Read in DI that electricity companies are disconnecting customers from the power grid who cannot pay their bills.
-Isn’t that what social services are for, to help citizens in financial distress, how can disconnection even be an option?
-How the hell have we gotten here, this tops 1990s England where pensioners froze to death by the thousands at -3 degrees because at least they had electricity and gas but couldn’t afford to use too much.
Here it is -30 degrees and no heating at all, good luck surviving that…
-Homes without heating freeze and break during winter, so every individual disconnected from the power grid faces the additional cost of dealing with a frozen and damaged house.
If this is happening, as DI describes it, then we probably need to quickly start reallocating funds here because I consider heating to be a civic right, and if we have managed to totally crash electricity production in a few years so that we get a new underclass just because of that, then we need to make sure to catch those who fall through the cracks pretty quickly.
