During the night, Ukraine carried out a large-scale drone attack on Moscow. So far, there are not many reports on the outcome, but among other things, an oil depot in Durykino was hit and appears to be burning well, see the post on BlueSky here. There are also reports that a drone hit a residential building in Moscow and that three civilians were killed, read more at Kyiv Independent (which also mentions attacks on Crimea). Ukraine normally does not attack residential buildings, so it is likely due to interference or some other technical fault.
Russian losses in Ukraine
Today’s report shows that Russian losses were extensive. It was, however, not very high losses of KWIA nor of armor, but otherwise a well-filled list with a lot of artillery and soft vehicles, but also both MLRS and air defense as well as five special equipment.
- 1170 KWIA
- 1 Tank
- 4 AFVs
- 82 Artillery systems
- 2 MLRS
- 3 air defense systems
- 2131 UAVs
- 13 UGVs
- 325 Vehicles & fuel tanks
- 5 Special equipment 2 Cruise missiles

Report from Ukraine’s General Staff
Regarding combat clashes, we have been able to establish that the probability is quite high that it also includes Ukrainian attacks, so I have changed the heading, but the other points we know refer to Russian activities.
- 234 combat clashes
- 95 aviation strikes
- 300 KAB/CAB
- 9,645 kamikaze drones
- 3,305 shells (74 from MLRS)

It is now unclear whether the cruise missiles are included in the total, but they took down 97% and that is really good.
If it continues and almost all are taken down by drones or jammed, it soon shouldn’t be worth it for RU to send them out. Then we are back to ballistic things that are harder and more expensive to shoot down.
Of course, RU will adjust tactics and develop the drones, so setbacks will come. They also occupy the Ukrainian defense, but the trend feels positive!
The trend feels clearly positive. Agree 💯

Sweden was “completely overrun” by the Ukrainian forces during a drone exercise in connection with the military exercise Aurora 26, admits Defense Minister Pål Jonson (M) on TV4 Nyhetsmorgon.
But that the exercise was somewhat of a wake-up call was only good, the minister believes.
– We are deeply grateful, here are units from Ukraine who are at the front that came to Sweden and trained with tough and demanding exercises. It is absolutely right that they were demanding.

If Mjällby had faced Arsenal in early January and lost 6-0, no one would have reacted. Perhaps someone would have said that Arsenal is in the middle of their season, have the pace in their bodies, are well-trained and coordinated, while Mjällby has just started their training after the winter break. Or would people have thought it was a disaster to lose 6-0? The audience and journalists would have completely taken away all honor and glory from the team. Much like the drone scolding. The defense must be allowed to train!
Yes, the point was probably exactly to practice, so I agree, but at the same time it is probably good anyway that it is highlighted so that it is taken seriously.
The most important thing is to learn from the experiences and not to shift the blame.
But I do believe that the armed forces and those who need to understand it also realize that.
The problem is probably mostly the “armchair experts” on social media who do not want to admit that we are still not ready to face those who are professionals in drone warfare.
I think that Pål Jonsson has a sober view of the whole thing.
Agree!
As Proximity writes, the defense must get to practice. Sometimes you just need to refresh things that have been learned before, other times learn something completely new. And from the military, we know to repeat, repeat to the point of obsession. The pedagogy is just a veneer.
12-year-old Anatoliy Prokhorenko was sitting in the neighbor’s pear tree in Chernihiv, Ukraine, one evening in April when he suddenly heard the familiar buzz of a drone, writes the Washington Post. Despite his young age, the 12-year-old has been taught how to act during a drone attack. When he saw the drone targeting the street where his three siblings were playing, he acted lightning fast.
When he caught up with the drone, he did as the soldier had taught him: He made a loop with his fingers around the fiber optic wire hanging down from the drone, counted to ten, and pulled. The wire snapped, and the drone quickly turned upward and disappeared.
– I was expecting an explosion, but it never came.
Instead, it landed in a swamp a little way off.
In Ukraine, the 12-year-old has been hailed as a hero after the incident, but he has also become a target for Russian war bloggers. According to the Washington Post, the family has been forced to leave their home.
https://omni.se/a/3pq0rq

Exciting. Gradually, often after the end of the offensive (that was the case in October, see yesterday’s thread on the subject), the General Staff usually releases a report. Until then, nothing is confirmed, unless DeepState, which presumably coordinates with the General Staff.
Well, they usually lag behind. For a while, it was only a few days, but nowadays I think they have been waiting for approval before publishing. It will be interesting to see if suddenly there are major changes appearing on the map. Greyskull and others have occasionally reported progress without it being visible in the near term. I haven’t kept track of how accurate that has been later on, as I haven’t really had the energy to follow (and follow up) that closely.

The past few months, Ukraine has been able to make military advances on Crimea, annexed by Russia. Several military experts assess that the peninsula may be on its way to being cut off from the occupied Donbass region, reports DN.
Among other things, Ukraine can “unhindered” steer drones along the R-150 highway near Mariupol, which is important for Russian logistics.

Only the shot-down parts cause damage. 100% of them are shot down, but unfortunately the wreckage always ends up on something flammable. Really bad luck, actually.
Your text also indicates that they shoot down more than Ukraine sends, i.e., over 100%! Soon the same numbers Saddam Hussein had in some election.
Actually, I don’t know how many they have really sent, but over a thousand sounds like a lot. Otherwise, we have heard the Russians exaggerate before; they shot down more F-16s and destroyed more Leopard tanks than Ukraine had even received earlier in the war.

Sources: Cuba buys combat drones – reportedly planning attack
Cuba has recently purchased over 300 combat drones and is reportedly discussing plans to use them to attack the American base in Guantanamo Bay, American military ships, and possibly Key West in Florida, reports Axios citing classified intelligence information.
– It is a growing threat, says a U.S. official to Axios.
According to American sources, Cuba has purchased combat drones with various capabilities from Russia and Iran since 2023. A U.S. official further states, citing intercepted intelligence, that Cuban security services have tried to find out “how Iran has stood up to us.”
Another aspect of this “leak” of classified information is that the American administration is preparing the ground for an invasion or other Chinese actions against Cuba.
They are simply looking for a casus belli to sell to the American public now that the blitzkrieg against Iran has turned into a war of attrition.
The Republicans and Trump feel they need a victory ahead of the midterm elections this fall.
And NO, I have absolutely no sympathies for either the regime in Cuba or in Iran.
This strengthens Johan’s thesis that the USA is strengthening and consolidating its power in South and Central America and has begun to relinquish its interests in other parts of the world.
The question now is whether Europe will fill the power vacuum in our part of the world quickly and forcefully enough.
The question is who will back up Taiwan now.
I believe that 2 to 4 new nuclear powers will emerge in Asia, and that within a not too distant future.
Likewise, I believe that Brazil will both deepen and strengthen its relationship with Europe and also consider becoming a nuclear power.
The risk for future American administrations is that the country’s influence will have diminished more than it needed to, and it will be very difficult for them to repair and rebuild the relationship with their traditional allies. This is partly because new alliances and collaborations have emerged and partly because trust and confidence are easy to destroy and then much harder to build up.
VERY suspicious!
I also believe that trust in the USA will be damaged for a long time to come, not only within Europe but in most parts of the world.
Trump ran on “America first,” saying there would be involvement in some wars and prices would be halved and inflation would go down. He also promised to reduce the national debt.
He did promise high tariffs and he has implemented them, but he also promised that this would solve all economic problems because it would bring in so much money. It has not delivered a fraction of what he expected, and he has also been forced to refund some of the tariffs.
Instead, it has disturbed relations with all trade partners who are looking for other suppliers.
The war in Iran appears as a spontaneous botched job without a clear goal and without coordinating with any other partners, and now it is negatively affecting the global economy.
There is a risk that China will ultimately be the biggest winner in this, but I hope the EU manages to play its cards right and can strengthen its positions.
I hardly believe that a “victory” against Cuba will strengthen his position among Americans, nor internationally. Cuba’s regime is, of course, deplorable, but the country poses no real threat to other countries. If it becomes a full-scale war, he will hardly gain any sympathies.
Now, I don’t think that is what he is after either. The indictment they are preparing ( https://omni.se/kallor-usa-forbereder-atal-mot-kubas-raul-castro/a/zOMyBq ) will probably only be used to put political pressure on Cuba, and when they refuse to hand him over, they will use it to justify further sanctions to force Cuba to do as they want.
Then maybe Cuba will actually cause trouble for itself so that a full war breaks out, but I hope we will be spared from seeing that.
Most likely, yes.
Although Cuba’s regime surely wants the US to disappear, they are hardly suicidal; I find it hard to believe they would attack first, but I can understand them having weapons for defense, since the likelihood of the US attacking is close to 100% as soon as they get free from Iran and Trump’s regime remains in power.
Cuba is used to being blockaded by the US, but the latest blockade has stopped energy supplies to Cuba, so now they only have electricity 2 hours a day.
I would argue that this blockade, if it continues, is a crime against humanity. Even the UN has quietly condemned the energy blockade.
UN experts condemn US executive order imposing fuel blockade on Cuba | OHCHR
Unfortunately, the UN is toothless, so it is nothing the US cares about, but if you are without energy, you are also without drinking water supply, sewage treatment, food refrigeration, electricity for hospitals, cooling of buildings, media and communication, etc. In addition, you need oil for all kinds of transportation. For cooking and heating, you can burn wood, but not in the high-rise buildings in the city.
Surprisingly little about this in the media, really.
Cuba has run out of diesel and fuel oil, energy minister says, as US blockade pushes island to brink | Cuba | The Guardian
The US talks about considering aid shipments, but also about regime change, so they will surely let the Cubans die and blame everything on the communist regime, which does not allow Trump to take over the island.
Now I do think it is time for the communist regime to step down; communism has not been of any benefit to the Cuban people, not in the last 50 years at least. But at the same time, I think the US could have chosen another way to convert the Cubans, but threatening and blackmailing is all they can do.
Attempt at casus belli if I ever saw one 😐
Fatty before
“Haha”.. The Simpsons reference….
But that Russia sells military equipment to countries that the USA is conducting 🇮🇷, has conducted 🇻🇪, or plans to conduct 🇨🇺 war against is not seen as a problem?
No, no, Russia is just doing what is good for them, you can’t blame them for that! *irony*
Venezuela and Cuba are similar in the sense of weapons from Iran and Russia. There are those who want to make Venezuela about one thing only: oil money to Trump’s family. But it was about more than that. And that is exactly what this leak is about. And as in the case of Venezuela, a war against Cuba is a war against Russia. And it benefits Europe, regardless of any collateral money to Trump. In fact, Trump’s economic gains may be directly proportional to European security. Win-win.
There was some talk a while ago about Trump saying something about taking back the oil that Venezuela stole from them, and then selling it at market price with the money being managed by Trump himself, who would then invest it in Venezuela. I wonder which family owns the companies that get those contracts.
I believe that Venezuela and Cuba are about spheres of influence, China and Russia have to go, and that is something they have a silent agreement about. No strong reactions from either Russia or China. Venezuela has probably served as a hub for drug smuggling, so that is likely part of the motive, but not everything.
One should not forget that Venezuela had (has?) Hezbollah training on some island. Hezbollah is controlled by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.
Iran are experts at money laundering and have therefore gained significant influence in South America. In return, Iran receives large sums that every 12th imam supporter is supposed to pay. These sums are larger than what Iran earns from oil.
Cuba is probably closest to being an economic burden for Russia, which sells subsidized oil and basically provides them with weapons to keep them within its geopolitical sphere.
They wrote off a huge debt they had to the Soviet Union, and the trade amounts to a few hundred million dollars per year.
Sure, quite a few Russians go there on vacation and will be sad, but losing Cuba will not affect Russia significantly except politically.
Venezuela was a bit different because they at least had oil to pay with, but even there the trade was quite small (a few hundred million dollars more than Cuba).
However, Russia had invested long-term there, and they obviously risk losing those investments (although so far there has been no indication that they have actually lost anything, the US seems only to have made agreements, not ensured that Russia was expelled).
But as said, those investments were long-term, so they have not made any major profit there yet, even though it could have yielded quite a bit in the long run.
One can of course imagine that Russia could retrieve the weapons and weapon systems they sold to both Cuba and Venezuela, but that would hardly be realistic since they sold or gave them away.
The US taking over Venezuela and Cuba currently has no major significance for Russia (on the contrary, they might save money in the short term). Regarding Venezuela, it is of course a potential loss in the longer term due to the oil reserves, so there it is probably an advantage that the US gains control rather than Russia (depending on how the US will act going forward, of course).
I do not believe for a second that the US wants to force control over those countries to weaken Russia and thereby help Europe against Russia. They only look after their own interests and want to govern them themselves.
That it to some extent disadvantages Russia is just a bonus.
But you say that Cuba is not a loss for Russia. How can it then be a gain for the USA?
Economy: 0.
The only reason is security.
We should not forget the Cuban Missile Crisis, should we?
Why is Greenland important for the USA?
Security.
The threat? Russia. Norway’s Prime Minister recently pointed out that they are neighbors with Murmansk where every missile is aimed not at Norway but at the USA.
Støre🇳🇴: “Ten miles from the Norwegian border lie the naval bases on the Kola Peninsula, and there Russia has most of its nuclear submarines, that is, with nuclear weapons. And – as I usually say – the weapons are not really aimed at Norway, but they are part of the balance of power and the threat against the USA. Norway plays an important role for NATO by being what I call ‘eyes and ears in the north’.”
Yes, the USA’s. But it is also a disarming of a Russia and Iran that are being cut off in their geopolitical influence. This geo- and security-political circumcision is in Europe’s interest.
It is mostly a question of prestige/influence and economy. Cuba has nothing economically to offer today and, as mentioned, does not contribute much to Russia, but the USA can certainly exploit Cuba and build Trump resorts.
Security for the USA? What security are we talking about?
Russia has had influence there for a very long time, the risk that they would attack the USA via Venezuela and Cuba is surely no one imagines will happen in the coming decades?
Then I think stopping the drugs is actually a stronger argument.
Greenland is important for the USA because Trump dreams of rare earth metals and he is terrified that Russia or primarily China will instead get a share of it.
Security is just an argument used to legitimize one’s actions.
Russia does not pose a threat to the USA (other than via nuclear weapons and they can launch from Russia). China is on its way to becoming a real threat but hardly because they gain some influence in Venezuela and Cuba, or Greenland. There it is more about generally trying to stop their expansion.
But regardless, it is about the USA’s interests in its neighborhood, that it happens to negatively affect Russia is of course good, but for the USA it would not have mattered if it had been France or some other country that had been the partner.
Greenland is not deeply involved with Russia yet they try to make it seem like they should have control…
Iran, on the other hand, influences both Russia and China on another level (the bonus there is greater).
But I still doubt that the USA started the war because of Russia and China. It probably would not have mattered much if it had instead been India or Brazil that were close partners to Iran.
At least that’s how I see it.
Iran is primarily a threat to the US ally Israel, the stability in the Middle East where the Abraham Accords constituted a step is another reason, and then a lot of the oil comes from this region.
“Greenland is not deeply involved with Russia yet they try to make it seem like they have control…”
Opposite? Both are islands that under foreign power control can pose a threat to the USA. Lex Gotland..
But Gotland is of course about limestone mining..?
If security had been the main focus in Greenland, the US would probably have built more military bases, not shut them down. And the US already has an agreement with Denmark to build new bases in Greenland, which is more or less a carte blanche. So I hardly think security is the first or even second priority.
It has now been said that there might be something similar to Cyprus, where new bases would instead be considered sovereign territory. It has not been revealed what happens in the event of a shutdown. At other US bases around the world, they already have agreements that more or less make US equipment, bases, and personnel sovereign, so why is this necessary?
Here the priority for Trump probably emerges: to plant the flag in the ground and redraw the maps, showing that the US has grown by a few square miles on the margin. And what could be easier than to go after an ally who is completely unprepared for a stab in the back. Et tu, Brute?
It was by no means certain that the revolution in Cuba in 1959 would result in a communist regime. The Soviet Union was not at all involved with Castro and Cuba at that time. The Soviets had, in fact, better contact with Batista. No, it was uncertain how the people would decide their future.
President Kennedy, who after all had a favorable view of Castro, said this: “There has been a reason why Castro was able to take power,” and continued, “We used influence from our government to benefit the private American companies that dominate the island’s economy and increase their profits.” He added that the USA had supported “one of the most bloody and repressive dictatorships (Batista) in the long history of oppression in Latin America.” Batista had turned Cuba into a police state that abolished all individual freedoms. That was Kennedy’s opinion in 1960. Kennedy was also hesitant about the trade embargo that the USA imposed on Cuba. Fidel had good relations with the USA but was eventually forced to turn to the Soviet Union. Source “The Cold War/Gunnar Wall/Semic.”
“Fidel ville ha” should be written above
So then Castro was a reluctant recipient of Soviet nuclear missiles? Still a big step from wanting to have good relations with the USA to becoming a launch pad for missiles aimed at the American neighbor.
Yes, Castro wanted to continue trade with the USA and maintain good relations with the USA. Kennedy was initially cautiously positive but had to give way to the hawks in the Pentagon. With all the failed attempts by the USA to overthrow Castro, his loyalty to Russia eventually became so strong that it developed into a direct confrontation with the USA. The Eastern Bloc countries bought Cuba’s sugar exports. It was a matter of the island’s survival.
Castro said in his old age that the CIA was behind Kennedy’s assassination. At that time, he was wavering about the bombings of North Vietnam. But Castro said, “I have no proof.”
I feel like it’s about time to read that book! 👍
Recommends the book. In these times, it provides a lot of background on all the conflicts after WW2.
It is an interesting hypothesis, Mr. 205.
Can you elaborate on the reasoning about how this can strengthen Europe vis-à-vis the USA and Russia?
Støre
: “Ten miles from the Norwegian border lie the naval bases on the Kola Peninsula, and there Russia has most of its nuclear submarines, that is, with nuclear weapons. That and the fact that Cuba and Greenland are to be regarded as the same threat as Gotland is to the Nordic countries/NATO, but against the USA/NATO if Russia gains control over the area. Greenland is also part of the Golden Dome which Trump initiated first during this term.
Common denominator: NATO.
Well, but in fact, the Russian weapons don’t seem to be anything to be afraid of, at least not the air defense 😀

Around 2010, bourbon and other American whiskey experienced a surge in trendiness. During the pandemic, many Americans turned to the bottle, and sales peaked in 2022. Investment capital was injected and production increased, but in recent years demand has plummeted.
Now 16 million barrels are sloshing around in Kentucky waiting to be sold – a record-sized reserve believed to be enough for ten years.
There are several reasons. Americans are drinking less, especially the younger generation – a trend seen in many countries. Trump’s tariffs have an impact, less hangover-inducing intoxicants like cannabis are gaining ground, and the new obesity drugs are thought to reduce alcohol cravings.”

One barrel every 93 seconds amounts to just under 340,000 barrels per year. Do they have more machines or are the 16 million barrels also from other manufacturers?
“Hit the bottle” sounds like an understatement 😳.
Not just the tariffs, I guess the boycott of American goods also plays a role.
And what are they going to do with all the surplus corn now, they are desperately trying to push it into all sorts of products. Subsidizing corn in the USA is practically socialist.
Har inga större förhoppningar att det blir så mycket av med det här, men tydligen har i alla fall undantaget mot Ryssland (på grund av kriget i Iran) inte förlängts så man vet ju inte. Håller tummarna!
**Sen. Graham: As to Russia, we’re very close to sanctions being passed by Congress that will allow the President to put tariffs and sanctions on the shadow fleet. And any country that buys cheap Russian oil to prop up Putin and doesn’t help Ukraine can be tariffed.**

Europe should be on alert here and offer security to the countries on the African continent, help build the AU, and in this way create stability and conditions for mutual trade exchange, in true Johan spirit.
Off-Topic, Modi’s visit.
Does anyone know what you have to do to earn the Order of the Polar Star?
Risk that this will upset Trump, he has never received the Order of the Polar Star.
Will there be increased tariffs now? Or will he force us to import Jim Bean?
“India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a royal welcome in Gothenburg. During the visit, Crown Princess Victoria presented the Royal Order of the Polar Star to the leader, writes TT.
Modi is also said to have received two previously unknown verses by the Indian Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 but, due to the First World War, could not travel to Stockholm until eight years later. During the visit, he is said to have written two verses that were later found in Sven Hedin’s archive at the National Archives.” https://omni.se/modi-fick-kunglig-orden-och-dikter-av-nobelpristagare/a/ln4RdA
Off-Topic, the war in Iran
2Donald Trump directs a new threat at Iran in a post on Truth Social.
“The clock is ticking for Iran, and they must act quickly, otherwise there will be nothing left of them. Time is running out!” he writes.
Last Friday, aboard Air Force One on the way home from China, the president said he is “losing patience” with Iran.
Peace talks between the countries have once again stalled after Trump called Iran’s latest counteroffer “garbage” and dismissed it. He has also called the ceasefire “incredibly weak.”
The key issue is Iran’s nuclear program. Trump wants it completely dismantled and for the US to take over all the country’s enriched uranium, which Iran refuses.”
