  1. Off-Topic, EU + India

India is perhaps a slightly better alternative than China, but they stand behind Russia and should rather be sanctioned as long as they trade oil and other goods with them.

“EU and India have agreed on a free trade agreement, says India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to AP.

The agreement has been negotiated for two decades and is one of the largest ever, as it creates a market of two billion people.

It has come to be called “the mother of all trade agreements,” writes TT.

The details are still unknown, but are expected to be announced during the day when European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costareser are in India for a summit.”

  2. Off-Topic, Iran

“The London-based Persian TV channel Iran International promises to show “the truth about the protests in Iran,” writes AFP. The channel claims to have received images, videos, and testimonies from thousands of Iranians who were present during the extensive protests earlier in January, which were brutally suppressed by the regime.

    – It’s honestly terrible. At first, I couldn’t believe it. I thought maybe the images were created with AI, says journalist Farnoosh Faraji who fled Iran in 2012.

The channel reported over the weekend that they have information that over 36,000 people were killed during the protests. The human rights group HRANA claims to have confirmed around 6,000 deaths so far, while over 17,000 suspected cases are under investigation.”

    1. “New video material from the extensive protests in Iran shows snipers on rooftops, surveillance cameras being destroyed, and dead bodies stacked in piles at a hospital. This is reported by the BBC, which has verified the material as authentic.

The material is said to have been filmed on the 8th and 9th of January, when the protests against the regime were most intense. Iran’s security forces responded very brutally, while the internet was down across the country. Reports on the number of dead vary from around 6,000 to as many as 30,000 people.”

    2. When it comes to the USA, it doesn’t seem like there will be any intervention, it seems like Iran will bribe Trump with a deal instead.

“The American aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln arrived in the Middle East on Monday, greatly enhancing the US military capability in the region, writes AFP.

The US Central Command Centcom states in a statement that the ship is there to “promote regional security and stability.”

In an interview with Axios, President Donald Trump says that he has a “great armada” near Iran. USS Abraham Lincoln was ordered to the Middle East due to the extensive protests in Iran, which were violently suppressed by the regime.

The American attack that Trump hinted at several times did not materialize, and now the president states that Iran wants a deal with the USA.

      – They have reached out on several occasions.”

      1. Let’s see now if there will be any attack at all, or if Trump has managed to secure himself a princely bribe from the mullahs.

Trump is not known for harboring any greater empathy for the population either at home or elsewhere, so the fact that up to 30,000 Iranian civilians have been killed by the regime is just one reason for Trump to raise the price.

  3. Off-Topic, electricity prices 😱

“Electricity prices are expected to rise between 37–312 percent on an annual basis in Sweden’s four electricity price areas during the first quarter. This is evident from the new forecast by the electricity company Bixia, as reported by DI.

The culprit is the classic combination of cold weather and a lack of wind, with a touch of less water in the reservoirs of hydroelectric power plants.

    – The average prices for January are likely to be the highest since the electricity price crisis in 2022, says Bixia analyst Johan Sigvardsson.

The spot price is expected to be highest in the electricity price area SE4, while SE1 and SE2 are predicted to see the highest percentage increase of around 300 percent.”

    1. Hm, it turned out as I suspected that the new Aurora line between Sweden and Finland raises the prices in northern Sweden when it’s cold and windless.

Here in Finland, we have very high prices right now, we export, or actually transmit Swedish energy to the Baltics, and import their electricity prices. The same goes for northern Sweden. Sweden exports to Finland, and because the hydropower cannot run at full capacity, a higher price is imported back to Sweden.

  4. One wonders what Rutte is really after? Does he want Europe to be dependent on the USA and abandon the idea of creating its own strong defense? Of course, we can manage without the USA if we decide to do so.

He may be afraid of losing his job if NATO ceases to exist because the EU becomes independent from the USA and creates its own strong defense.

“Europe can’t defend itself without the US, NATO’s Rutte warns
The EU should stop dreaming of creating a European pillar for NATO and continue to build ties with the U.S. despite Trump, the alliance secretary-general said.”
    https://www.politico.eu/article/europe-defense-nato-mark-rutte-us-politics-threats-gdp/

      1. It might be so.

I believe that Europe would probably have a pretty good ability to defend itself, but logistics would probably be a problem, as well as intelligence.

    1. Ukraine and Rutte have suddenly become supporters of the USA.

      Europe fell silent about Ukraine.

Europe is providing flights for Iran’s extermination on behalf of the USA.

    1. Rutte and Macron were up to some “monkey-business” when the Netherlands were about to order new submarines. Thyssen Krupp appealed, but not Saab. However, the Saab CEO was very disappointed afterwards. Rutte and Macron seem to be cut from the same cloth and do not inspire any confidence – at least not in me.

  6. The Russians are throwing in everything they have now it seems – a final all in on red before Trump stops everything and declares peace in our time?

Donbass is going up in smoke and Zelensky is going up in smoke but hard to see that it will be anything else.

    1. ‼️‼️🚀 Updates on Tomahawk missiles:

🇺🇸🇺🇦🚀 How quiet pressure is unfolding over supplying Ukraine with America’s longest-range missiles — Kyiv Post.

At the center of this initiative is Dan Rice, President of the American University in Kyiv and former special adviser to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

This week, Rice held a face-to-face meeting with U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, which Rice described as a “broad and comprehensive discussion” covering both the war and his personal experience in Ukraine.

Rice, who previously played a significant behind-the-scenes role in securing U.S. approval for the transfer of cluster munitions and ATACMS ballistic missiles to Ukraine, now argues that the time has come for a far bolder step: transferring a small, undisclosed number of ground-launched Tomahawk cruise missiles, capable of striking deep inside Russian territory.

What he has disclosed is particularly notable: Rice directly asked Hegseth to provide Tomahawks even in a “limited, undisclosed quantity.” According to Rice, he is making the same request to every relevant official he meets in Washington.

    2. 🚨 BREAKING NEWS: Sen. Lindsey Graham has called for the United States to “go all in” by arming Ukraine with deadly ‘Tomahawk cruise missiles’ to strike deep inside Russian territory if Putin rejects the peace deal.

What’s your thoughts on this? 🤔

  7. I see that you are starting to worry about the electricity price up there in SE2 MXT.

The monthly average is starting to get quite high now in SE3, so I saw, so then one must rejoice that SE4 has it even worse.

Don’t we also have some new type of pricing that rolled out in 2025 that would make everything more expensive in the usual manner on top of a high spot price.

    1. Minus degrees in my fishing cabin. The pipes are frozen. The refrigerator was working, which was lucky. Had to put my frozen feet in the refrigerator to thaw them. Power outage 4.🥶

  8. I believe that Israel wants a new government in Iran and then they will get it.

The current pause is because they are concerned about Iran’s retaliation and need to have enough in place.

The citizens of Iran will probably take care of the ground invasion themselves.

    1. Most non-terrorist states probably would like to see a new regime in Iran. The USA is the one with the power to force a change.

It is now up to Trump to show what means more, a safer Middle East or a “deal”.

If he manages to strike a deal where the mullahs give up power without him needing to bomb, it would be a gold star for Trump, but I find it hard to see how that would succeed.

I believe the risk is greater that he will make a deal, and the mullahs will remain and continue to oppress their own population as long as they leave Israel alone.

Fourteen countries around the North Sea and the Baltic Sea make a joint statement: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/the-growing-risks-to-maritime-safety/the-growing-risks-to-maritime-safety

They say that GPS disturbances come from Russia and list a number of rules that ships must follow when moving in the vicinity, such as having proper documentation on board, only being flagged in one state, all transfers between ships must be notified in advance to the state whose economic zone it is done in, etc. Ships flagged in multiple countries are considered stateless.

Johan No.1, I think Northern Europe (and France) rose from their chairs.

  10. Off-topic. EU’s integration: the world’s highest bridge tolls.

Some EU bigwig should intervene against meddlesome local politicians.

Congestion charges are used to reduce traffic. Bridges are built to increase traffic. The purpose of the Øresund Bridge is to connect Skåne and Denmark, to increase integration. Tolls counteract this. The result is that the Bridge is underutilized.

So, one thing is that the EU should not interfere in details, but when decisions counteract the purpose of an EU-funded (?) infrastructure project?

    1. It’s probably more about seeing an opportunity for tax collection?

In my mother’s area in Stockholm, a small sleepy residential area, everyone has been parking on the street for 50 years and it has worked excellently.

Some park in the driveway, so a bit mixed.

One dark night a few years ago, signs for paid parking suddenly appeared throughout the area.

Some lawyer appealed and won against the municipality – they were not allowed to introduce this and had to remove the signs.

Two months later, they put the signs back without any statements from any authority at all, and now everyone pays to park in the area.

If you don’t pay, the municipality will send you to the enforcement authority, and they don’t seem to care at all about the ruling that these fees were not allowed to be introduced.

There has been a small increase in cleared driveways, indeed, but it’s an obvious theft of citizens’ money.

Similar to when debt slaves in mines in developing countries have to buy food, electricity, and water at ten times the price that corresponds to their wages.

    2. I believe that the Municipality of Copenhagen is behind the high bridge tolls. It’s hard to digest a too high traffic load into Copenhagen. The traffic would simply jam up.
It’s also out of consideration for the ferries Helsingborg – Helsingør. These are good as a complement when the bridge has to close due to certain weather conditions or accidents. The ferries require a certain economic viability to operate the route.
