, Shevchenko, Bilytske, Novohrishyne, Myrne, Vasylivka, Serhiivka, Svitlé, and Filiia.

On the Oleksandrivka sector, the attackers carried out an attack towards Nove Zaporizhzhia.

On the Huliaipole sector, occupation forces attacked our defenders’ positions 11 times. The enemy attempted to advance towards Rivne, Vozdvyzhivka, Tsvitkove, Hirke, and Tiarivne, as well as in the area around Zaliznytjne.

On the Orikhiv sector, our defenders stopped four enemy attempts to advance towards Prymorske and Lukjanivske, as well as in the area around Plavni.

On the Dnipro sector, a combat engagement with the enemy took place.

On the Volyn and Polissia sectors, no signs of the enemy forming offensive strike groups have been observed.

In total, the Russian attackers’ losses during the past day amounted to 1,210 personnel. In addition, two tanks, seven armored fighting vehicles, 55 artillery systems, three multiple launch rocket systems, five air defense systems, 19 ground-based missile systems, 1,962 unmanned aerial vehicles, one heavy flamethrower system, 443 vehicles, and seven units of special equipment were neutralized.

    Pehr posted this in yesterday’s thread, but I’m repeating it in case not everyone is following it.
    I think they have a point here; they stand for the EU’s border defense against Russia and should probably get more help. Both financially and by us placing more troops and equipment in the border countries. Or why not hold rotating exercises there?

    USD against the ruble is now at 85.2, and we have to go back to March 2025 to find the same level. The rise has been quite rapid since May this year when it was at 71.

    Maybe it doesn’t say much, but it could be interesting to keep an eye on it going forward, if it continues on the same track.

    I get the distinct feeling that the EU is starting to be despised.

    It went well before we faced geographical escalation.

    Ukraine bought us time but our MID has slowed the arms race, politicians and others have done too little.

    We can bridge that with shooters who are slaughtered but many countries are not politically ready for such a decision – those who try also get a government crisis immediately because we have not prepared the citizens on why they should die – very little patriotism in my feeds or a lesson on why the Balts are worth our friendship.

    The USA burned through the “world’s largest/most expensive” defense force in a few months – Trump seems to be doing what he should.

    The problem may not be that Sweden becomes Russian but that our friends in bad geographical locations get eaten up – those who openly chose us when the choice had to be made.

    China-Iran-NK-RU have been in war economy and preparing for war for a long time.

    Then with a bit of luck we only get a new cold war, then we have to be satisfied.

    A drone has exploded at a bus stop used by staff at the Russian-occupied nuclear power plant in Ukrainian Zaporizhzhia. This is reported by the UN’s atomic energy agency IAEA according to Reuters. One person has been killed and several injured, three of them seriously. The head of the nuclear power plant describes the attack as “the worst so far,” according to IAEA. In May this year, Russia accused Ukraine of attacking the nuclear power plant with a drone, something Ukraine denied, according to AP. The infrastructure around the power plant has also been damaged in previous fighting. Zaporizhzhia is Europe’s largest nuclear power plant and has been occupied by Russia since the beginning of the war.

    Germany rejects Kremlin threats, vows continued military support for Ukraine

    The German government has responded to renewed threats from the Kremlin directed at countries supporting Ukraine militarily. A spokesperson for the German Foreign Ministry said on Monday, August 17, that such threats are nothing new. “We take note of them and will not allow ourselves to be intimidated,” she emphasized during a press conference. She added that Berlin would not be deterred from supporting Ukraine.

As recently as a couple of weeks ago, the Russian bastards issued new threats that directly affect Sweden in response to Swedish authorities acting around ships in the Baltic Sea, and as a reaction to the West’s sanctions against the Russian shadow fleet. Among other things, they sent several warships and missile-carrying frigates to the Baltic Sea near Swedish waters.

    The recent nightly Russian attacks on Ukraine have been followed by the same morning message from the Ukrainian army: no missiles were shot down.

    The civilian casualties in July were counted at least 437. Not since the first months of the war in 2022 have so many been killed.

    The missile attacks continue in August to hit Ukraine hard, while the country’s president Volodymyr Zelensky repeatedly appeals for air defense deliveries from the US and Europe.

    ”Heartbreaking sight”

    Patriot is one of the few weapons systems that can shoot down ballistic missiles. But there is a global shortage of the American air defense missiles, largely because they have been fired extensively during the Iran war.

    In Ukraine, the stockpiles are now virtually empty, reports CNN, which has visited a Ukrainian air defense unit.

    The chief engineer tells the American channel that he has not seen a single Patriot missile fired in six weeks. The ballistic missiles just fly past the air defenses, onward towards civilians, he explains.

    – It is truly a heartbreaking sight when you have the equipment, but still do not have the ability to shoot down any missile, says Dmytro, who for security reasons does not want to disclose his last name.

    Complicated winter ahead

    Johan Huovinen, lieutenant colonel and military instructor at the Swedish Defence University, notes that Ukraine has stopped reporting downed missiles.

    – For about a week now, they only report engaged drones. It is probably likely that they have very limited resources to handle especially ballistic missiles.

    Zelensky has stated that Ukraine needs five percent of the US’s Patriot stockpile to manage the winter, but currently only has one percent.

    – It will be very complicated. This winter will of course be ten times worse than the last one, says Johan Huovinen.

    Without air defense missiles, it is open season for Russia to strike critical infrastructure such as heating and power plants, he continues.
    – I was in Ukraine in February and April and there are power plants everywhere that supply all grocery stores, for example. Last year they still managed to ration energy, but it will probably be much harder to solve this winter.”

      Bureaucracy and an example of something that the EU should NOT be involved in, in my opinion.
      But we have the representatives we deserve.
      The EU’s new packaging regulation, PPWR (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation), came fully into effect on August 12, 2026. The purpose is to reduce packaging waste, and the regulation has created enormous problems for e-commerce retailers and small businesses.
      PPWR is an EU regulation and has the same rules for how packaging should be designed. However, the extended producer responsibility (EPR) for managing the waste is still entirely national.
      If you are a Swedish company sending packages to customers in another country within the Union, you must register and report your packaging data in each individual country. There is currently no common EU register.

    Good proposal from the South Korean conservative party. Unfortunately, the proposal is unlikely to win as the current administration is afraid of upsetting the neighbor to the north, according to the post.
    ** Rep. Yu Yong-weon, a legislator from the conservative People Power Party, said that South Korea should consider sending the Cheongung-II air defense system to war-torn Ukraine.

    Yu said at a press conference in the National Assembly on Tuesday that the deployment of the South Korean-made interception system aimed at countering aircraft, drones, and missiles would not violate South Korea’s principle of not sending lethal weapons to the country that has been at war with Russia for years.

    Yu’s proposal came after Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy last week asked South Korea for support in the form of an air defense system to counter the growing presence of North Korean armed forces fighting alongside Russia.

    “The air defense system that Ukraine has requested is not a weapon to attack an enemy, but defensive equipment to protect its people and infrastructure from missile and drone attacks,” Yu said.

    He added that considering the civilian losses in Ukraine due to the ongoing conflict, it would be in accordance with humanitarian principles to send the surface-to-air missile defense system to Ukraine.

    Zelenskyy had also suggested that Kyiv could assist Seoul with drone technology in return.

    Yu said that deploying Cheongung-II in Ukraine would not only help the country protect itself against air attacks but could also “enable South Korea to combat the growing threat of short-range missiles from North Korea” through information gathered from the deployment.

    “I hereby urge South Korea to consider sending an air defense system to Ukraine in pursuit of national security and national benefit,” Yu said.

    “Peace will not be guaranteed if we turn a blind eye to the suffering of our allies.”
