Ukraine has attacked Ozon – Kyiv again hit by ballistic missiles – Russian losses

Ukraine has, overnight, for the first time attacked Ozon, Russia’s second largest logistics company for e-commerce. The attack took place in the Samara region and led to their warehouse being set on fire. Ozon themselves state that they had to evacuate over 500 employees. The governor of Samara has confirmed the attack and also stated that a large number of drones were shot down. Read more here

During the past day, a total of 202 combat engagements were recorded.

Yesterday, the enemy conducted 96 air strikes, during which 280 guided aerial bombs were dropped. Additionally, the attackers used 10,953 kamikaze drones and carried out 3,136 shellings against communities and our troops’ positions, including 35 with rocket artillery.

Hostile artillery shelling affected, among others, the communities of Bachivsk, Korenok, Neskuchne, Ryzhivka, Tovstodubove, Ulanove, Volfyne, Hirky, Budky, Kruzhok, Kucherivka, Shpyl, Stepanivka, and Rohizne in the Sumy region as well as Zoria in the Chernihiv region. Tovstodubove was also subjected to an air strike.

On the Prydniprovsk sector, the enemy conducted no assault operations during the past day.

On the Volyn and Polissya sectors, no signs have been detected that the enemy is forming offensive force groupings.

In total, the Russian attackers’ losses during the past day amounted to 1,240 personnel. Additionally, six tanks, six armored fighting vehicles, 64 artillery systems, two rocket artillery systems, three air defense systems, 11 ground-based missile systems, 1,792 unmanned aerial vehicles, 435 vehicles, and six units of special equipment were neutralized.

    1. Omnis version:

“The Ukrainian military carried out an attack last night on the Samara region in southern Russia, writes Kyiv Independent. Drones hit, among other things, a large warehouse belonging to the company Ozon, the country’s second largest e-commerce giant, which caught fire.

The Russian authorities report that several people were injured in the Ukrainian attack. The Russian governor does not mention which facilities were hit, but there are several oil facilities in the area that Ukraine has previously attacked.

Ukraine accuses Ozon of selling and transporting goods to the Russian army. Similar accusations and attacks have previously been directed at the large company Wildberries.”

    1. Still waiting for bingo. It doesn’t quite feel right that the small hits count when redeeming the card.

However, double chance for bingo with two cards!

  1. “During the night of August 22 (from 6:00 PM on August 21), the enemy attacked Ukraine with Iskander-M and S-400 ballistic missiles, three airborne missiles of the type Kh-31P/Kh-59 from the Kursk, Bryansk, and Belgorod regions as well as from the airspace over the Black Sea.

Additionally, loitering munitions of the “Banderol” type were used along with 217 attack drones of the Shahed type (more than 50 of which were jet-powered), Gerbera, and decoy drones of the “Parodiya” type. They were launched from the directions of Kursk, Oryol, Millerovo, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk in Russia as well as from the temporarily occupied areas of Donetsk and Hvardiiske on the temporarily occupied Crimea.

❗️ The main direction of the attack was the Kyiv and Odesa regions.

The air assault was countered by the air force, air defense missile units, electronic warfare units, unmanned systems, and mobile fire groups within Ukraine’s defense forces.

💥 According to preliminary data, by 9:00 AM the air defense had shot down or neutralized three Kh-31P/Kh-59 missiles, six “Banderol” loitering munitions, and 182 enemy drones of the Shahed, Gerbera, and other types in the northern, southern, eastern, and central parts of the country.

Hits from the enemy’s airborne attack weapons were registered at 41 locations, and debris from downed targets or wreckage was recorded at an additional 12 locations.

The attack is still ongoing and several enemy drones are in the airspace. Follow safety instructions!”

  2. Off-Topic, Trump and his tariffs

“That Donald Trump’s 50 percent tariffs on certain Canadian goods are now coming into effect is a severe blow to USMCA, the free trade agreement that applies between the neighboring countries and Mexico. This is what economic expert Richard Ouellet told AFP. Several of the goods now affected were previously protected by USMCA. – Until now, USMCA has functioned as a kind of protection. The Americans are now opening a gap in the agreement, he says. Last summer, Trump chose not to renew the free trade agreement, which came into force six years ago.”

  3. Off-Topic, Trump and Meloni

“The Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is surprised that the relationship with US President Donald Trump has deteriorated. In an interview with the New York Times, the right-wing leader says that she and Trump share views on many issues, including migration policy. Therefore, she believed that the cooperation would work well. – Things have changed, she says. Trump has been harsh on several European countries, including Italy. This summer, he and Meloni were engaged in an open verbal dispute. In the interview, the Prime Minister says that she is an extremely honest person. – I never say anything that I do not mean. The throughput capacity of the port’s cargo terminals is about 6.8 million tons of cargo per year, of which bulk cargo, in particular oil products, accounts for more than one million tons per year.

  5. “☀️‼️ Russian resort town of Sochi loses tourists due to drone attacks and oil problems. Putin is already afraid to go to his favorite resort, — FT

📍In Sochi, flight bookings have fallen by 40%, and some hotels report a decrease in the number of guests by about 20%.

📍In addition to the threat of Ukrainian drone attacks, the region suffers from the environmental consequences of damage to oil infrastructure.

📍Even Putin has practically stopped going to his once favorite resort: if in 2021 he visited Sochi 24 times, then in 2024-2025 – only twice.”

  6. You follow Israel, right?

Turkey has gotten seriously upset with them.

    Egypt is upset.

Saudi-Turkey-Pakistan have some kind of alliance.

Their security situation is becoming precarious to say the least. Drone war in 2026 as well, so they are in a weak period before they have bridged it.

If the USA backs off, pretty much anything could happen.

UAE and Kuwait might also be in trouble, too rich for their own good.

The laws of war obviously also apply to Israel, but notably before Trump there was some kind of eternal peace underway and many accepted Israel.

    1. Absolutely. We think that the Middle East has been an unstable region, but it is nothing compared to what it would have been if the USA had not been responsible for security in the area.

The USA has naturally done this for its own interests, oil, which has driven the USA since World War II, and which has made many countries, or at least the elite in these countries, rich.

The USA has supported Israel since its inception, partly due to the influence of the Jewish diaspora in the USA, and partly because of the delusions of the Christian right.

The USA has the oil it needs.

      Trump is not religious.

The Christian right can have its Israeli Armageddon, but I do not believe there will be any second coming of Christ.

  7. Think like this – Europe occupied with Russia.

    The USA is withdrawing.

Israel is hopeless, the Samson doctrine goes both ways.

The drone weapon is effective and Israel is behind.

Probably best if they actually give the Palestinians their land and stop fighting – I think?

    1. It probably doesn’t matter if they get a piece of land, Hamas and Hezbollah will find some new reason to terrorize the region. It is their only reason for existence.

      1. At least Hamas basically only has the destruction of Israel as its purpose.

Hezbollah was originally a Shiite minority in Lebanon that radicalized after the Iranian revolution in ’79, and especially after Israel’s invasion in ’82.

Hamas is and has always been terrorists, while Hezbollah functions more as a tool for Iran.

    2. It would have been best if Hamas had not attacked, then there would have been conditions, but now it is probably much more difficult.

In the West Bank, there are some conditions for a proper state formation, but not in Gaza since Hamas took over after their civil war, and now after Israel’s overkill, there is hardly a stone left upon another in that city.

Why didn’t Egypt and Jordan give the Palestinians their own country before the Six-Day War? They had occupied the West Bank and Gaza between 1948 and 1967, but immediately after the Six-Day War, it became so pitiful for the Palestinians as they were occupied.

United Arab Republic occupation of the Gaza Strip – Wikipedia

Jordanian annexation of the West Bank – Wikipedia

The whole Middle East’s treatment of the Palestinians is quite rotten; they have been used as scapegoats in the resistance against Israel.

  8. Unfortunately, this means that they get a hard-to-defend border with 1967 which of course is the plan but unfortunately it can’t continue like this.

Gaza is no threat but the West Bank is right in the middle.

If they give up the Golan Heights they are done for.

UN control was worth zero and nothing.

They have had to solve every war themselves.

Or should Israel move to Russia, South America, Ukraine?

    Maybe Canada?

    A new country?

    1. What if fiction had surpassed reality! Then we would suddenly have had a completely different outcome in the MENA conflicts, and all the countries in the region would have had to move aside.

I am thinking of the book The Alexandria Link by Steve Berry.

  9. As a population, they could turn the North Pole into a green oasis, so the location probably doesn’t really matter.

    The money is there.

  10. Russia’s shitty machinery is behind this here, of course, just like South Africa, Vietnam, and others.

Israel is West-oriented, but for South Vietnam and South Africa, it ended, so try to reason about whether there is any transition.

Making oneself geographically vulnerable is no solution. So the 1967 border is just a step downward.

But it’s probably starting to burn.

No one in the West cared about South Vietnam after the US left, and in South Africa, there is a full hunt for migrants today from the rest of Africa, and no one cares the least when they are hacked to pieces.

    Geopolitics at its best.

  11. If you strip away all emotions and opinions – how to proceed?

None of the countries that have attempted a peaceful transition succeeded at all, and when it comes to Israel, the aversion is total.

No one wants to take in the Palestinians after Lebanon.

The Israelis are financially strong and there is space, but I don’t think anyone is considering the nearby area?

Yes, MENA is becoming Russian just as they are trying, but if we move away from oil dependence and turn to Africa, does it really make much difference?

Something probably needs to be done because we are heading towards full-scale war there.

Or everyone steps on the gas and then we’ll see how the dominoes fell, maybe that will happen?

    1. The Arab countries probably had an agreement that they would not grant Palestinians citizenship in their countries, because the Palestinians are supposed to have their country where Israel is located. However, they probably have a somewhat different attitude nowadays, it is probably as you wrote the 1967 borders that apply..

Moreover, the Palestinians were granted permanent refugee status by the UN, and it was probably such that it is inherited on the paternal side, so there are probably twice as many now as originally.

  12. In terms of area, Israel is like Crimea, one of the islands in the Mediterranean or something like that.

    7 million Jews.

Just as everyone tries to get the Boers to move to them, don’t you think there are countries willing to take in this group for a win-win?

    Northern Finland 😀

    Gibraltar?

An island would otherwise be the best, harder to get to them.

Canada has completely unpopulated areas, Greenland a bit?

The point is probably that wherever they move, things will get going since they bring a lot of know-how?

    1. Maybe there is an Israel in exile in the USA who can do a Musk and make sure that all Israelis get to move to the USA since they are treated so badly in Israel.

But as you wrote, they do have a lot of knowledge and are diligent, so it would probably only be good for the country if they move there.

It might be that Europe would need them, but it didn’t go so well last time, but that wasn’t their fault. Up here in the Nordics wouldn’t be bad.

  13. I find it a bit difficult to see that MENA would become a Russian sphere of influence.
Russia is not the Soviet Union, and what can Putin-stan offer countries like Saudi Arabia that they cannot get elsewhere?
It is more likely that Turkey will regain some of the influence that its Ottoman predecessor had in the region. Turkey has a very strong military power for the region and a not insignificant defense industry, coupled with a growing civilian one as well.
At the same time, the state apparatus in Turkey is, for this part of the world, fairly strong despite the current regime with the aging Erdogan at the helm.

    1. Well, Turkey could probably become a great power again in that region. During the Ottoman Empire, there was quite a lot of autonomy and relative calm in the Middle East. It was later when the English and the French took out the ruler that things went wrong.

  14. Regarding Israel, there is a looming risk that the current government, with Bibbi desperately clinging to power, will quickly erode the progress previously made to normalize relations with some of the other countries in the region. This, combined with the Israeli society becoming increasingly polarized, will lead to more and more secular and educated citizens, especially those with ties to the USA, EU, Canada, and others, uprooting themselves and emigrating.
If a “new” geographic entity as a Jewish state is to be created, it is both logical and appropriate that it arises in the USA. This is because the USA has the largest Jewish population outside Israel. It used to be the case that more Jews lived in New York than in Tel Aviv.

    1. Is it reasonable to move the Jews again? They have been given their own land and hardly want to be uprooted to move to x. Who, by the way, can decide this? I would be quite upset if someone gave me a new country to move to, even if my current neighbors were unfriendly.

      1. Well, I would probably enjoy being among a bunch of Swedes in exile somewhere. You don’t have to live in Sweden. If Swedes become a minority in Sweden, we can move somewhere else and let the majority that remains take over the country. It could become a new era of migration.

      2. Completely unreasonable.
Ironically, Palestinians and Israelis are fundamentally the same “people,” as Israeli researchers have been able to show.

This research highlights how modern politics and national identities sometimes differ from the deep, shared biological roots in history.

Several studies have examined DNA from both Israelis (Jewish groups) and Palestinians.

        Common origin:
Both groups share a large part of their genetic heritage from ancient populations in the Levant (the Middle East region).

        Historical roots:
Researchers have compared modern DNA with DNA from Bronze Age skeletons (Canaanites). The results show that both Jews and Palestinians have deep genetic roots in the same ancient population.

        Genetic closeness:
Especially studies of the Y chromosome (which is inherited from father to son) show that Arab and Jewish populations in the region are closely related.

  15. ”The Armed Forces have received several personnel-intensive assignments after joining NATO – and it affects the employees, according to the union.
    – I feel that all three branches of the military are struggling, says Stefan Morin, chairman of the Officers’ Association.
The Air Force, Navy, and Army have in recent years participated in several NATO operations. At the same time, their organizations are supposed to grow and handle an unstable security situation, where the military threat to the alliance comes from Russia.
    – It is an intense period. We balance with the resources we have to achieve as much effect as possible, says Niklas Tornesjö, chief of staff at the Army Staff.
P7 in Revingehed, Skåne, has in the past two years sent 600 soldiers to NATO’s defense force in Latvia. Temporary relief is needed here, and therefore rangers from K3 will be the Swedish contribution to Latvia in spring 2028.
Marcus Nilsson, communications manager at P7, states that one reason is that the unit will replace its heavy vehicles.
    – That is a major reason. Then it will also be a breather for our officers, says Marcus Nilsson.
P7 has fulfilled NATO’s needs in Latvia with a so-called mechanized unit, i.e., heavy weapon systems, such as the Combat Vehicle 90 and the Leopard 2 tank.
The rangers from K3 do not have that type of weapons. They are fast-moving, with light vehicles, and will fight on foot.
    – The change of unit type has been made in dialogue with NATO and the nations involved. We would not send a unit that does not fulfill the tasks, says Niklas Tornesjö at the Army Staff.
The Army will also establish the new NATO force FLF Finland with a staff in Rovaniemi and soldiers stationed in Boden.
But FLF Finland has had difficulty attracting personnel. Currently, it has about 300 soldiers. The commander Daniel Rydberg hopes to double that number by 2028 and then increase it further.
”Recruitment remains a challenge, but the development is going in the right direction,” he writes in a comment to DN.
Stefan Morin at the Officers’ Association thinks that the situation for FLF Finland is a symptom of something the state should address: the possibility to attract with higher salaries and better conditions.
    – They fail to recruit to Boden because they have no tools to work with. That is, monetary attraction or other things that make one choose to take a job, says Stefan Morin.”

    1. No. I don’t think that will work. However, a partnership.
I hope that Canada imposes export tariffs on oil and gas as well as other items that Krasnov exempted because the USA needs them.

    2. It is an appealing idea with Canada as a full-fledged member of the EU.. Sorry, the incorrect spacing became completely irresistible
….but I believe it is more realistic with closer cooperation and ultimately I think it will result in an agreement similar to those that Norway and Switzerland have.
I also believe that Great Britain will get a similar agreement with the EU.

  16. So, the point is that we are probably heading towards a critical situation for Israel.

The USA is on its way out and Europe will not take up the mantle.

If they get overrun, everyone who doesn’t manage to escape will be killed, I guess everyone understands that?

But I suppose it will be a wait and see, maybe?

    1. If we (Europe) use the same tactics as with Ukraine, it will probably start with a wait and see approach. And Israel has an uphill battle x3: old traditional European antisemitism, newly imported antisemitism, how the warfare in Gaza was conducted.

    2. One should probably not count Israel out, and especially not the IDF. They have triumphed from a disadvantaged position before.
Moreover, they have the Air Force as a last resort. Unlike the rest of MENA, Israel is a democracy, and Netanyahu and his corrupt administration need to resign.

    3. Why would they, the Israelis, be overrun? I don’t believe any of their closest neighboring countries wish for that nowadays, partly because they want to see a good and ultimately stable development of the economies in each country, which would not be helped by overrunning Israel, and partly because it would cost them enormous losses and a “brilliant” future in an almost totally devastated region.
An unlikely but more probable scenario than an overrun Israel is that they are forced to leave large parts of the occupied territories and/or dismantle the lion’s share of the settlements. This would happen if the country becomes so weakened economically, politically, and militarily that they feel compelled to agree to substantial concessions.
However, as I mentioned above, I believe more Israelis will consider emigrating as they do not like the domestic or foreign political situation that the country has been in for a long time.

  17. The terrible “school attack” will be maximally spun by the Russian devils’ bots on the internet.

Good that the politicians in the middle of the election campaign DO NOT politicize it.

“A school attack puts the election campaign on pause and unites Ulf Kristersson and Magdalena Andersson in a unique way. Because no one wants politics right now.
    Henrik Torehammar
    Published 18.22
Once again, a terrible school attack has occurred in Sweden. But now in the final phase of the election campaign.

So the party leaders canceled their campaign speeches and went to Fagersta. Ulf Kristersson was supposed to give a summer speech in Nacka. Magdalena Andersson was supposed to have an election kickoff in Malmö. Instead, they came together to the memorial site outside the high school. Not as bitter enemies fighting for the prime minister post.

Not quite as a Social Democrat and a Moderate, but side by side as representatives of something greater. The country. Perhaps also a bit as human beings.

No campaign speeches or declarations. They walked in silence with a bouquet of flowers each for about a hundred meters. Bent down and lit a candle each to honor the victims of Friday’s attack. A 17-year-old girl has been murdered and two boys under 18 are in hospital with serious injuries. Then they spoke with citizens on site.

Because the last thing ordinary people want at this moment is politics. The party leaders understand that and the election schedule is hastily changed. Elisabeth Thand Ringqvist was already in Västerås and made a short visit in the morning. Simona Mohamsson canceled Sunday’s planned summer speech to go to Västmanland.

Perhaps the biggest contrast was for Nooshi Dadgostar, who was supposed to spend Saturday at a so-called block party, a neighborhood festival in Södermalm with artists Erik Lundin and Silvana Imam. Instead, she was in the industrial town of Västmanland, not only to honor the victims but also in her role as party leader to take care of members. Fagersta has long been one of the Left Party’s strongest strongholds and many members in the small town were directly affected by what happened.

The Prime Minister said that now the election campaign has taken a pause. All party leaders are called to Rosenbad on Saturday evening.

Which reminds of how politics acted after the school shooting at Risbergska. It is still too early to comment on why this happened, and thus difficult, or at least irresponsible, for politics to propose measures. But they can agree that it should not be like this, it must not be like this in Sweden. That on Friday, after their first week of school, not all high school students come home to their parents.

Kristersson is said to have contacted Andersson on Friday evening about going to Fagersta together. It also became, for the first time, a joint Instagram post from both party leaders, something not even the NATO process managed to achieve.

Perhaps now there will be a different tone in a heated election campaign that still does not seem to have found what it is about.”

    https://www.svd.se/a/M7pqEE/henrik-torehammar-ingen-vill-ha-politik-just-nu-efter-fagersta

    1. I have gotten the impression that he is a guy with foreign background with previous mental health issues who became radicalized by previous school attacks – something like that.

Yes, it is good that no one has capitalized on this politically, a young girl is dead and two boys are in intensive care.

  18. I also understand that it will be a wait and see, so the discussion is irrelevant until it is no longer so, but Israel is at war with Iran and their Iron Dome started bulging the last time it happened.

Hezbollah also had some success with the drone weapon they learned from Russia.

Moreover, they are, like everyone else, dependent on equipment from the USA, which the USA says they are beginning to run short of.

Isn’t there also a shortage of biological weapons like covid that a pressured Iran might also bring in as part of its Samson Doctrine?

Or nuclear weapons, North Korea has enough.

Ukraine clearly shows what persistent grinding does to Crimea, and Russia shows the same towards Ukraine – Russia and Iran stand in the shadows and have the capability.

Egypt has a strained relationship with them. There is currently an exchange of fire between them and Turkey, Iran is at war with them, Lebanon lacks the will/strength to get rid of Hezbollah.

Syria is therefore ruled by ISIS and we can probably guess what their priority is if the opportunity arises?

Iraq has problems with various militias and is far from calm.

There are 2 million Arabs living inside Israel and if they get a chance to make a choice, what do they choose?

If the USA pulls out, which is a real risk, Israel stands alone.

Europe will never ensure Israel’s national security.

The Kurds are on the right side of history but they are also starting to be vulnerable.

Fedtmule is probably right – if it happens, they go to the USA and get absorbed into the country.

What I was reasoning about was whether they could create some backwater of their own somewhere else that benefited the country that did not directly value the area.

But yes, if they get to choose between New York or a piece of Eastern Greenland, the choice is probably easy 😀

They can only hope that antisemites have not gained power the day they need help.

  19. Don’t know if you are following this, but China has cut off a couple of rare earth metals needed in batteries to Japan – 100% over a few months.

China is playing an endlessly dirty game right now where they still export but hold back 1-2 of the products needed to complete.

    1. Well. Now you are mixing everything up a bit. Batteries use metals like lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese. China certainly also dominates the market for these, but they are not rare earth metals.
However, rare earth metals (such as dysprosium, terbium, and neodymium) are absolutely crucial for making extremely strong permanent magnets which are used in PMSM (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor).
China has, by the way, long ago restricted exports to Japan, which is therefore much better equipped than both the EU and the USA.
They have built up their own supply chains.
As a side note, it can be mentioned that Renault has consistently used EESM (Electrically Excited Synchronous Motor) WITHOUT permanent magnets and is therefore not as vulnerable.

      1. The same with the Nissan Arya, like regular separately magnetized synchronous motors. They also have higher efficiency at certain speeds when the magnetization is adjusted as needed.

    1. China began restricting exports of rare earth metals to Japan for the first time in September 2010.
This occurred after a serious diplomatic incident at the Japanese Senkaku Islands, which China claims. A Chinese fishing boat collided with a Japanese coast guard vessel, and Japan arrested the Chinese captain.

  20. ”The plan could have advanced the positions for modern warfare. When Volodymyr Zelenskyy heard the idea of AI-bombing Moscow’s airports, he put a stop to it. But according to military drone expert Johan Huovinen, it is only a matter of time before autonomous AI drones are deployed.

Sometime earlier this year, military advisors presented the idea to Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelenskyy: a swarm of a thousand AI-controlled drones would be sent against Moscow’s airports. There they would bomb and paralyze air traffic in and out of the Russian capital. This, the president’s advisors thought, would eventually force Vladimir Putin to the negotiating table.

The plan, if it ever existed as The Atlantic’s sources describe it, was never carried out. Zelenskyy is said to have stopped it in July because it was considered controversial and associated with great risks. Anonymous officials at Ukraine’s presidential office have denied the reports about the plan.
”I think they would manage it”

But that Ukraine, now with great expertise in drone warfare, could carry out such an operation seems likely, says drone expert Johan Huovinen, military instructor at the Swedish Defence University.

    – I think it would be possible to generate a drone swarm of a thousand drones. We saw the Spiderweb attack where Russian bombers were attacked, but those drones had a short range. However, Ukraine has already carried out attacks with 500–600 drones inside Russia, says Huovinen.

    – You just decide to produce that kind of drones, and Ukraine can manage that now. They have gained breadth over the past year, now they have a production of 25 different variants to choose from.

One of the reasons Zelenskyy is said to have stopped the plan, codenamed ”M&Ms”, was the fear that the drones might accidentally hit civilian targets at Moscow’s airports – passengers and civilian aircraft. Huovinen points out that several of the planes operating in Moscow may have connections to or owners in the West, which would reflect negatively on Kiev.

But also the fact that fully AI-controlled drones, with the potential capacity to make their own decisions about attacking, have never been used in active combat seems to have contributed to the plan being scrapped, according to The Atlantic’s sources.
    – No one has used AI in that way yet. If you want to be the first to carry out an attack, you probably want to be sure that the function really works. The risk is that you cause damage to things you don’t want to be damaged, says Johan Huovinen.

”Ukraine has some kind of AI”

Ukraine, he says, has been quite restrictive so as not to be accused of terror bombings.

    – They often choose the Russian oil industry, which is located far away where few people live. Even the warehouses of the e-commerce company Wildberries that have been attacked are often located where people do not live. The Russians instead choose to attack electricity, water, heating. You can imagine what would happen if someone attacked the electricity company Stockholm Exergi, for example, it is located right in the residential area Hjorthagen, Huovinen notes.

According to him, Ukraine already uses AI technology in drone attacks today, but mainly to select the right kind of targets.

    – We see that Ukraine uses some kind of AI function on medium-range drones, they, for example, hunt trucks. But they don’t want to take just any trucks, they want to take those related to oil.

However, there are plenty of news reports that not only Ukraine but also, among others, the American defense industry is developing more or less autonomous AI-led combat systems.

For Ukraine, it may be the development costs that stand in the way, but also the risk that AI drones go rogue and shoot incorrectly.

    – I would say that at the front in the trenches, the concern is about shooting your own troops. When it comes to long range – it is still costly to carry out, says Johan Huovinen.

Is it a matter of time before we see autonomous AI drones on the battlefield in Ukraine and Russia?

    – Absolutely. What holds it back is the money, that there is still a large cost. But I think within maybe six months we will surely be there.”
