13 dead and 86 injured after Russian terror attacks – Ukraine has attacked an oil refinery in Krasnodar Krai – Russian losses

Massive Russian attack on Ukraine with missiles and drones

Ukraine’s Air Force issued a warning for ballistic missiles at 02:35 last night and an hour later they arrived in Kyiv.
The Russian missiles killed at least 13 civilians including a child and injured at least 86 people during the attacks targeting several of Ukraine’s major cities, with residential areas in Kyiv, Dnipro, and Odessa hardest hit by the attack. Russia used not only missiles but later in the morning, while rescue operations were ongoing, another extensive drone attack was carried out. Read more here and here.

Ukraine attacked the oil refinery in the city of Tuapse

Ukrainian drones attacked the oil refinery in the city of Tuapse in Krasnodar Krai in southern Russia. According to eyewitnesses, explosions were heard from the refineries and three fuel tanks are reported to have been hit. The mayor reportedly said that facilities at the port were also hit by “drone debris.” There are also reported damages to residences and civilians are claimed to have been killed. Since these are official Russian reports, the accuracy is somewhat uncertain. Read more here, and video is available here

Russian losses in Ukraine

High Russian losses of personnel, artillery, and soft vehicles as well as 20 cruise missiles. UAV losses are exactly at the average since the beginning of the year but still low compared to what it has been since March when the average was closer to 2000/day.

Today’s report on Russian losses in Ukraine:

  • 1100 KWIA
  • 2 Tanks
  • 1 AFV
  • 43 Artillery systems
  • 2 MLRS
  • 1 Air defense system
  • 1357 UAVs
  • 20 Cruise missiles
  • 208 Vehicles and Fuel tanks
  • 1 Special equipment

    Front attacks (AFU):

    Unlocalized 58↘️/Sum sectors 95↘️ = 0.61↗️

That is, for every three Russian attacks, almost two Ukrainian. A ratio that is among the higher ones.

Together with Pokrovsk at 22:00 having 33 attacks (out of approx. 132) and 61 KWiA, extrapolated (at 22:00 corresponds to about 2/3 of the day’s attacks and the same KWiA/attack on all fronts), about 500 KWiA for the morning’s localized attacks. That is, more than half of the KWiA came from unlocalized attacks. An indication these are Ukrainian attacks since the number of attacks on all fronts except Pokrovsk was so low that it is unlikely that an additional 58 attacks were missed to be localized.

    1. ~38% unlocalized, quite high. I usually don’t calculate the exact percentage but if someone were to wake me up in the middle of the night and ask, I would guess around 1/3.

Edit: Read your (205) comment to Johan further down and realize that I was a bit too quick and didn’t read your text properly

    1. They are supposed to be two completely different ones.

Bashkortostan is a bit strange because it is described in most places as being a petrochemical industry, but a refinery can actually also be classified as that depending on what they produce.
But unfortunately, I actually think it was specifically the question of petrochemical industry and not an oil refinery.

  1. Is the ground in Ukraine now suitable for mechanized combat in the terrain?

Russian deaths during the RU offensive💥💥💥

    and then UA increases.

and NO ONE will stop UA this year.

Now you will see how it would have gone already in 2022 if the USA and Europe had not actively supported RU.

  2. The amount of threats and hate for wanting to promote the site with a world-leading AI was tough.

The old guy went all out and made fun of poor Kuwait, which is being bombed to ruins where children sit on the street crying without breakfast.

That’s why today I’m going to build my very own AI this morning that writes my comments 👍

    1. What if I have already downloaded all your yellow walls from Cornu and trained an AI on that material so that you are actually my AI and now you think you are a human who has realized that you should build your own AI? 😂

    1. No not up but not as much down as localized. That is, the proportion of unlocalized/localized has increased as I described above: per three Russian two Ukrainian attacks. A high proportion achieved few occasions, and the number fairly in itself and explains the high KWiA in today’s row, despite a modest number of localized attacks.

    1. Have also thought about him and wondered if something has happened, or if he finally decided that enough is enough and went home. Or maybe they have become very tough there so that he doesn’t dare to write.

  3. ”Since these are official Russian figures, the truthfulness is somewhat uncertain.”

    Yes, that was a formulation.

    What do you call that?
Euphemism? Sounds a bit too mild.

    Sarcasm? Doesn’t sound precise enough.

    Understatement? Nah.

Typical Russian lie? Too straightforward and precise to provoke a smile.

    1. 96.5% of the drones shot down, a record? If they continue like this, I think the Russians should get tired or they are just saving up even more, but as long as Ukraine can have enough interceptor drones at each location, more shouldn’t mean more difficulty (unless some radar gets overloaded).

      1. It is fortunate that they are getting better and better.
Although they increase the proportion of shot down ones, there are more now.
Good that Russia does not seem to be able to produce so many missiles anyway, they are the hardest to shoot down and cause terrible damage.

  4. Iran
“The Iran war has caused damage to energy infrastructure in the region worth 58 billion dollars, equivalent to approximately 530 billion kronor, writes CNBC.

Iran has attacked and damaged production facilities, refineries, and pipelines in its neighboring countries. Israel has bombed natural gas and petrochemical facilities in Iran, writes CNBC.

    – It may take as long as two years to repair facilities and restore oil and gas production to pre-war levels, says Fatih Birol, executive director of the IEA.”

    1. Australia

Not exactly Iran but will of course likely affect fuel prices if they are forced to import.

“An oil refinery in Geelong, Australia is on fire, reports ABC News. The fire is believed to have been caused by a leak of liquid hydrocarbons and despite eight hours having passed, the fire is not under control.

Several small explosions have reportedly been heard from the site.

The refinery in Geelong is one of two in the country that can produce gasoline from crude oil. Deliveries from the refineries have been in focus recently due to the Iran war, which has pressured oil transports globally.”

    1. From what could be read from the article before the paywall kicked in, in my opinion, it is an attention-seeking pessimist who is selling his defeatist reasoning and hoping to sell a few more books in the process.
According to the German, it mostly seems like everything is lost and it’s just as well to lie down and die.
Why are such defeatist entrepreneurs and academic posers given any attention at all?
I also think of people like Merscheimer. A person who should either be completely consigned to the room of oblivion or, even better, helped to a quick end.

  5. Northern Luhansk is starting to get interesting now, but I assume that RU can quickly reinforce from the northern front if things get tight?

However, the units have to get there in a drone-saturated battlefield.

What we are seeing now are local counteroffensives still paired with RU’s own worthless offensive.

A broader UA offensive has not started yet – but it will, rest assured.

  6. Thailand has had the audacity to use their JAS planes (which they bought for a lot of money) in a minor war against Cambodia.

What is worse is an unconfirmed rumor that a tank Sweden delivered to Ukraine has been used against attacking Russian troops. Amnesty is involved, heads will roll.

    1. That was the boldest thing! The UN, the European Court of Human Rights, the crispbread village consumer association, and Inga-Britt’s sewing circle and world political discussion forum must immediately be mobilized to draft a sulfurous communiqué. Weapons are only meant to be displayed as examples of what can happen if every authority and organization does not have at least 45% gender studies experts and 50% international law lawyers employed for practical conflict resolution.
Let the cries ring out, Gudrun Schyman for president!
      Pierre, Pierre where aare youu?

      1. Yes, indeed, and it is really about time that a license is required to buy cutlery. Think of the children for God’s sake. THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!

    2. We only sell weapons if it can be guaranteed that they are not needed and will not be used. Therefore, it would probably be smarter for us to sell replicas with a 50 percent discount. Talk about a win-win for both Swedish sellers and the buyer.

  7. US Politics / Iran

“More and more Republicans are worried that the ongoing Iran war is destroying all chances of retaining a majority in Congress in the upcoming midterm elections in the US, writes CNN.

According to a number of Republican sources, the war is unpopular and has led to increasing costs for ordinary Americans, which they say is the exact opposite of what the party needs right now.

    – We need to go on the offensive. We need a message. But right now everything is on hold until the war is over, says an anonymous Trump advisor to CNN.

Polls already suggest that the Republicans are heading for a significant loss and may lose control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

    – Everything becomes more difficult because of the nonsense coming from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, says another anonymous Republican to Politico, referring to the White House address.”

          1. 100% tariff on American wine and American crackers to the Vatican. I honestly think they can manage fairly well anyway… (presumably they are self-sufficient in that, the incense and whatever they use for the last anointing).

  8. “Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy writes on X that Russia does not deserve to have sanctions lifted. The statement comes after last night’s attacks on Ukraine, where 16 people died and 100 were injured.

He further writes that Russia is betting on war and therefore Ukraine must also fight.

“We must defend lives by all available means,” he continues.

Ukraine’s air defense states that 659 drones were shot by Russia in the attacks and that they have shot down 636 of them.”

  9. @johan no.1 how has the front changed since Christmas, what are the most significant changes. Use 500 words.

    illustrate with pictures. 👍

        1. If I give Johan free access to tokens, I will be ruined. He starts an endless loop where he generates virtual chips that he then imagines he is eating. Completely hopeless!😂

          Jokes aside.

If you want to do something more advanced, there are no fixed subscriptions; instead, you pay for usage, and then it is based on input and output, so the instructions you give cost, and the response you get costs depending on how much text there is (or images/video, etc.).

A bit of a funny payment model. You can write a short question that generates a short answer, then the AI can work itself to death to come up with the answer and it still ends up cheap.
If you input a long text that just needs to be translated (which today is easy for AI), it instead becomes expensive.

I suspect that other ways of charging will be found eventually. Maybe it will be directly linked to electricity consumption.

  10. OT: Iran

    Christer Sfeir on X:

”Tehran announces that it is extending distance learning for all educational levels until further notice. This is happening at the same time as the internet is down, which says less about school policy and more about the regime’s need to maintain a facade of normality. It is a classic authoritarian tactic: if reality doesn’t work, change the language until it looks like it does…”

  11. Lebanon

    Aimen Dean on X:

”Lebanon’s President Aoun was set to take a call with President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu, today in the middle of a war, for what was presumably ceasefire diplomacy.

And he’s being threatened – with talk of civil war, no less – by Hezbollah, cheered on as usual by Lebanon’s Parliament speaker, and immortal vampire, Nabih Berri.

Just think about that for a second.

A head of state who can’t even take a diplomatic call without asking permission from an armed terror faction that claims to “defend” the country when in fact it is doing Iranian regime’s bidding.

At that point, what exactly is left of sovereignty?

And of course, this dysfunction doesn’t come out of nowhere. It fits perfectly into the Iranian playbook: stall, intimidate, and use Lebanon as leverage while buying time with the Trump administration.

    This isn’t 3D chess.

    It’s 3D BS”

Russia 🇷🇺 warns US 🇺🇸 , Israel 🇮🇱 may be preparing Iran ground operation under cover of ceasefire talks —— Russia’s Security Council said the United States and Israel could be using negotiations as cover, stating that “the United States and Israel can use the peace talks to prepare for a ground operation against Iran, as the Pentagon continues to increase US troop numbers in the region,” pointing to a major military buildup.

According to the statement, over 50,000 US troops are deployed, including 2,500 marines, more than 1,200 from the 82nd Airborne Division, Delta forces, and the 75th Ranger Regiment, alongside around 500 US Air Force aircraft (over 250 tactical) and more than 20 US Navy ships positioned near Iran. The council added that further escalation is likely, with continued deployments, weapons resupply, and increased intelligence activity expected as the truce deadline approaches.

  13. Russia threatens attacks on drone factories in 12 countries – the United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Denmark, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Spain, Italy, Israel, and Turkey – that supply drones to Ukraine, calling this a “deliberate escalation.”

“[USA🇺🇸] has gotten what [they] deserve. Iran holds the bullets in an iron grip, Netanyahu holds tightly to the ear, the pope and Meloni kick in the kneecaps. It will be interesting to see how long [USA] stands up.”

  15. Israel – Lebanon “Israel and Lebanon are starting a ten-day ceasefire tonight. This was announced by US President Donald Trump on Truth Social.

He also writes that the countries will meet in Washington next Tuesday.

    – I have tasked Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Rubio, together with Defense Chief Dan Caine, to work with Israel and Lebanon to achieve a lasting peace, writes Trump.

The ceasefire begins at 11:00 PM Swedish time.”

    1. One can hope Hizbolla is involved in this as well, they are the reason Israel is bombing there.

Lebanon probably wants Hizbolla thrown out, as they only cause problems. However, it is now starting to become a bit too much collateral damage as Israel is in the process of making a Gaza out of southern Beirut.

Now Trump didn’t mention Hizbolla at all in his tweet, so it is probably quite uncertain, but one of Iran’s demands in the peace negotiations is that Israel stops bombing Hizbolla, so that is probably a step in the right direction.

      1. Only Hizbolla can they otherwise bomb.

Jokes aside, it would of course be best if they could achieve a ceasefire that hopefully can lead to a continued de-escalation further on.

  16. Off-topic, IT

Microsoft buys Apple, or vice versa? Or Google buys Microsoft or the other way around?

What is clear is that with Microsoft’s discontinuation of Windows Phone today, it largely lacks its own mobile platform for its software, whether it is AI or Word. More and more people are abandoning computers in favor of mobile devices. This must be a concern at headquarters in Redmond.

    • The consumer market has essentially tipped over.
    • Productivity work, however, is more persistent. Coding, document editing, advanced analysis — keyboard, screen space, and file system access remain difficult to replace.
    • But “mobile” and “computer” are beginning to converge rather than one replacing the other. Apple Silicon in iPhone and iPad shares architecture with Mac. Qualcomm Snapdragon X in Windows laptops is basically a grown-up mobile chip. The boundary is blurring on the hardware side.
    • UI paradigms designed for mobile (touch-first, limited multitasking, sandboxed apps) now compete with desktop paradigms that historically assumed mouse and keyboard.
    1. Yes, the “mobile chips” will probably take over both the home market and office computers,
More and more people are using laptops even at the office with docking stations.

Even in the server market, they are looking at ARM chips since they are energy-efficient (the cost of electricity is only getting higher and higher, and then cooling is the biggest expense, but with more efficient chips you save money in two ways).

It is probably AI and gaming that go in the other direction, but there it is the AI and graphics chips that are becoming increasingly power-hungry, so CPUs are not quite as important.

NVIDIA’s most powerful consumer graphics card draws 600W, enough to easily heat a room during winter.

Then I don’t know if touch will fully catch on for pure work purposes. It has actually existed for a long time but hasn’t really taken off. After all, it is mostly ergonomic with a real keyboard and mouse. I used Microsoft’s first generation of Surface Pro (the small portable one) from 2013 quite a bit.

It had a poor touchpad so it was mouse and real keyboard, but some tasks still worked best with touch, like scrolling through long websites, but otherwise touch was really wasted. I ended up only using it when I had customer meetings.

      1. I have found fewer and fewer applications where I need to open a laptop and can just as well do it on the mobile. The spreadsheet with losses of about a hundred rows and a dozen tabs (mostly using one first) I have the possibility to work on both mobile and computer but have never so far opened it on a laptop. It almost feels more cumbersome to handle communication on the computer in some cases. The emails have strangely become more troublesome on the mobile when at least Gmail clusters messages with the same subject so that neither I nor the recipient can find them anymore. There the computer is a help if you want to print out a thread to in a way get an overview of the thread. But that is more a software error in the GUI than a hardware interface issue.

I was also puzzled by the touchscreen function on the Surface. However, the Surface could have insanely good performance and with a dock, mouse, and screen worked like any high-performance laptop. But as I said, I have so far only used the touchscreen on the mobile.

  17. Uh, now I got FORBIDDEN when I tried to look at my own notifications on Bluesky.

Then I installed a server today, it was slow as molasses there as well when the updates were downloading.
Had to change the repository to make it bearable.

      1. Well, it could have been something like that (though not from my side), or some other trouble like DNS issues or similar, when things go wrong like that, all sorts of oddities can occur that can also be difficult to detect.

    1. Sorry, couldn’t take it anymore when Charlie portrayed the Sweden Democrats as the knight in shining armor who has made the Swedish people happy again and feel hopeful about the future, and not only that, they have also managed to restore trust in the ruling politicians because they have listened to the people. (Freely from my goldfish memory).

The Media Academy conducts surveys and it looks like this:

In the 2022 survey about hope for the future, 47 percent thought Sweden was on the right track. In the 2026 survey, it was 33 percent.

For the government, trust was at 50 percent in 2022 and 40 percent in 2026.

Trust in political parties was at 25 percent in 2022 and 19 percent in 2026.
