  4. Ukraine’s new commander-in-chief Mykhailo Drapatyi is respected by high-ranking military commanders and is regarded as an effective leader. This is reported by Kyiv Independent in a background article about the 43-year-old, who is otherwise described as media-shy.
Johan Huovinen, a teacher of military strategy at the Swedish Defence University, shares this view and notes in a comment to Dagens Nyheter that Drapatyi has been involved since 2014.
    – He has been involved for these twelve years and has advanced his position. He has gained a great deal of respect from the soldiers and the volunteers, says Huovinen.

The forecast for alternating weather has been accurate so far. Yesterday was bright sunshine and perfect vacation weather, today 13 degrees and rain. Nice that the Swedish summer is still the same so far. 😄

    Threats to the sunshine story
During the oil crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, the global energy system has undergone a historic shift, with solar power in the leading role. Renewable electricity is growing faster than electricity demand.
But bottlenecks threaten a continued sunshine story.

The USA has a president who seems to love oil, gas, and coal, but the world is sailing onward towards a renewable future. The heavily politicized exports of fossil giants Russia and Iran also emphasize how reduced fossil dependence has quickly broadened from a climate ambition to a high security policy priority for importing countries. Not least in Europe and much of Asia.

Lithuania and Pakistan are two concrete examples. During the period 2020-2025, both countries surged from 3 to nearly 20 percent share of solar power in their electricity systems, as part of escaping fossil dependence on their respective angry neighbors – Russia and Iran.

Swedish homeowners’ appetite for solar panels has been dampened since the interest rate shock of 2022-2023. However, production in large-scale solar power plants has increased by 70 percent since 2023 and Sweden’s share of solar in the electricity mix is growing. But it only reached a modest 2.6 percent in 2025.

In the midst of this spring’s burning oil crisis, the results were published showing how the world in 2025 entered a new era where fossil electricity is being pushed aside at an accelerating pace, in reports from among others the green think tank Ember and the International Energy Agency (IEA).

Here are some of the milestones passed last year:

Renewables cover all electricity growth. This year’s growth in renewable electricity production, of which three quarters was solar, exceeded the growth in total electricity – for the first time in history, excluding the pandemic year 2020. Renewables have begun to reduce, not just slow, the need for fossil electricity.
Dawn for solar, dusk for coal. Renewable electricity surpassed coal-fired electricity for the first time in over a century.
Solar became the largest in Spain. Spain became the first EU country with solar at the top of the electricity mix, as the solar share rose from 21 to 22 percent. The EU’s share rose from 11 to 13 percent.
Solar power surpassed wind power for the first time ever in the global electricity mix, and is approaching nuclear power. Both solar and wind are expected to overtake nuclear power already this year.
A record increase in solar electricity in 2025 of nearly 640 TWh globally in absolute terms corresponded to the entire electricity demand of the UK – for two years. The total global solar electricity reached nearly 2,800 TWh, equivalent to a year’s electricity demand in the entire EU.
Fossil electricity production turned to slightly shrinking volumes globally. For the first time in the 2000s, fossil electricity production decreased in both China and India, which are the largest and third largest in the world for fossil electricity.

Behind the solar revolution lies an enormous price drop for solar panels, about 90 percent over two decades measured in cost relative to generated energy. The background is partly a technological leap with increasingly efficient solar cells, partly an overcapacity in China’s solar industry.

A supply that has outpaced demand has also meant fully stocked inventories among European importers, which has passed price pressure in production and purchasing on to end customers.

A fundamental objection to both solar and wind power is that production often exceeds demand when the sun shines and the wind blows strongest, and falls to near zero when it is dark or calm – in contrast to fossil power plants or for that matter nuclear power and stored hydropower.

But significant breakthroughs in battery storage have quickly reduced costs and increased the capacity to save solar electricity generated during the day for use after dark. Battery costs fell 20 and 45 percent respectively during 2024 and 2025, according to EMBER’s calculations.

Solar power with battery storage on a large scale can from 2025 be built faster and cheaper than a gas power plant, especially if it depends on imported LNG (liquefied fossil gas), according to the think tank.

Despite the world’s renewable progress, the transport sector remains stuck in the fossil swamp. Lithuania, Pakistan, and Spain also fall victim to oil crises as long as the vehicle fleet does not switch to electric drive on a larger scale.

At the same time, solar power has its blemishes. China produces 80 percent of the world’s solar panels and also dominates greatly in battery storage, as well as several of the special metals used in auxiliary equipment. The world risks falling into a new geopolitical dependency in the energy sector.

Years of brutal competition and price dumping also create turbulence in China’s solar industry. Margins for China’s largest manufacturers have fallen to minus 10 percent, and the total losses for the two-year period 2024-2025 amount to more than 50 billion SEK, according to the IEA.

A solar power plant in China’s Shandong province.

China’s so far very strong domestic demand for solar power is simultaneously facing a crucial bottleneck. Solar power plants risk producing electricity for the crows when the expansion of power lines and battery storage lags behind.

This highlights similar challenges for the EU and the USA. Limited infrastructure is expected to contribute to a slowed solar rally in the coming years.

The IEA lowered last autumn its latest forecast for solar expansion up to 2030 by 5 percent. Above all, China and the USA’s expansion are expected to temporarily lose momentum in 2026 due to changed price regulations and tax incentives respectively.

But despite dark clouds in the sky, the amount of solar electricity in absolute terms is expected to double by 2030. Solar power is predicted to cover about 60 percent of the increased global electricity demand, which grows by nearly 20 percent by 2030, according to the IEA’s forecast.

The solar revolution is here to stay.

    1. Interesting!

Unfortunately, they have made it harder to sell surplus electricity for a profit here in Sweden, I think that has made it less interesting for private individuals anymore as it becomes a bit harder to make the investments pay off (with today’s electricity prices).

If the municipality hadn’t had forest to the south that blocks the sun, I would probably have invested in solar panels and batteries specifically to become largely self-sufficient in electricity for most of the year.

Solar panels have become more efficient, but it is still a bit difficult to manage during the winter in Sweden (unless you install a very large number of solar panels of course, but then it becomes difficult to make it pay off) while development continues forward and research is being done on new technologies that will become even more efficient, but for now other energy sources are required to cover the shortfall.

It’s just a shame that China is the leader in this area.

      1. Submit a citizen initiative to cut down the forest?

        Google’s AI said this:

“A citizen initiative in Gävle means that if you are registered in the municipality, you can submit an e-proposal (previously called a citizen proposal) to influence political decisions. When you submit an idea, other residents can vote on it. If the proposal gathers at least 50 votes within 60 days, it is forwarded to the politicians for investigation and decision.”

Unfortunately, I don’t live in Gävle, otherwise you would have gotten a vote from me! 😀

      1. Fun! One of the few non-Chinese solar cell manufacturers.
It also caused the stock to make a welcome jump upwards.

  10. Now it is over, Fedorov and Syrskyi are gone.

The new team is very capable, old squad leaders and Russia are dissatisfied.

    Zelensky managed this 👍👍👍

This is someone who started at the bottom and fought their way up by being competent

Both Fedorov and Syrskyi will probably receive offers for other positions and can do as they please.

  11. ** The ‘SVOshnik’ – a drunk, traumatised, violent veteran of the Ukraine war – has become a figure of fear in Russia. Russian journalist and activist Anastasia Kashevarova, who has fought for soldiers’ rights, admits that some veterans are out of control.

Many participants in the Ukraine war have been discharged, usually through ill-health or in some lucky cases, having completed contracts. They have brought with them a wave of violence and crime, with even prostitutes avoiding them.

A large part of the problem, as Kashevarova notes, is that participants in the ‘Special Military Operation’ (SVO) are often treated with deference by law enforcement agencies, leaving ordinary people vulnerable to their violent behaviour. She writes:

“For a long time, I tried to avoid the idea that being a SVO participant isn’t a license. Being a SVO participant carries a great responsibility to the front, to society. The face of a soldier is the face of the Russian Army, the face of the Defender of Russia.

“Unfortunately, society today views SVO participants with disdain; every word they say causes a backlash, as if they’re insulting a defender of the Motherland.

“We can trample and humiliate doctors, volunteers, civil servants, members of parliament, journalists, and teachers, but SVO participants are immune to all attacks, no matter what they do or where they fight.

“In one hospital, out of respect for the real soldiers and doctors—I don’t want to name the hospital—some SVO participants got drunk and started a riot. This happened at night.

“The police and the National Guard were called, but they couldn’t do anything because they were military personnel. The soldiers undergoing treatment had been drinking, and when their alcohol was taken away, they threatened to slit their wrists if it wasn’t returned.

  12. Off-Topic, Trump approval rating

It has turned up a bit for Trump the last few weeks, but just now at the end it looks like it is turning down again, I guess that is because the war in Iran has restarted and oil prices are rising again.

    New York Times:

    Silver Bulletin:

  13. Today’s weather

If you are going to take the subway in Stockholm, boots are a must (and maybe a life jacket just to be safe)!

“A sudden rainstorm has swept over Stockholm. Several subway stations in the capital have flooded, reports Expressen.

  14. Off-Topic, The Iran War

“Support for the Iran war is plummeting among Donald Trump’s voters, according to a new poll from Politico.

In early May, 50 percent of Maga voters believed the US should continue the war even if the economic cost increases. The corresponding figure two months later was 37 percent. Nearly one in five respondents believe the US should end the conflict regardless of the economic price.

The result can be interpreted as patience running out, and among Republican analysts frustration is rising.

    – The American people simply do not understand. They do not understand why we are involved in this war, says Curt Mills, editor-in-chief of the magazine The American Conservative.”

“Donald Trump threatens retaliatory attacks against Iran’s infrastructure in a post on his own platform Truth Social.

“From now on, for every time Iran shoots at a ship in the Strait of Hormuz, whether it is with a missile, rocket, drone, or other weapon, the US will bomb and destroy a bridge or a power plant,” writes Trump.

Bridges and power plants in or near the capital Tehran may also be targeted, according to Trump.”

  15. Off-Topic, the oil in Venezuela

It must have gone straight into Trump’s pocket!? 😄

“Since the US took control of Venezuela’s oil exports, it has collected 13 billion dollars, around 125 billion kronor, in revenues. But where the oil money has gone is largely unclear. This is reported by the Financial Times.

In April, the US stated that Venezuela had received around 3 billion dollars from oil exports, but the country’s government has so far only reported a single transfer of 300 million dollars.

At the same time, Donald Trump has given conflicting statements. He has said that the US ‘makes a lot of money’ from Venezuelan oil, while an executive order describes the US as the custodian of the funds.

Both Republicans and Democrats in Congress are now demanding answers about how the oil revenues are being used, writes the Financial Times.”
    https://omni.se/usa-har-tagit-in-125-miljarder-pa-oljan-oklart-vart-pengarna-tagit-vagen/a/V6dbm3

    1. Probably the Trump clan has made a killing. But on the other hand, he would probably have bragged about it and the MAGA cult would have declared what a genius president he is.

      1. Yes, that, or it has turned out that he, as usual, exaggerated so it was no more than 300 million.

A bit like the tariffs that were supposed to bring “trillions and trillions” but it ended up being less than half a “trillion,” of which he had to pay back half.

  16. Off-Topic, weather and climate

It must be the Green Party’s fault for not wanting nuclear power!

“This summer’s heatwaves in Europe have caused damage worth 20 billion kronor to food production, reports DN.

There is now a risk of sharply increased food prices this autumn, according to Helena Hansson, economist at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU).

    – It is not at all impossible that we will get a price shock similar to the one we had in 2022 after Russia invaded Ukraine, she says.

Cereal production has taken the worst hit, which in the first stage can mean price increases on products such as bread, pasta, muesli, flour, and oatmeal.

At a later stage, animal products such as beef, pork, eggs, and milk may also become more expensive because cereals are used as feed.”
    https://omni.se/prischock-pa-mat-hotar-efter-varmeboljorna/a/5pr60X

Now France has also reported excess mortality due to the heat (previously it was Germany that reported over 5,000):

“France has reported 5,754 more deaths than normal in June and July, when the country was hit by heatwaves. This is stated by the French health authority according to Reuters.

Excess mortality “is unprecedented,” the authority writes in its report. The authority also points out that excess mortality was observed in all age groups over 15 years, but was most noticeable among people over 75.

The individuals died from various causes that cannot yet be definitively linked to the heatwave, according to the authority.

The measurement period lasted from June 17 to July 2. During the entire last summer, 5,700 deaths occurred above the average for the period.”
    https://omni.se/over-5700-fler-doda-an-normalt-i-frankrikes-extremhetta/a/xr9P1n

    1. Well well.
In all honesty, one must acknowledge that the Green Party has, with all desired clarity, shown that they have prioritized shutting down emergency rooms over keeping greenhouse gas emissions down.

      1. 100% true Pehr. Unfortunately, decommissioned nuclear power automatically leads to increased alternative base power, which, apart from hydro, produces carbon dioxide.

    2. Nuclear power can provide cooling – refreshment. But also heat if that is preferred. By using fuel that is not a product of biologically decomposed matter, compressed by the Earth’s weight over many millions of years, but instead uses fuel that comes from the formation of the universe several billion years ago, carbon dioxide emissions resulting from the combustion of fossil fuels are avoided. In other words, a fuel is used that was created roughly at the same time as the sun, which is another source without impact on the climate.

Robert Brovdi, callsign “Magyar”, Commander of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces, explained how drones are changing the course of the war. Ukraine is systematically isolating occupied Crimea by destroying the Russian army’s fuel, energy, and naval logistics. According to Brovdi, the goal is to deprive the occupiers of their ability to maintain and supply their military forces on the peninsula. He also explained how civilian drones evolved into a strike force, outlined five steps to protect NATO borders, and warned about the future of mass Shahed drone attacks.

That would be expensive, exhausting, and impossible to maintain.Press enter or click to view the image in full sizeSo you need something cheaper: fear.Convince people that enemies are everywhere, that the country is constantly threatened, and that survival requires obedience. When they respond, you point to their reaction and say, “See? They want to attack us.”And when someone demands rights, you call them a foreign agent. When they ask for proof, you say that the demand for proof itself proves the conspiracy. That is why the Western world, if it ever hopes to build a safer relationship with Russia in the future, must understand the fears that the Russian state has nurtured for generations. These fears cannot simply be ignored, mocked, or dismissed as stupidity. For millions of Russians, fear of the West is not just a political opinion. It is part of their worldview. And when a person has invested years of loyalty, shame, silence, and moral compromises in a fear, it becomes almost unbearable to admit that the fear was fabricated.Dictators understand this perfectly. The Western world may say to Russians: “You have been manipulated.” The dictator says to them: “You are wise, foresighted, and surrounded by enemies.”Guess which message is easiest to accept? But a dictator cannot create mass fear out of nothing. He can only use fears that already have historical, emotional, or psychological roots. For many Russians, NATO’s expansion appears as a real security threat. They look at the map and see something disturbing. During the Cold War, NATO was far away. But then, step by step, the alliance moved closer to Russia’s borders. If you grew up with Russian TV on, this looks deliberate: like a hostile plan written somewhere in Washington. This is the first thing future negotiators must understand. You cannot laugh at the emotional image that many Russians have in their heads. You must use it as a starting point. It is important to understand that the overwhelming majority of Russians have very poor knowledge of history, especially other countries’ history. So they do not even ask the most obvious question: why did all these recently independent countries want to join NATO in the first place?NATO membership costs a lot of money. It also brings obligations. It means investing in your military to bring it up to the bloc’s standards and a readiness to come to other members’ aid, with the risk that your soldiers may have to fight and die far from home. Countries do not do this without reason. In fact, they have a reason: fear of what will happen to them without the bloc’s protection.Poland joined NATO because they remembered their complicated history with Russia: partitions that Moscow participated in, and then decades of Soviet dominance. The Baltic states – Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania – remembered how they were swallowed by…

  20. EU ambassadors are not in agreement on a 21st sanctions package against Russia, an EU diplomat told Reuters.
The envoys will meet again tomorrow, the source added.
The EU has tried to reach a compromise with Greece, which has wanted to change some of the sanctions.
This mainly concerns an import ban and a ban on the transport of liquefied natural gas from Russia. Athens has previously argued that Russia will not be harmed by such a ban. Instead, the country will turn to other countries such as China for international transport.

    1. Not just hitec:

This year, 743 square kilometers of our country have been liberated under my command. The army that two years ago defended itself fiercely is now going on the offensive.

I hand over to my successor an army that not only holds the defense but is also on the attack – with initiative, with structure, with people who know how to strike the enemy. And I sincerely hope that this offensive will continue. Everything is in place for it.
