Boat ownership was probably bigger back then and the same with holiday homes since newer generations prefer to travel, I tried googling but it didn’t work.

I have a rather anxious acquaintance who turned up the heat a bit in the summer cottage in December with the app when it got cold and got an electricity bill just under 20,000 SEK for December alone, direct electric heating yes.
Now I’m not one to complain since mine was only 15k and for the permanent house.

He probably set a temperature and then the heat didn’t go up in any room and the radiator was blowing at max?

Well, the UK has tax-free allowances for everyone including small businesses up to a threshold, it’s hard to get fairer than that and it benefits the poorest.
Apparently every quarterly bill came in January and you end up with a month’s salary in bills because of the huge electricity bill, including a decent tree pruning bill that came strangely late. You should feel that you are alive 👍
When I grew up, everyone (not everyone…) had a house, two cars, a sailboat, and a summer cottage. Those with slightly more daring parents went to Kos or Yugoslavia in the summer and ski holidays in the mountains were standard, and that was with parents who were teachers, worked in the municipality, or had fairly ordinary jobs.
Highly anecdotal but I have long felt that you get less and less for your money, although we didn’t have flat-screen TVs and ate less meat back then, admittedly.
