In Crimea, among other targets, the Tavriyska combined heat and power plant was attacked, but according to reports, Ukrainian drones have reached several regions, including Moscow as well as Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia.     The deceased was a 58-year-old Egyptian cook. Eight other sailors, including Turkish and Indian citizens, were rescued on a lifeboat.

    At the same time, new Russian attacks are reported against Odesa and Zaporizhzhia, where at least one person has been killed and several injured, according to TT.

        Now I believe it is wrong to assume that AI’s only way to generate revenue is its ability to replace employees. It is probably mostly about streamlining and being able to do more, but perhaps above all about reaching out with new products and services that depend on AI.

        There were no large masses of people who were directly fired when computers started becoming common in companies. Rather, the employees became more efficient. In the long run, of course, it was possible to replace some old manual jobs that became redundant, etc., but the computer created conditions for much more than just streamlining companies and replacing staff.

        Completely new industries, new products, and services appeared, and things that were impossible to do without computers suddenly became possible. Research and development benefited greatly from this. Here we have probably only begun to glimpse what AI can and will be able to offer and be used for.

        (A market that will grow is, of course, all the AI consultants who will help companies utilize the technology, but this will probably be mostly among the already established.)

        However, I believe it will take longer before the investments pay off, and there will obviously be some attrition along the way, and even the big players will probably have to revise their forecasts downwards. The big losers, I think, will be those aiming specifically at new services based on AI, where there will be a total overheating with many being pushed out. But these are primarily startups and not the large established companies.

        It took quite a few years before, for example, Facebook started making significant money, but now they have a turnover of 200 billion USD and make a profit of 60 billion USD per year. Those who invested large sums early became wealthy when the company then started delivering. The same goes for, for example, Google, but it happened a bit faster than for FB.

    Iran left the talks and closed Hormuz, this is roughly where the US has a problem.

    Iran has naturally taken advantage of the ceasefire and received equipment from Russia and China that they believe makes a difference after the first test of capability.

    Trump has handled it poorly; if they had gone for regime change when Iran was weak, they would have avoided this.

      They left the negotiations for a few hours after Trump threatened them. I wonder if the Republicans are starting to get tired of his sudden statements and posts on social media that only cause confusion. I myself suspect that the purpose was stock market manipulation so he could make some extra money.

      He will probably miss that ability if there is peace, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up ruining the whole process just because of that. 😄

      The whole war must be seen as a total failure so far. The only sensible thing is probably that Iran has lost some weapons, ships, and other things, but otherwise it has rather only strengthened them.

        So far, no one has dared because Trump blows up their positions with some new statement once a week – they have been whipped into passivity.

        If they see an opening, oil prices could soar just like after 2008.

    Starmer was ousted by his own, but according to his speech, he has made the UK 20 times better in two years – hard to make that add up. Opposition leader for four years who wins by promising everything only to immediately make broad popular groups so dissatisfied that they turn to Reform in local elections out of pure frustration.

    The Defence Minister’s resignation is hard to understand – according to Starmer, the armed forces have received everything they pointed out.

    A fairly simple way forward for Labour would probably have been to hold a referendum on rejoining the EU?

    And crack down on crime, not the opposite, stop solving crimes (6% clearance rate) and instead come up with thought crimes that the Metropolitan Police finally refuse to deal with – they issued press releases saying they are ending that line of investigation.

    The UK clearly shows that as a government, one should pursue a policy that serves the large broad taxpaying citizen group in a country I usually call the majority society, regardless of ethnicity. When they get sour, it becomes difficult to govern. 

    Ireland also has problems when they first tried to silence dissatisfied citizens through thought crimes and then, when there was a general strike, the government tried to get the army involved, which refused to participate – a big after-discussion around that move which fell flat.

    The Northern Irish, who are somewhat more prone to violence, have taken this to the next level – almost low-intensity warfare over there now.

    Labour does not seem to be planning a new election but just to replace him, who is a bit unclear but everyone is talking about Burnham who is further left than Starmer for better or worse.

    Interest rates went up immediately – if they continue up, it will be lively. Probably Burnham is an interest rate accelerator but a new election in the fall is probably not good either.

    The UK is starting to emerge as a candidate to take the big hit IF we get a financial crisis in the fall, politically unstable and since they are outside the EU also vulnerable – very attractive for predators who never miss the chance to crash a country for short-term enrichment. Now it might not be Soros like in the 90s but the modus operandi never changes 😀

    I saw an interview with two fund managers who planned the coup and they got Soros on board so the story is a bit of a retrospective construction apparently as they were the primary sources. Soros was asked and he quickly saw that they were going in too low so he teamed up with them to get enough capital to succeed in breaking the pound.

    The UK, the world’s oldest democracy (or parliament…) is a study in how not to manage a country, yes they were clipped during WW2 but were still a valued member of the EU, the financial gateway for the whole world into the EU and a sensible voice that Sweden often voted with.

    The whole world bought houses in London at any price and burned a lot of pesetas when they moved around the city. London where the police only had batons because there was no crime.

    Quite interesting nonetheless that Russia at war is politically more stable than countries in the EU at peace.

    The Latvian government fell, Denmark is unable to form a government, the UK is in chaos.

    Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria have had to fight hard not to become pro-Russian, with Bulgaria now having a pro-Russian government.

    Poland is a bit tricky, a lot of conflict with Ukraine right now.

    In France, NR (that’s what they’re called now…) is well on its way to taking over from Macron.

    In Germany, AfD is the largest party.

    Spain’s prime minister is under investigation for corruption and his wife has been placed under house arrest (or perhaps it should be called country arrest when one is not allowed to leave the country).

    It is still quite interesting that we in Europe are completely incapable of uniting even when we have an acute threat in our neighborhood that is potentially increasing.

    Sweden is one of the few stable partners to Ukraine remaining where we do not risk getting a directly Ukraine-hostile government that on day one breaks everything off and starts blocking in the EU.

    I think you can actually vote for any political party in the election, I looked through it once and no one is running on ending support for Ukraine.

    However, a new government might choose to prioritize other things but our support for Ukraine is broad so maybe it’s not something one dares to challenge.

    High likelihood that we will continue if we can avoid a deadlock in forming a government.

      Dictatorships are stable due to harsh and violent control of the population, but when things start to go badly, as now in Russia, dissatisfaction builds up until the apparatus of violence can no longer hold it back, and then everything happens at once. The country is plunged into chaos until a new dictator takes place, or the military takes power.

      In democracies, we have safety valves so that when things get worse and the population becomes dissatisfied, we can vote out the bad politicians in the next election, or if the dissatisfaction within the party becomes too great, do as in England. 

      We get a continuous change instead of a reset when the dictator dies or is overthrown.

      It is worrying that the right continues to advance, but that is probably largely due to dissatisfaction with the politics that have been pursued, and that the improvements promised have not been realized. Unfortunately, many voters do not see the whole picture, and cannot understand the difficulties politicians face these days when they try to make some major changes, and are constantly attacked by extremists from both sides who use the same language as Trump. It is easy for these voters who feel overlooked and unsuccessful, instead of looking in the mirror, to blame their shortcomings on a third party, e.g. the left or immigrants, and then vote for the one who has simple answers to all the difficult questions. 

      Then when these right-wing populists finally come into government positions, they will not be able to do what they promised, but will blame the problems on others, like Trump. With a functioning democracy, they will then be gone in the next election, but they can cause a lot of disorder during the four years they sit.

    That Zelensky dares to go hard against Belarus and force them to take measures that will make Putin consider entering the country is in itself highly interesting.

    To me, it signals that Ukraine has only just begun.

    Poland has already asked Ukraine to restrain itself with attacks in the neighboring area – it will be interesting to see IF the EU or countries in Europe have an opinion on the matter or if we remain silent.

    Apparently, Lukashenko has shut down the navigation towers for drones in Belarus, which will directly affect Russia’s ability to drone effectively in Ukraine.

    A continuation will most likely follow and everything is good for us 😍😍

    Earlier today I wrote that I suspected the Republicans are probably starting to get tired of Trump.

    A new and four existing American military bases are being built/renovated in Poland.
    The new one will accommodate almost 5,000 personnel. Everything is being built with U.S. participation.
    Logistics, technology, and social spaces are the focus. Poland is financing and expanding the infrastructure for American military presence at four existing Polish military facilities (not entirely new independent “American bases” in the classical sense, but upgrades of Polish bases for U.S. use). The project involves about 500 million USD and the U.S. has approved the plans.

    One is the Air Port of Debarkation (APOD) – a large logistics and unloading hub for troops and equipment. Includes 3 km of newly laid railway tracks for tanks, etc., staging areas, temporary accommodation, dining hall, laundry, medical care, sports facility, post office, administration building, armory, telecom, and security systems. The goal is to handle large transport aircraft such as the C-5 Galaxy and achieve the highest security category. Construction is ongoing.

    A logistics and air hub focused on prepositioned equipment, flight operations, and Deployable Air Base System (completed 2026). Supports rapid deployments.

    Two sites for training and support operations.

    The entirely new fifth:

    A modern, centralized base for about 5,000 American armored soldiers on an area of 160 hectares.

    It will have the status of an official base for the Armored Brigade Combat Group, aka Brigade Operations Facility.

    Twelve modern barracks buildings will form the heart of the residential area. Three large dining halls, equipped with advanced kitchen facilities.

    A dedicated recreation building, a large sports center, and a modern medical clinic, which will guarantee full healthcare without burdening the local civilian healthcare system.

    The base will house a headquarters building for the entire brigade, as well as seven smaller headquarters buildings for individual battalions.

    Effective tactical command will be facilitated by fourteen operational buildings designed to accommodate thirty-seven companies. An important part of the base will also be seven large technical/repair halls, next to which specialized parking areas will be created for tactical vehicles, including the heaviest Abrams tanks.

    The project will include a warehouse for support battalions and a technically advanced IT system facility.

    American air and special forces will also gain a permanent foothold. A base for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) has been expanded,

    In two of the smaller existing bases, an advanced combat training center and a base for 3,600 personnel are being built in one.

      Those four bases are old bases where decisions about the cooperation were already made in 2019 and also in connection with that, planning for the expansion (funded by Poland) began.

      So it was under Trump and not Biden, so he can take the credit there:

      The fifth new base is a proposal from Poland’s side but it seems no decision has yet been made.
      There too, Poland covers the costs while the USA contributes with planning, coordination, review, etc. to make sure it turns out the way they want. Then, of course, the latter covers their own soldiers and the military equipment they fill the facility with. Since the major costs fall on Poland, it would of course not be surprising if the USA agrees to the proposal. 

      The two projects concerning the expansion at the airport, on the other hand, seem to be ongoing constructions.

      But as said, all projects are financed by Poland even though the USA partly gets involved and tweaks them, so it sounds like something Trump should appreciate.

      Trump reversed course regarding the soldiers to Poland and was going to send an additional 5,000 instead. That might be connected to the new base because that is roughly what it is supposed to accommodate if a decision has actually been made to let Poland build it.

      Honestly, I believe there are some within the US defense who steer Trump on these issues and got him to back down when it came to withdrawing troops from Poland. But that is good of him in that case that he listens to them.

        Close to Biden there but an earlier Trump. Yes, then there are probably the running costs with the equipment that needs to be upgraded frequently, which is not nearly as much the case for the buildings. And the local area benefits from the soldier presence.
