Yes, who doesn’t remember the Star Wars movies on VHS copies at a friend’s place and how it changed your life. How many times did you stand and look at the Star Wars figures in the toy store, you probably got a few for your birthday and Christmas. And then the friend who had both the ATAT, ATST, and the not-so-fun tie fighter.
The Lord of the Rings managed to recreate that feeling, and when the LOTR video games where you built up and ran around attacking with armies came out at the same time as the second movie (was it?), my brothers and I had one of our better Christmases, first the movie and then the holiday with the video game.
The only thing that has come close recently are the Disney series, not the Star Wars movies but The Mandalorian was really good.
The Lord of the Rings series on Amazon might take off, the first season was rather lukewarm. I am positive about series because you get more time and can build it up in a completely different way, but they have to stick to the references in a good way and manage the bridges to something new. The right director and team behind him are absolutely crucial.
