Zelensky posted a message on social media yesterday stating that Ukraine has recaptured more land during the autumn than Russia has taken. Just during Operation Vivaldi, 277 square kilometers were retaken. It is not only during the autumn that Ukraine has recaptured more; this has also happened earlier in the year. Read more here.
This is how it has looked over the past year up to the end of September (the bars below the line show when Ukraine has recaptured more land than Russia has taken).

Russia carried out repeated ballistic missile attacks on Kyiv during the night. Unlike the night before, air raid alarms and warnings were issued by the Ukrainian Air Force so the population received a warning.
The attack on October 12 took place after the US threatened to withhold intelligence information from Ukraine unless Kyiv ceased its attacks on Russian refineries – sources told Kyiv Independent. A senior Ukrainian official told Kyiv Independent that the missile attack on October 18 followed a similar pattern. “The ‘warning’ of a ballistic threat came only after the attack had already taken place,” said the official. “They have something in the works again.”
The attack caused, among other things, damage to subway stations and railway tracks, and a 25-story residential building was hit by falling debris. There are reports that a woman in her 20s was killed during the attacks. Read more here and here.
The US refuses to deliver Patriot missiles to Ukraine despite them already being paid for under NATO’s PURL initiative according to Zelensky. Washington has approved only part of the missiles purchased through the initiative. “The American side approved delivery of only some of them, but not the rest. And this is not a technical issue,” Zelensky said. He also said that the US currently delivers only 12 Patriot missiles per month – about a quarter of the number provided under the previous President Joe Biden administration.
If the information is correct (and it would be quite reckless of Zelensky to claim it if it were not true) that the missiles are already paid for and the US is withholding them, it means that the US can no longer be considered a reliable partner. Read more here.
Putin has apparently proposed that he, Trump, and Xi meet on November 18-19 to talk about peace in Ukraine. Zelensky is not invited because those three obviously do not think he has anything to say about it.
Russian losses in Ukraine
Again, really high losses of Russian soldiers, the second highest during the entire war, while other losses are somewhat below normal. Is this perhaps what happens when Ukraine goes on the offensive? The Russian soldiers are surprised and overrun while the rest of the soldiers handling hardware further back are busy fleeing?

Tsar Putin the loser is under pressure.
“Sources: Putin wants peace talks with Xi and Trump
Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has proposed a meeting with his American and Chinese counterparts to end the war in Ukraine.
This is reported by several sources with insight to The Wall Street Journal.
The meeting with Xi Jinping and Donald Trump has been proposed for next month. The purpose is to reach an agreement that benefits Russia, according to the newspaper’s information.
Discussions about a potential meeting are ongoing, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirms to WSJ. However, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky is reportedly not invited to participate.
Putin’s proposal is said to have come during a phone call with Trump on October 9 – the same call that resulted in an agreement to release hundreds of thousands of tons of diesel to American and international markets.
At the same time, the American president earlier this week decided to exempt Russia from sanctions related to fuel exports.
Putin is now said to want to take advantage of this opening from the US side and achieve a favorable outcome in negotiations about Ukraine.”

Also interprets it as him beginning to realize where this is headed and now trying to find a way out while it can still be sold as a victory and while Trump can still help him.
Weird that he wants the conversation after the American election? Shouldn’t Trump’s possibilities be more limited then? A quick peace agreement where all Ukrainians are sent to the moon and ryz takes over the whole country tomorrow would probably be the best?*
May contain traces of irony
Europe should call for a peace meeting, for example at the UN, with representatives from Europe, Ukraine, China, India, and perhaps from South America and Africa. From the USA, Rubio might possibly participate. Russia and Trump should only receive proposals discussed during the meeting.
** Sybiha: 76 Energy Strikes Prove Moscow Flouts Ceasefire
In brief: Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has declared that 76 Russian strikes against Ukraine’s energy sector over the past week prove Moscow has honored no commitments since US President Donald Trump declared an “energy ceasefire.” Highlighting a weekly barrage of nearly 2,700 drones, 1,700 guided bombs, and 66 missiles, Sybiha warned that the Kremlin is imitating diplomacy to secure economic accommodations. He cautioned Western partners that waiving sanctions or easing economic pressure merely injects fresh hard currency into the Russian military budget, urging allies to intensify economic deterrence and bolster Ukrainian air defenses ahead of winter. **

Yes, Pehr, you are right in your observation that Putin is more than heavily pressured at the moment.
That also explains Trump’s escalated rhetoric.
I believe there are several interacting factors underlying this.
Partly that the Russian sham state has seriously started to crack, and that Putin has begun to realize that it is becoming increasingly difficult to resource and tactically adapt their military capabilities.
As for Trump and his sycophants, they are shocked and desperate after they have begun to realize that the midterm election is increasingly likely to result in a disaster and that their grip on the party is starting to loosen.
Just like Anders Puck Nielsen, I do not believe that Trump’s actions are solely based on kompromat and greed, but that Trump’s vision of the world order is that it is divided into purely feudal spheres of interest and thus that Ukraine is part of the Russian one while other parts of Europe should be vassals to the USA.
Even if China were to jump on that train, it would not work, since two of these wannabe hegemons are clearly on the ropes and their intended vassals are not weak or submissive enough as these foolish pretend monarchs seem to think and have no plans to play along in these charades.
Regarding the paid but undelivered robots from the Purl cooperation, it is important to play hardball, cut off new payments and limit American access to selected bases in Europe, or at least inform the congress members who are known to have their heads properly screwed on that this is on the table, plus that there is an intention to drastically reduce purchases of American debt in the near future if they do not uphold the agreements made.
Agreed! It is a brutal world being created by Trump/USA and Putin/Russia where the strong take whatever they want and can.
So far, we are mostly angry at Trump, but a people who have twice voted for this greedy madman cannot escape the shame. We see no loud protests in the streets against the US’s declaration of love for the terror state, only a few intellectuals discreetly criticizing it.
The discussions revolve around the diesel price, not the terror that Putin creates.
SHAME ON THE USA!!!!
I agree that they should be ashamed, but in practical terms, the important thing is that people vote against Trump, not why they do it. I hope and believe in a Democratic victory in the midterm elections, followed by greater incentives to dare to vote against Trump since he is marked as a loser.
Now, the average American primarily votes based on domestic policy. They don’t care much about what happens outside the country’s borders. In that case, R is still the best choice if you want to keep “the American dream,” i.e., (relatively) low taxes and mind your own business.
It’s unfortunate for those of us outside, but I try to explain how things look without getting my information from SVT and the rest of the TDS media.
That is definitely the case.
And right now, the current policies are not good at all for Americans, not least for the important traditional GOP voters.
The cost of living has increased significantly more than disposable incomes.
They, the USA, that is, shouted loudly and pointed with their whole hand. You Europeans are freeloaders. It’s not enough that we get to have bases in Europe and that you buy our debt securities. You must rearm significantly so that you can be useful in our wars as good and obedient vassals.
Now the Americans shout even louder when we in Europe take them at their word and rearm with our own weapons, so that we don’t have to participate in their wars, while we have begun to realize that our debt securities are probably at least as sought after as the American ones and that we should probably start issuing these seriously within a not too distant future.
Sometimes you should be careful what you wish for… right… Donnie boy??
Never thought I would live to see the day when the USA and Russia are practically allies against Europe.
No, it feels unreal!
That Trump was not on Ukraine’s side could have been suspected long before the election, but I thought he would be content with withdrawing support, not that he would choose Russia over Ukraine and not that he would choose Russia over Europe.
Yes, the US’s allies, primarily Europe (Canada has actually taken a tough stance), must start daring to speak out and clearly signal that we will not tolerate the bullying behavior and that if it continues, it will have long-term consequences.

Thinking that there are two different interpretations of the fact that Trump has now so clearly thrown off the mask and chosen Putin’s side.
1. Putin is panicking
2. Various preparations for sphere of influence politics are ready and “now we go”
One would like to hope for interpretation 1, but it is difficult to completely disregard interpretation 2.
What does the panel think?
The stakeholders (assuming it will be China, ryz, and the USA) are too weak at the moment. The USA and ryz have very little ‘free’ capacity to manage their sphere. China could probably take Taiwan relatively easily at the moment; we will surely condemn it strongly for a few days before returning to full trade.
So no, interpretation 2 is wrong. If 1 is correct, then that is wonderful, and much of the reporting points in that direction.
Positive positive, to borrow the king’s expression.
That Americans are often more uninterested in foreign policy than we in Europe is something we probably have known for a long time, even though the media in, among other places, Sweden likes to blow up various protests at universities, etc.
That China could relatively easily take Taiwan I am not as sure about as you seem to be.
China certainly has a more effective (and less drunk) military than the Russians, as well as things that work more often, but Taiwan will not give up without resistance, and regardless of what we think about Trump, I don’t think he wants to see an overly strong China while the rest of the Congress/Senate in the US definitely does not want to see that.
Both 1 and 2 could be true. And add:
3. Trump is panicking.
1 is correct. Every time Ukraine has made too much progress, the USA has thrown a wrench in the works. The pattern has been established since 2022, so I see it as verified fact. I actually believe it is bigger than Trump as well; it is also the USA’s deep state* strategy.
* Dry old men who smoke pipes and have a large oak table with a world map and who regard the US president as a mascot.
I am exactly like you, Maggan, when it comes to option no. 2.
Another aspect that we tend to forget, repress, or outright ignore is that we Europeans, without any assistance whatsoever, would be able to: BEAT THE HELL OUT OF Russia if we had to.
It’s mostly in the heads of us Europeans. We are significantly more competent, capable, and strong than our fragile self-confidence tells us.
It’s time for Europe to straighten up, take a deep breath, and become really, really murderous in spirit and lovingly embrace the spiked club as we calmly march towards the scruffy, worn-out, and overrated Russian.
Like the picture you paint! 👍

“Ingen vill bära skulden för republikanernas motgångar i delstaten Texas, skriver The Hill.

Unfortunately, things are going better for China than had been hoped.
“China’s economy grew by 4.5 percent in the third quarter, compared to the same period last year. This was a faster growth rate than expected – and in line with the country’s official target of 4.5-5 percent.
At the same time, the country’s trade surplus is growing and looks set to exceed last year’s record, which is creating friction with the EU, writes the Financial Times.
– The main message for the macroeconomy is that China’s economy is still supply- and production-driven, says Yuhan Zhang, economist at the Conference Board’s China Center.”

They have also seriously started to compete when it comes to AI models, which as usual also outcompete others by offering significantly lower prices. But if they are now planning to introduce restrictions, that might be a good thing after all. On the other hand, the USA is the other major competitor, so for Europe it might not matter that much.
“China is considering new export restrictions on AI technology, reports the Wall Street Journal.
The proposal includes advanced AI models, AI agents, and chip technology. The purpose is to prevent strategically important technology from ending up abroad, as rivalry with the USA intensifies.
The restrictions mainly concern the transfer of technology, not the use of Chinese AI services from other countries, according to the Financial Times.”

Three years ago, I would have said that that post on Twitter was written by a troll.
In 2026, it feels frighteningly likely that something like that will happen soon.
Everyone must hammer into the consciousness of the people / the winds of opinion that peace can never come to occupied territory. Only genocide can take place there.
You might remember previous posts about Ukraine being called the aggressor 😀
Of course, we remember that.
The hope probably lies in Putin not daring to tell the 1.5 million troops (?) he has in Ukraine that the SMO is over, not even for a day? How long does it take for them to “pack up” to Moscow?
The second hope possibly lies in the fact that Putin, not even as an obvious lie he does not intend to follow, can imagine signing anything at all before he has achieved his goals (as someone wrote in the reply on X).
Hope is, as is well known according to old folklore, the last thing to leave a person. So here we are now.
The positive thing here is that only Trump & Putin are this openly desperate when the situation is really bad for them. If Ukraine, with Europe backing them, just ignores them and keeps going, I think it will work out.
It is 2, but things are also going badly in Ukraine, so the strategy is probably to try to slow down there as much as possible.
Lavrov to mediate the opening of Hormuz?
https://escalationtrap.substack.com/p/iran-just-offered-to-reopen-hormuz
So what…?
Trump created the Hormuz crisis so that Russia can “solve it” and as a thank you for the help get Ukraine on a silver platter?
Hmmm.. I wonder how much “leverage” Russia and Loveröv really have to get Iran to agree to something that on one hand puts them in a long-term worse position and on the other gives Trump something he can use to save his “political skin.”
Regardless, it is probably too late time-wise as there are 15 days left until the midterm elections take place and the likelihood of a decisive breakthrough in the negotiations is small. The chances of being able to get sufficiently large deliveries of diesel to significantly lower the price at the pump are likewise small.
C gets the assignment from Norlen.
S was first according to the rules.
Shouldn’t M have been second?
It must not look like M is being favored here.
He has already said that he does not have a majority for his team (or maybe it is even disbanded?) until C changes course. So maybe it’s just as well for everyone that ETR gets the official task of figuring out what the odds for her dream constellation(s) actually look like… then we can all move on?
Then it is extremely exciting to see who gets 3rd and 4th. Magda / Uffe or Uffe / Magda? It might not matter since Magda’s team knows that it is the last chance regardless of the order, so no red button is decisive for the extra choice or not, i.e. someone (=C and S) will give in.
It would be awesome if Maggan doesn’t get any more attempts before a new election 🙂 The Speaker can move to the right. Maggan, Ringqvist, Ebba, Ulf. Then a new election.
Then I would have laughed for a long time! Unfortunately unlikely.
Feels more like S benefits. The only two who have the slightest chance are probably S and M. So it should have been S -> M -> S -> M, which would give Uffe the decisive last chance, as all the opposition parties are expected to back down for fear of a new election. Now Magda will likely get it, exactly what she wanted to achieve when she first interrupted her attempts and tried to get Uffe to take the first vote. I wonder how she got Norlén to agree to this?
Well, maybe that’s the case.
Or it will be C, M, SD 😀
Both S and C (as well as V and MP) have declared victory over Tidö after the election.
And C has blocked V, so it is probably natural that she gets the assignment.

The seven-day average is now back up to the same high level as at the turn of the year 2024/25.

The Kupiansk sprint was already in the autumn of 2022, but then it was also a significant peak compared to before, when we almost reached 1000 KWIA. Even if it doesn’t feel as impressive in hindsight now.
Now it is both the USA and Russia that are primarily trying to mess with the blog!
You almost start to feel like Zelensky! 😄
(I still have over 10,000 IP numbers blocked in my external firewall.)
Do not answer if it is secret, but:
How can you tell if someone is trying to mess with the blog?
Spam messages, DNS attacks, or what?
It looks a bit different, but the list above comes from a security plugin installed here on the blog. They in turn have blacklists with IP numbers that they check against.
The blacklists are often based on reports of suspicious activity contributed by those who run servers.
There are many different ways to suspect an IP number (visitor).
For example, those who make lots of login attempts hoping to guess the password.
They can be calls to various forms of malicious code. If an attacker has gained access to a website, they often install backdoors to maintain access; other attackers also look for these backdoors so they can exploit them too. It shows in the logs what addresses they try to reach even if those files do not exist on any of your websites. If you know what those files are called and see visitors from different IP numbers trying to reach them, you know they are malicious and can block them or report it.
Other patterns can be that they look for other files that do not exist at all, even if they are not directly dangerous files. For example, WordPress, which this site is built on, has a standard path to the login page (and other pages) that looks the same on all WordPress sites.
If you then have a completely different site that is not built on WordPress at all, where you see that they still try to reach the WordPress-specific pages, you also know that they are not regular visitors.
Different platforms used to build the web (services, websites, etc.) sometimes have certain files needed for configuration, e.g., connection to databases, etc. These are files that should normally be locked and not accessible directly (they should only be called internally by the system). Those who try to access those files directly (hoping someone forgot to protect them) are also malicious.
It can look roughly like that. The most common is, as mentioned, to use blacklists where people help each other report suspicious IP numbers. The blacklists then make assessments based on the number of reports, how old they are, etc., and then you can in turn use them to block.
One problem is that ordinary completely unaware private individuals and even site owners can be hacked or get viruses. When their computers or websites suddenly start sending out attack attempts, it is easy for them to end up on blacklists. When they have cleaned up the computer or website, you don’t want them to be blocked forever. And another problem is that you can be assigned different IP numbers, for example for your mobile (but sometimes also at home), and then you might get an IP that someone else has used in a bad way. So you cannot block IP numbers forever when they have shown to have done something bad.
Then we have spam, as you mentioned, but that is not really an attack against the blog but against the one managing the email. It varies but usually comes between 2-3 and sometimes up to maybe 10 a day. Most of it is harmless (they try to advertise something) but there are also many links that I absolutely do not want to click on, and actually when it comes to spam, about 90% of those links are Russian and end with .ru.
Forgot to mention the worst problem. It is when, for example, WordPress or a completely legitimate plugin happens to have a security hole and it is discovered. Once the knowledge about it spreads, you don’t have much time. Suddenly, all “hackers” will try to exploit it.
So you have to either uninstall, or update if a new version has been released where it is fixed. Since these are completely legitimate files, you can’t suspect and block anything in advance.
Then there are pure DDOS attacks as well. They are often actually harmless except that sites and servers become overloaded and stop responding. But they can actually also be used to get in, because when the servers become overloaded and can’t keep up, it can actually open up vulnerabilities (even though this is not so common today).
The only protection there is to hire third-party services that have the resources to handle enormous amounts of traffic and directly block malicious requests and redirect the traffic.
If you have large sites with business-critical information (or are generally exposed to it), services like Cloudflare and others are definitely worth the money.
Thank you for the lesson! Fun to learn something new.
Now I might be busy for a while, need to try out some things…
DenGamle is sitting in Pakistan anyway, that we know.

In brief: Prime Minister Koretskyi said Russia is increasingly focusing on Kyiv’s water supply and urged residents to prepare for difficult conditions this winter. Water is probably even more important than electricity; without water, there is no sewage, and things quickly go downhill in cities where toilets need to be managed with water. Hopefully, the waterworks have emergency power.
Agree, also believe that water is the most important.
I think it is underway now.

In just the last few days: Trump made a deal for the U.S. to buy Russian diesel, an economic lifeline for Putin; he and Elon Musk blamed each other for an order that slowed down Starlink satellite connectivity over Ukraine, hampering the country’s defenses during a devastating Russian attack; and Trump waived sanctions on Russia that Congress, led by his late friend Lindsey Graham, had pushed for.

Off-Topic, autumn!
This morning, you had to struggle to scrape the car windows, but in Gothenburg, it is apparently still summer by the skin of its teeth! Unfair! 😄
“The meteorological autumn has made its entrance in almost the entire country – but in Gothenburg, it is still summer, reports GP.
For it to be counted as autumn, the average temperature must be below ten degrees for at least five consecutive days. So far, Gothenburg has only had two, with Monday being the third if the cold persists.
– It was very close to becoming meteorological autumn in Gothenburg last week as well, but in the city center, it is still summer. They just escaped with an average temperature that was a tenth too high, says Fanny Saarela, meteorologist at SMHI.”

**I met in Kyiv with a team from the American defense company Lockheed Martin, which helps us save lives.
Its Patriot systems and F-16 aircraft play an important role in defending against Russian ballistic missiles and jet-powered “shaheds.” And things are not easy with either right now. We discussed how we can expand and increase supplies. The company is currently ramping up production of ballistic missile interceptors.
We count on the opportunity to purchase some of them to protect more lives. We are also trying to do everything possible to ensure that F-16 maintenance and repairs are carried out in Ukraine.
Thank you for the meeting. It is important that Lockheed Martin has a presence in Ukraine. We are doing everything on our part to expand our partnership. ** Video:

In the French school protests that Greta wholeheartedly supports (there is footage where she says a revolution is needed), the first attacks on private residences have taken place, they have broken down doors to apartments.
The police have also encountered the first elementary school students with firearms such as Scorpion and AK47.
The demonstrators want more school books.
Regards
The media houses in Europe.
One thing we will not get confirmed before the compilation is made in the French school protests is the rumors that have now arisen that they have been selective about which stores they empty.
I have seen a couple of videos with a person in a vest standing in front of a store saying “not this one, they are with us”.
The rumor claims that French-owned and Jewish stores have been looted but many Arab/Muslim (call it what you want) have been spared.
That would then explain why some people are on Twitter saying “I see zero on my street, this is exaggerated”. While the neighboring street is a hell.
What is absolutely clear already, however, is that there are shopkeepers involved in the protests, I have seen several videos.
Then there is a “break-in group” that opens doors or smashes display windows and when that is done they back off and go to the next store and the masses storm forward.
Then cars come where the loot is thrown in or they hide it in the nearby area.
I have also seen some videos of displayed pallets with empty bottles and they break up cobblestones which are piled up, build barricades or have homemade New Year’s rocket launchers.
This is INCREDIBLY organized.
And now spread to half of Europe.
That it is organized and undermined is beyond all doubt, but where do your other claims come from?
I would like to raise a warning finger. The Russian devils LOVE and are masters at exploiting situations like these and amplifying conflicts with half-truths and unverified incidents.
If you think about the Jews, they are always target group one, and 90% of hate crimes against them are committed by these groups who have now taken to the streets. I don’t think you should walk around with a Star of David and an Israeli flag in central Paris right now.
You can safely assume that Jewish stores have been prioritized targets.
There have been a couple of videos where organizers in the West say that this store is with us, it is protected.
As I said, maybe in a few weeks this will have been fully mapped out, so we shall see.
Interesting Johan.
When this becomes apparent to the general public, it will be another step towards the French government being able to strike very hard against the far left and the criminal elements and their enablers with little risk of backlash.
Revolutionary left paves the way for fascist right but now that we are right in the middle of it, how the hell are you supposed to deal with something like this 😐
History repeats itself anyway 😀
**A terrible Russian attack in the Kharkiv region. A “shahed” hit people directly – in a park near a regular café. Pure cruelty. Six people were killed, including children. A little girl was killed in her stroller – her name was Angelina, she was just over one year old, born in August 2025… Her mother’s name was Inna. She died in the hospital… Another girl who was killed was 11 years old. My condolences to their families and loved ones. Another 14 people were injured, including six more children.
I am grateful to everyone who supports Ukraine under these circumstances and helps us shoot down “shaheds,” shoot down missiles, and stop Russian attacks. These are terrible images, but behind them lie shattered lives and the truth about this war. Lives must be protected. Ukraine needs air defense. One cannot think about making money with Russia as long as it continues its senseless war. We ask that sanctions against Russia remain as long as the killing continues. We ask America to be strong, and we ask it to apply the Lindsey Graham law. We ask Europe to continue its support. We ask that everything possible be done to bring peace and guarantee security. Ukraine wants peace. It is Russia that has insisted on continuing the killing all this time. The world has enough strength to stop the war. That strength must finally be used – against the murderers.**

”Donald Trump toughens his tone against Ukraine and moves closer to Vladimir Putin. The move is seen primarily as a way to advance his position at home, according to military expert Joakim Paasikivi. ”I don’t think Trump has any foreign policy,” he says.

No attacks on Russian oil refineries in exchange for Patriot missiles from the US to be able to protect against Moscow’s air strikes. That was Ukraine’s latest proposal to the American administration, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
– But they just want us to stop attacking the diesel supply, he said in an interview with Bloomberg over the weekend and continued:
– I think steps have been taken to convince Ukraine to surrender.
The words did not sit well with Donald Trump, who counterattacked on the platform Truth Social:
”Zelenskyy doesn’t care, and honestly, with all the money he gets from Europe and what the corrupt Joe Biden previously gave him, he doesn’t seem to want to end this war, and probably never has.”
The relationship between the countries has once again taken a hit after Donald Trump just over a week ago reached an agreement with Vladimir Putin for Russia to supply the world market with 4.8 million tons of diesel until April next year.
Hiding problems ahead of the election
The war in Iran has contributed to sharply rising fuel prices, something Trump is now trying to address. At the same time, he has pointed to Ukraine’s attacks on Russian oil refineries as a cause of the price increases.
– It’s about hiding problems he himself has caused ahead of the midterm elections. Diesel prices have to be blamed on someone else. Then Europe, and especially Ukraine, is the easiest target, says Joakim Paasikivi, geopolitical advisor at Mannheimer Swartling.
On November 3, the US goes to the polls. All seats in the House of Representatives and one third of the Senate are at stake. If the Republicans lose their majority in either chamber, the president risks having a much harder time pushing through his policies at home.
Joakim Paasikivi is a lieutenant colonel and former teacher of military strategy at the Swedish Defence University.

But what effect a changed balance of power would have on Ukraine policy is unclear. Joakim Paasikivi does not expect any major changes.
– I don’t think Trump has any foreign policy, he says and elaborates:
– My view is that he only has domestic policy with foreign policy consequences. He wants to maximize US power in the Western Hemisphere and economic growth, rather than follow any long-term foreign policy strategy.
Even if the Republicans lose their majority in Congress, Trump can continue to make decisions through presidential decrees, Paasikivi points out.
– It’s possible that his decisions will be challenged in courts, which can lead to prolonged processes. But I don’t think Trump will change his line towards Russia and Ukraine for that reason.
Putin invites Trump and Xi
At the same time, a major geopolitical change may be underway.
To end the Ukraine war, Putin has proposed a meeting with the American president and China’s leader Xi Jinping. Several sources with insight told The Wall Street Journal.
The proposal came during a phone call between Putin and Trump when the diesel agreement was made earlier in October. The meeting has been proposed to take place in November and Zelenskyy is left out, according to the information.
– The ambition is clear, they want to discuss over everyone else’s heads. That has been the strategy towards Ukraine and now the same thing has hit Europe.
Paasikivi compares the development to the Berlin Conference at the end of the 19th century, when colonial powers negotiated the division of Africa.
He sees the proposal as an expression of a new world order where the great powers want to settle spheres of interest without smaller countries having any say.
– I am not convinced it will work. The effect will be that the US makes itself irrelevant in large parts of the world. This applies to everyone who has believed that the US has been a defender of the liberal world order.
At the same time, Europe is vulnerable to American pressure. Several countries are heavily dependent on American defense systems, intelligence, satellite communication, and digital infrastructure.
But the US stance is at times contradictory, according to Paasikivi. While the government toughens rhetoric against Europe, military cooperation within NATO continues to function well, including through joint exercises.
– It is a fragmentation that is remarkable from the American side. But there is constant pressure from Trump who thinks Europe should comply with him, where Ukraine is the worst affected.”

Off topic midterm elections in the USA
Scott Lucas comments on the fact that the US administration under Krasnov has decided not to invite international election observers from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
This is a historic departure since the US has regularly welcomed OSCE observers to monitor both presidential and congressional elections since 2002.

They might have learned from Sweden? That’s how we’ve always worked.
“Because we have no election fraud” easy to say when you don’t scrutinize.
Sweden has adhered to its international commitments and formally invited the OSCE’s election observation body (ODIHR) to monitor the parliamentary, regional, and municipal elections on September 13, 2026.
Despite the invitation, the OSCE did not send any official observers to the Swedish election. However, this was not due to a ban, but because the Swedish electoral system received the highest possible rating.
Russia’s dictator Vladimir Putin wants to discuss an end to the war in Ukraine.
But he has one demand – Ukraine is not allowed to be at the negotiating table.
Instead, he has invited the USA and China – and Krasnov accepts.
Vladimir Putin has proposed a summit with himself, US President Krasnov, and China’s dictator Xi Jinping, reports the Wall Street Journal. At the meeting, he wants to discuss an end to the war in Ukraine.
However, he does not want Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky to participate in the meeting. Sources familiar with the discussions say that the summit is an attempt by Putin to negotiate a deal that favors Russia.
Now Krasnov is accepting.
– I would like to see such a meeting, yes, Krasnov said on Monday.
He is also trying to take advantage of the recent improved relations between him and Krasnov. The American president recently stopped planned sanctions against Russia and concluded a large fuel agreement between the countries.
At the same time, Krasnov’s relationship with Zelensky has soured in recent weeks. The American president has, among other things, hinted that Ukraine needs a new president and accused Zelensky of not wanting to stop the war.
Krasnov is “open to the idea”
It is said that it was during the same phone call when the fuel agreement was concluded that Putin presented the idea of a meeting to Krasnov, according to a former Russian intelligence officer. Krasnov has not yet agreed to participate in the meeting, but an American official told WSJ that the president is “open to the idea.”
The Chinese president also does not seem to have given a definitive answer, but China experts say that the meeting would be a big step forward for Xi’s efforts to strengthen China’s role as a global mediator. At the same time, it could jeopardize China’s economic relations with European countries.
If the meeting takes place according to Putin’s proposal, it will be in connection with the upcoming summit on economic cooperation between Asia and the Pacific region, which will take place in China on November 18-19.
Zelensky has long said that he is ready to talk about peace – but that it requires Ukraine to be at the negotiating table. He also sees it as out of the question that Ukraine would give up any of the territories that Russia occupies.

The USA is opening up for tankers in the so-called shadow fleet to legally transport oil again, writes Bloomberg.
– We will move some of the ships from what I call the “rogue fleet” to the “good fleet,” says Energy Minister Chris Wright on Monday.
According to Wright, investors will buy and refurbish sanctioned ships that have been taken out of service. After an approval process, they will be allowed to transport oil that is not subject to sanctions.
Last week, sources told the Financial Times that the USA was considering eased sanctions on ships linked to Iran and Russia to push down diesel prices ahead of the midterm elections.

haha, Trump has completely on his own started dismantling the sanctions without formally ending them?
It will surely be under the USA flag as well so no one can fight them.
It’s starting to get a bit tense for Europe
It seems like the “AI bubble” has started to slowly deflate on the stock market?
Now there might be a few sour posts for two days but we always come out on the other side.
However, Europe has entered what now comes with hands over the eyes and then it hurts more.
We’ll see what the protests end up with, it seems like Portugal got tired first and sent in the military at least.
The problem is probably how do you get 800,000 looters to stop without shooting live rounds if they don’t stop before you shoot live rounds.
From what I’ve heard, the curfews have NOT been followed at all in a couple of cities.
Can’t some media just leak all the Epstein material…
It is strange that we have half-supported Ukraine until we ourselves were affected, such a huge denial of the completely obvious. Putin is basically just doing what he has said he would do all along.
Then we can’t really accuse him of much, we are at war with Russia and then you try to win.
Trump is constantly speaking in the media now “Russia good”, “Zelensky bad actor”.
