Massive attack on Kyiv
When Ukraine attacks legitimate targets, Russia responds as usual with cowardly attacks mainly aimed at civilians. During the night, they once again attacked Kyiv and its surroundings with ballistic missiles, and this morning reports indicate 15 dead and 51 injured, but the numbers will likely be adjusted upwards during the day. Several residential buildings and also warehouses were hit, and several fires broke out in one of the worst attacks so far.

Ukraine has once again struck a Wildberries warehouse
Ukraine in turn once again attacked one of Wildberries’ warehouses in Aleksin in the Tula region. The warehouse is one of Wildberries’ largest, covering an area of 194,500 square meters. This time, Tula’s governor actually confirmed that the warehouse was hit without blaming debris. He also reports that two industrial facilities and two residential buildings were attacked. The latter is probably due to debris, however, but of course they must try to make it appear as if Ukraine is as brutal as Russia to downplay the significance of their own attacks on civilians.

Ukraine continues to give Russia a severe beating, but there are still no clear signs that the Russian army is about to collapse. Ukraine has managed to regain some ground, but Russia is still grinding forward, albeit at a slow pace, but they are still advancing.

Great news about how the Ukrainian drone attacks on the e-commerce giant Wildberries’ warehouse primarily aim to destabilize the Russian banking system. Wildberries’ high level of debt means that a potential financial collapse of the company could trigger a broader banking crisis affecting the Russian devils, exposing deeper problems within the sector.

In the past month, about 20 warehouse facilities have burned down in Russia. Almost every other day, “Russia’s Amazon” is now attacked by Ukrainian drones – but the real target is something else.
Small businesses. The big bank. The state budget.
– The Central Bank of Russia has shown that it uses all necessary tools to avoid a financial crisis. But it is becoming increasingly clear that something is wrong with the banks in Russia, says Torbjörn Becker, expert on the Russian economy at the Stockholm School of Economics.
At Wildberries, companies and private individuals can buy almost anything. Even equipment used militarily.
Ukraine’s argument for attacking the company’s warehouses is that they provide equipment used in the war, such as boots, bulletproof vests, drones, and other electronic components.
But the attacks may also have other motives.
Large loans at the state bank
This week, a statement came from Ukrainian sources that the attacks on Wildberries largely aim to pressure the Russian banking system.
It was Denys Shtilierman, co-founder of the company Fire Point, which produces attack drones and long-range missiles for Ukraine, who said that Wildberries is one of Russia’s most heavily indebted companies.
If they collapse financially, it could lead to a banking crash in Russia, Shtilierman argues.
The e-commerce company is Russia’s largest. The company itself says it has about 80 million monthly users and handles about 750,000 orders per day.

But they are also highly leveraged. Wildberries itself states, according to the Moscow Times, that it has the equivalent of 100 billion SEK in short-term loan debts. The company’s total debt is estimated to be around 160 billion SEK according to sources at the independent Russian news site The Bell.
And the largest share is with the state Russian bank VTB.
The bank is a close partner of Wildberries, and they own 5 percent of Wildberries Group’s financial branch WB Bank. The collaboration also means that Wildberries and VTB share financial infrastructure, payment systems, and IT solutions. For example, if you have a payment card with VTB, you can get certain discounts at Wildberries. This is reported by Reuters.
But the close ties between the companies also mean that the big bank is affected when Wildberries’ warehouses are bombed by Ukraine.

– If nothing is done, it could become problematic. We are talking about several billion in loans that Wildberries cannot service with VTB. So, of course, it could lead to problems for the entire bank, says Torbjörn Becker.
He explains that there is a rising share of so-called “nonperforming loans” among Russian companies. Loans that are not paid, or are considered unlikely to be repaid.
– Then there is quite a large dark figure. Because loans that go to companies in the military-industrial complex are not reported as nonperforming, even when the companies do not pay, he says.
– So probably the Russian banking system has a fairly high share of such loans that are actually not serviced as they should be, Becker continues.
Small business owners take the hit
Many Russian small business owners sell their products on Wildberries. And when the warehouses burn down, they lose big.
– This can become a bit of a domino effect as an attack not only destroys Wildberries’ warehouse but also hundreds of companies that deliver their goods through their system. It creates ripple effects that can be difficult to manage, says Torbjörn Becker.

Timur, a Russian entrepreneur who sells clothes via Wildberries, told the New York Times earlier in July that he lost products worth nearly 500,000 SEK in one day due to the fires caused by the Ukrainian drone attacks.
Another small business owner, Inna Marchenko, who sells pet food via Wildberries, told Reuters that she lost the equivalent of 190,000 SEK due to the attacks.
Wildberries’ CEO has promised to pay compensation to small business owners affected by the Ukrainian attacks, but Inna Marchenko says the small compensation she received was about 900 SEK.
May need help from the state
A source to Reuters with insight into Wildberries says that the company is in a “difficult situation” and may need to seek help from the Russian state.
Tatyana Kim, the company’s CEO and Russia’s richest woman, is said to have been in contact with authorities regarding possible support measures for Wildberries and the companies that sell their products on the platform.
According to Reuters sources, the discussion concerns possible support in the form of new loans from state banks like VTB, subsidies, or tax relief.

– Discussions have been raised about the possibilities for VTB to support our partner Wildberries in light of these negative events. Should we receive such a request, we will of course be open to various solutions, says VTB’s deputy CEO Dmitry Pyanov, according to Reuters.
Torbjörn Becker emphasizes that all banking systems fundamentally rest on trust. People must trust that they will get back the money they deposit.
He believes that the Russian central bank will solve the situation by introducing various restrictions and regulations on how to account for loans that are not properly serviced.
– And then you get the money needed to maintain liquidity. Whether that is enough to maintain trust in the banking system. We do not know yet.
Can the Russian state afford that?
– Sure, the state can always afford it in the sense that it can prioritize away other things. But this is not pocket change. We are talking about significant amounts for the Russian state budget.
If it also causes ripple effects so that other companies and banks are dragged along – as during the 2008 financial crisis, the cup may overflow.
– It starts in one place and then spreads. Bailouts for banking systems could cost 25 to 30 percent of GDP for some countries. Russia absolutely does not have those margins.”
