I worked a stint in a technical unit during COVID when everything internationally broke down and just kept going.
I came to the following –
-the technical feeders were 10% of the office, the rest had over time grown into a huge draining office that dealt with all sorts of things outside the core mission.
-the feeders were a necessary evil that was accepted.
-if you tried to get efficiency and production going by following the job description and focusing on the core mission, you also gave the large group of drainers more work.
-pretty quickly the large group of drainers started to slow everything down and make things difficult because they didn’t like having to work, I was annoying.
-absolutely no one reflected on the fact that the core mission was neglected but costs increased, everything was taxpayer money.
-big city and critical infrastructure that was urgently neglected.
The funniest thing was that everyone was extremely environmentally conscious but instead of maintaining so you wouldn’t have to build new, everything was neglected so you constantly have to build new and start new material flows which greatly increases CO2 emissions. Consultants also like new and as a politician you don’t win elections on maintenance of gray concrete – no environmental awareness at all thus but we had electric cars and electric bikes.

Mine was therefore in public sector, sorry if I was unclear.

There is a lot of interesting discussion from the left of center right now on social media and in the media. Everything from banks making too high profits to companies should distribute profits to employees and that everyone would feel better with shorter working hours (ok, that might actually be true). Then I also read that they themselves would exist without the millionaires but that the millionaires would not exist without them.
What they probably miss is that the people who started a company with one employee and made it a large employer probably worked themselves to death in that process and never slept.
Then it seems these left-of-center people who are now driving the debate need a host body to survive because I read nowhere about how they want to make it easier to start their own companies or start their own business. Only how they will get more money from others or work less and get the same money (someone else pays) and these are adults. Show me that I am wrong and I will change my mind immediately.
