Ukraine has attacked industries in the city of Lipetsk – Russian losses

Ukraine once again shows why they will defeat Russia; the choice of targets for last night’s attacks is brilliant.

According to unconfirmed reports, Ukraine attacked industrial facilities in the Russian city of Lipetsk during the night. According to the governor, fires have broken out, but it has not been confirmed that this was due to an attack. The affected facilities include Novolipetsk Steel and the Lipetsk CHPP-2 combined heat and power plant.

Novolipetsk Steel (NLMK) is a large steel plant that encompasses the entire production chain within the same industrial area: coke ovens, blast furnaces, oxygen steelworks, continuous casting, and rolling mills. Production ranges from pig iron and crude steel to hot- and cold-rolled sheet, galvanized and coated sheet, as well as so-called electrical steel (alloys, etc.) for transformers, generators, motors, and much more. The capacity is about 12-14 million tons of steel per year. It is thus one of Russia’s largest steel plants and accounts for around 18-20% of production.

Apparently, there are two types of electrical steel: grain-oriented and non-grain-oriented electrical steel. Grain-oriented steel is used for transformers, and regarding that production, Novolipetsk Steel itself claims to account for 100% of production in Russia. The final processing of that type of steel does not take place in Lipetsk but at another facility, VIZ-Steel in Yekaterinburg, but at the same time, that facility is entirely dependent on deliveries from NLMK. If Ukraine has succeeded in stopping production in Lipetsk, it is basically goodbye to transformer production in Russia.

Transformers are used virtually everywhere. The largest are found where electricity is produced: nuclear power plants, combined heat and power plants, and waterworks, etc., but also in transformer stations throughout the regular power grid. There are also special transformers for railways, mines, and industry. Measuring transformers are used for protection, control, and electricity measurement. However, Novolipetsk Steel’s products are not used for small transformers for simpler electronics, where switched-mode power supplies are normally used instead.

Since Ukraine constantly attacks oil refineries, combined heat and power plants, etc. (and we also have partisans sabotaging substations for, among other things, railways), Russia’s need for new transformers was probably high even before today’s attacks.

Russia can certainly import some from China now, but it is probably not that simple. Transformers (or the steel used) must be adapted to Russian standards and the Russian power grid. Moreover, if all of Russia’s capacity were to be lost, China hardly has such overproduction that it can easily replace Russian production. Regardless, it will dig further holes in the already strained Russian treasury.

Unlike Russia, which attacks homes and shopping centers and kills civilians, Ukraine has once again chosen a strategically important target for its attacks.

    Good choice of target transformers is important. Ukraine is playing the long game. Unfortunately, I am impatient and annoyed that this never turns around, preferably yesterday.

    Hopefully, the straw that breaks the camel’s back will come soon; my impression is that we should be extremely close now. (I have, however, thought that for several years, so my opinion should probably be taken with a grain of salt)

    Off-Topic, Trump’s tariffs

    Canada has become quite unfavorably disposed towards the USA after the tariffs that Trump introduced, Trump on his part does not seem to really understand why and imagines that even higher tariffs will solve the problems.

    The tariffs will take effect in 30 days, according to the White House. Exceptions are made for certain products, including energy products, minerals, and fish.

    The announcement comes after Trump threatened Canada with measures because the smoke from their forest fires drifted over the USA and ‘poisoned our air,’ as the president puts it.

    After watching the World Cup final alongside Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney on Sunday, Trump said their relationship was good, but added:

    – We have to stop the fires up there. If we can help them, we will. But maybe they should give us some compensation or something, or else we’ll impose some tariffs.”

      People usually first and foremost help their neighbors after asking if they need it.     Zelensky also cannot reinstate Fedorov.

    It is very important WHO he chooses as Chief of Defense, a bit less important with the Foreign Minister as long as that person pushes the drone weapon forward.

    Biletsky, for example, is a candidate but there are more, one is the current deputy.

    Considering how excellently Azov and a couple of others have performed and their general respect, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have one of those candidates from the pool.

    If there is positioning of interests behind it, it will probably be noticed by the citizens.

    Keep your fingers crossed.

      Well, fingers crossed that it gets resolved, it would be devastating if it were to lead to serious internal conflicts. At the same time, I wonder if it is really such a large part of the population that is upset.

      Military personnel are not elected officials and probably should not get involved in politics as long as they are active.

          Can’t keep up either, but understand that Zelensky wants to keep away those who start building too large a following. Suddenly, there is someone who thinks they can govern the country better, and if they have the army and part of the people with them, it can’t be stopped.

          At the same time, democracy is partly put at risk because elections are not held during war, so it is a tricky situation from the start.

          A difficult balancing act for Zelensky, while he has enormous responsibility and also has to meet leaders from the West every other day. Do not envy him.

          Hope he finds a solution.

    Not sure if you are keeping up with all our LNG and oil purchases from Russia still, EUR is flowing into Russia.

    The fact that Europe cannot manage something so simple after 4.5 years of full-scale war is, to say the least, fascinating.

      It will continue for a while longer but after the New Year it will be completely stopped.

      At the end of September, long contracts for LNG will be stopped, and at the New Year also for gas via pipeline.

      Short and medium-length agreements have already been stopped.

      They have been cautious and have not dared to break existing contracts and therefore ensure that no one can sign new ones when the old ones expire. If someone still has a contract after the New Year, they have only themselves to blame.

        Or only direct open purchases from Russia.

    He probably took over Syrskyi’s old job when he became Chief of the General Staff; Drapatyi and Syrskyi were not good friends at all.

    Drapatyi was a good candidate, now everything can return to normal after some theatrical voluntary resignations among the generals, half of whom wouldn’t have made any difference anyway.

    Was preparing a post in case Zelensky went bananas, but now that he didn’t, I guess I’ll write something else 😀

    Everyone should be satisfied – those who thought Fedorov should keep quiet and those who didn’t like Syrskyi. Everyone has gotten a new boss as Minister of Defense and Chief of the General Staff who was no one’s favorite or previously allied with Fedorov or Syrskyi.
