    Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to meet France’s Emmanuel Macron, Germany’s Friedrich Merz, and the United Kingdom’s Keir Starmer to discuss support for Ukraine on Sunday, reports The Guardian.

    The meeting will be held at the Prime Minister’s residence on Downing Street in London.

    This week, attacks between Ukraine and Russia have intensified. On Friday, Russian leader Vladimir Putin rejected Zelensky’s proposal for a face-to-face meeting.

    The US’s Donald Trump has said it would be good if Zelensky and Putin met, but also said that both sides must “compromise.” It was unclear on what.

    A good proposal, to use frozen Iranian assets for the countries affected, but why don’t we hear a word in the USA about using the frozen Russian assets and giving them to Ukraine?

    “The USA wants to use frozen Iranian assets to pay for the damages that the Gulf states have suffered during the ongoing war. This is stated by a source with insight to Reuters.

    The proposal is said to have been developed by the US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, whose staff is now investigating whether it is feasible. He is also said to have asked experts to prepare a cost estimate of the repair costs.

    The information comes at the same time as Mohsen Rezaei, advisor to Iran’s Supreme Leader, has stated that Iran demands that the USA release Iranian assets worth 24 billion dollars to end the war.

    The war between the USA and Iran has been going on for 100 days and no peace agreement is yet in sight. Due to the American bases in the neighboring countries around Iran, several Gulf states have been affected by attacks and war damages. In recent days, Iranian drones have hit targets in Kuwait.”

      The same reason as why people shuttle back and forth to Moscow and never ever to Kiev? The same reason as why they are received with a red carpet and there is a photo from that meeting in the Oval Office? The same reason as why they constantly talk about concessions as necessary, but then from the Ukrainian side?

      The frozen Russian assets are mainly in Europe and managed by the Belgian Euroclear.

      It is probably not possible to seize them just like that since all attempts will be legally contested. If the decision is then overturned by a court and the assets are returned, the volume of assets is so extensive that Euroclear and thus the banking systems in Europe would falter (not to mention Belgium).

      So it probably requires, for example, a ruling from some internationally recognized authority or a binding decision from the UN or consent from Russia in order to be able to “take” the assets. That is, a solid legal basis. Anything else would risk seriously damaging the financial systems.

      The proposal to use Iranian assets that have been frozen suffers from the same fundamental weakness. But there may still be openings if it concerns funds frozen in countries that have been attacked by Iran. There, one can argue a right to compensation to remedy the damages caused by Iran. And then one can of course hope that Iran is so weak and financially isolated that it does not matter if the assets are seized – after all, they have started a war to overthrow the regime, and then the seizures can be seen as part of the warfare.

      But in any case, the conditions are not quite the same as we have with Euroclear and the Russian assets.

        Yes, the frozen Russian assets in the USA are probably only around about 5 billion USD when it comes to money belonging to the Russian state (it is difficult to find any information regarding sanctioned private individuals).

        But it was not the amount that was interesting in this case, it is that there are discussions about seizing the Iranian assets, but not the Russian ones.

        The legal problems should also arise when it comes to Iran, especially since it was the USA that started that war?

          Yes, the legal issues are the same. But there are subjective and objective differences.

          If we start with the obvious, it is the level of the current administration in the USA. Inadequate is a mild word. That Bessent makes such statements about Iran is subjectively understandable (in the sense that we are probably by now used to constant chatter from there) but still, objectively speaking, there is probably no basis to actually seize funds and distribute them.

          The exception might possibly be assets available in a Gulf state that Iran has attacked – there is presumably a robust legal basis there.

          And then one can imagine that Bessent wants to seize these funds as part of the warfare against Iran, of course. An approach that in essence might be excused if the attack on Iran can be justified based on international law/public law.

          Objectively also a different situation than the Russia situation because neither Europe nor the USA is at war with Russia (yet).

      In both cases, it is a very small portion of the capital that is in the USA.
      Among others, Japan and India have a large share of frozen Iraqi assets, if I have understood correctly.
      Qatar is probably the only country among those affected that has a significant share of frozen Iranian assets?
      Frozen Russian assets are mainly in Europe, not least Belgium.
      The USA has stated that it wants to use frozen Russian assets to finance its possible involvement in providing security guarantees as well as the reconstruction of the countries after a peace agreement.

    Veritasium has released a really interesting and watchable video regarding GPS disruptions in Europe.

    It is not about the disruptions that are normally reported and that occur almost all the time, but about other shorter disruptions that have been observed, which have affected all of Europe and may possibly just be tests ahead of much more extensive disruptions.

    Along the way, you get a more detailed explanation of how GPS works and what problems the system has to handle. It is not quite as simple as triangulation, as it is often described.

    Several skyscrapers in Moscow have in recent weeks been equipped with a drone-combat version of the Pantsir air defense system, according to the independent Russian Agency.

      Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan declares himself the winner of the parliamentary election, reports Reuters.
      With just over 20 percent of the constituencies reporting election results, his party Civil Contract looks set to receive over 50 percent of the votes. Pashinyan’s challenger, billionaire Samvel Karapetyan’s party, appears to be getting just over 20 percent of the votes.
      Just under 2.5 million Armenians were able to vote in the election, which has been described as a test of the prime minister’s more pro-Western policies. Voter turnout was 59 percent, according to the country’s election commission.
      The Kremlin has been accused of attempting to influence the election through disinformation.

    It’s a bit strange how quickly there was a major fuel shortage down in Crimea.

    Could it be that RU adapted the situation after all the UA drone activity there and had all the supplies moved to Taganrog-Rostov?

    They pulled a Japan where 90% of the goods are in stores or in transit?

    In the long run, it should be the same for the brigades out at the fronts?

    Crimea has been exposed for a long time, so RU has had plenty of time to adapt – not entirely unlikely.

    So the question is not when they run out of supplies, but when the gas stations and stores run out.

    That the whole “flagship” and “guilt” is now broken – hats off to those behind this year’s campaign to claw it back.

    Noticed that the usual SD battery, who are the only ones who usually stick to traditions and spice things up with some general criticism of everything, mostly aimed at immigrants, hardly appeared at all in the feed. Neither did those to the right of them. After all, most people get their picture from social media nowadays.

    So, one takes back a very important issue for the nation – if we are ever to go to war, it is quite important that those who live in Sweden feel that the country is worth risking their lives for.

      Sweden has done well. But how much have private individuals collected? It would be interesting to know. I believe Sweden will reach a top position there as well.
      Highest praise to UK/PJ from me. But my absolute favorite is Karl Oskar Bolin. The most unvarnished minister we have had since elections were introduced on TV in 1960. He is himself, doesn’t put on airs, is blunt but does a great job. Honor to Karl Oskar!
      By the way, did you notice that the personal chemistry between our foreign minister and Marco Rubio was quite good? That has been understood from a number of statements Rubio has made about Sweden recently.

      The Norwegian self-righteousness is well known. The person who most personifies this is the Norwegian author Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson (Nobel Prize 1903). I don’t know the reason, but maybe it happens when Denmark downgraded Norway to a county.
      Norway’s history with royal names like Harald Hardrada, Erik Bloodaxe, or why not Sigurd the Bad, just to mention a few of these modest gentlemen.
      Norway only had its nature to be proud of. The self-righteousness came to light when the Oseberg ship was found and great authors that Norway mass-produced gave the Norwegians their self-esteem back.
      Norway’s waving of its flags is a good sign of this phenomenon.
      But in all honesty, Norway must open its wallet and share with Ukraine!!! Sending six useless F16 planes is not enough. Scandal.
