Ukrainian drones attacked the Saratov refinery and a petrochemical industry in Nizhnekamsk, Tatarstan, during the night.
The Saratov refinery belongs to Rosneft and produces about 7 MT/year, approximately 2-3% of Russia’s total annual production. It is not one of the more technologically advanced but manufactures, among other things, gasoline and diesel, and accounts for most of the region’s needs. It is therefore not one of Russia’s largest refineries but neither one of the smallest, and in a country already facing fuel shortages, it is naturally noticeable.
Regarding Nizhnekamsk, social media reports suggest it was an oil refinery that was hit, while Kyiv Independent describes it as a petrochemical facility. The confusion may possibly be due to Nizhnekamsk having a large industrial area housing both refineries and petrochemical plants, so it is probably easy for someone looking at the map to think that everything belongs to one large refinery.
Ukrainians also carried out a major attack on Belgorod, reportedly hitting both the airport and a gas pipeline hub, and according to some reports, also a gas depot, a power plant, and a bridge. Read more at Kyiv Independent. Posting links to social media later as comments.
Unfortunately, Kyiv was again attacked during the night, including by ballistic missiles, which led to two injuries and a fire breaking out. Kyiv Independent.

The number of combat clashes in the past 24 hours was somewhat higher than in yesterday morning’s report from AFU. Mainly an increase from the Ukrainian side, whereby the ratio also rose slightly. The Russians, who overall have not increased their attacks, focused more on Pokrovsk and Huliaipole while pressure decreased in Lyman and Konstantinivka. This is certainly about variations in the individual sectors that are unrelated to each other.

Off-Topic, Wars.. sorry I mean, the ceasefire in Iran.
“USA carries out attacks on Iranian targets in the Strait of Hormuz, the military reports according to Reuters. The military command Centcom states in a statement that ‘powerful attacks’ are a response to Iranian attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
‘Iran’s actions were unprovoked, dangerous, and constitute a clear violation of the ceasefire.’
According to state Iranian media, several explosions have been heard in southern Iran. Loud blasts have also been heard on the island of Qeshm.
A government source tells CNN that the American attacks are not proportionate.
– This is a punishment. It will not be over for a while.
Formally, a ceasefire has been in effect between the USA and Iran since the memorandum of understanding was signed last month, but the parties have repeatedly carried out attacks and accused each other of violating the ceasefire.”
https://omni.se/usa-genomfor-attacker-mot-iran/a/K8GMQ7
“Iran states that it has attacked 85 American targets in Bahrain and Kuwait, Reuters writes.
The attacks come after Iran promised a ‘crushing response’ to the assaults that the USA carried out in the Strait of Hormuz during the night leading into Wednesday. This is reported by the Iranian military headquarters to the state TV company IRIB, according to CNN.
TT reports that Iran has stated that the attacks are seen as a violation of the memorandum of understanding signed between the countries in mid-June.
The over 80 attacks that the USA carried out during the night leading into Wednesday were, according to the American military, directed at, among other things, air defenses. More than 60 boats belonging to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard were also attacked, reports BBC.
The USA, for its part, has stated that the attacks occurred as a response to Iran previously having attacked three transport ships in the Strait of Hormuz.”

“NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte says that the USA’s new attacks on Iran last night were ‘absolutely necessary.’ According to him, Iran first violated the ceasefire through attacks on ships yesterday.
– Then it is absolutely crucial that the USA acts decisively, he says according to AFP.
The USA’s new attacks on Iran are likely to overshadow the rest of NATO’s summit in Turkey, writes CNN. The renewed violence is described as the greatest threat so far to the three-week-long ceasefire.”

So Hormuz is open at least..
Off-Topic, fire risk
Not the time to light any fires for those of you living in the mentioned areas!
(Otherwise it might be needed, after all, we do have Swedish summer!)
“There is an extremely high fire risk in several parts of the country on Wednesday, writes TT with reference to SMHI.
In large parts of northwestern Götaland, the risk is high or very high, and locally extremely high, for fires in forests and land.
There are also warnings in parts of Blekinge, eastern Skåne, southern Öland, eastern Svealand, and parts of Östergötland.”

By the way, I expect that some of you will get upset when the media later does not report that there is no longer any fire risk… 😉
Several loud explosions shook Ukraine’s capital Kyiv during the night leading into Wednesday, reports several media outlets. According to Mayor Vitali Klitschko, the city has been attacked with ballistic missiles and at least two people are reported to have been injured, writes TT.
AFP reporters on site state that the first powerful explosion was heard before the city’s air raid sirens began to sound.
After that, several loud bangs were heard. By midnight, at least one warehouse and another building had caught fire as a result of the attacks.

“On his first day at the NATO summit in Turkey, Donald Trump’s message to NATO was that he does not care as much about the alliance as the alliance cares about him. That is what SR correspondent Ginna Lindberg says.
She notes that Trump did not rule out withdrawing American soldiers from Europe and that he once again directed harsh criticism at several member countries.
– Trump delivered bitter news to NATO.
The atmosphere at the meeting is tense, and the European leaders hope to leave Turkey in a couple of days without any major conflicts in their baggage, write CNN’s Kevin Liptak and Kristen Holmes. They note that NATO’s Secretary General has done what he can to calm Trump’s anger.
“Mark Rutte […] tried to soften the president’s hostile attitude by showing a chart that shows how European defense spending has increased,” they write.
Deborah Haynes at Sky News also notes that Mark Rutte tried to gloss over the internal divisions in Turkey. In World Cup times, the NATO chief called the alliance “one big team,” she says.
– But it is impossible to avoid the fact that one of the players has a red card in their hand. Allies will do everything they can to keep Trump on their side.”

The Russian stock index MOLEX continues to decline, but maybe it will recover a bit if oil prices rise again as the ceasefire in Iran faces setbacks.
Or wait, maybe it will be the opposite. Russia now has to import fuel, so that should lead to their imports becoming more expensive.. 😂
There are quite a few smaller refineries east of Omsk, but most are fairly small or medium-sized. However, one of Russia’s larger ones is in Angarsk (Angarsk Petrochemical Corporation), which produces 10-11MT/year. It is located about 2,000 km east of Omsk.
Now, no one really thought Ukraine would reach Omsk a couple of years ago, but I think they will have trouble reaching this area, though you can never be sure.
Good move here today. Thanks MXT for several uplifting news from Ukraine and unfortunately some less uplifting ones.
SVD had an interesting report about AFD. It is something to keep an eye on.
AFD is documented PRO Kremlin and wants to stop support to Ukraine and advocates cooperation with the Russian devils (something that one could with some suspicion call Molotov Ribbentrop 2.0).
Germany is after all the largest donor to Ukraine in absolute terms, so it is something to keep an eye on.
” Alice Weidel’s calculation is according to many analysts that the economic crisis will lead to a government crisis and new elections where AFD becomes the largest party – and a government without AFD is no longer possible.”

From the loudspeakers, the countdown roars: “Three, two, one, zero. Ignition. Lift off!” Music floods the room and German flags wave in the hall in East German Erfurt where Alternative for Germany, AfD, is holding its party congress.
“Now Germany’s new start begins,” shouts Alice Weidel, who has led the party together with Tino Chrupalla since 2022.
Shortly thereafter, the numbers from the re-election to the party leadership come in. Alice Weidel is re-elected with just over 81 percent of the votes. Tino Chrupalla, the party’s other leader, is supported by 70 percent, a drop of 10 percentage points from the 2024 election, and becomes the big loser of the party congress.
In the German media, it is described that Alice Weidel has now strengthened her grip on the party and is expanding her power position. Not least because this weekend she also managed to get several like-minded people into the party leadership, for example Sven Tritschler from North Rhine-Westphalia in western Germany, who was elected vice party leader.
Alice Weidel aims to make the party more respectable and above all more professional. Her message at the congress was: “We are strong, we are professional, and we are ready to take responsibility for Germany.”
Homophobic statements
At the same time, Alice Weidel represents the ambivalence that characterizes the party. She lives in a same-sex partnership with a filmmaker from Sri Lanka who loves the club scene in Berlin. In the ongoing election campaign in eastern Germany, however, AfD highlights the “intact family with father, mother, and children” as decisive for Germany’s future.

The election program contains formulations such as “abnormal sexual identities” and forms of cohabitation that threaten childbirth.
“I do not agree with that. I am considerably more liberal,” she said in an interview with the TV channel ntv at the party congress.
The question is only how liberal the party is. At the party congress in Erfurt, the issue was swept under the rug. All factional battles were subordinated to the goal of winning the three state elections this autumn. The most important is the election in East German Saxony-Anhalt on September 6, which AfD hopes will become the party’s big step towards power also at the national level.
AfD expert Oliver Lembcke at the University of Bochum describes Alice Weidel’s strategy as a smart way to exploit all the party’s currents. This applies partly to the party’s radical wing led by Björn Höcke, which provokes and appeals to everyone from right-wing extremists to radicalized protest voters. Partly to the more pragmatic and polished faction that tries to capture bourgeois voters disappointed with Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democratic CDU and the governing coalition with the Social Democrats SPD. This faction has its strongholds in western Germany and is more characterized by conservative liberalism.
Government power beckons in the East
In Saxony-Anhalt, AfD is polling over 40 percent, almost twice as much as Friedrich Merz’s Christian Democratic CDU. It is believed to have good chances to form a government together with BSW, which could be described as a populist left-wing party with nationalist elements.
A victory in Saxony-Anhalt would be a breakthrough for AfD. Never before has an extreme right-wing party governed a German state. But it is not only about symbolism but about political power. Partly because Saxony-Anhalt is part of the German parliament’s state chamber, the Bundesrat, which approves a large number of legislative proposals and constitutional amendments. Through this, the party thus gains direct national influence. Partly because the state government itself decides within core areas such as schools, culture, police, and internal security.

In the government in Berlin, Defense Minister Boris Pistorius warned this weekend that AfD could become a national security risk. “Their close relations to Putin are indisputable,” he told the newspaper Bild and warned against letting AfD ministers access classified security information.
The security service Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz has classified AfD as “suspected right-wing extremist” at the national level and clearly right-wing extremist in several states, including Saxony-Anhalt, where the party is considered anti-democratic and where leading AfD politicians describe migrants as parasites and occupiers, according to the state’s security report 2025.
Alice Weidel’s ambition is nevertheless to lead AfD to power also in Berlin. In the polls, AfD is Germany’s largest party with about 28 percent, clearly ahead of CDU and its Bavarian sister party CSU, which together get up to 24 percent. But so far the party is kept away from government power by the established parties’ red lines, the so-called firewall, or “Brandmauer.”
When will the red lines be erased?
At the forefront of the opposition stands Friedrich Merz, who has identified AfD as the main opponent and excludes cooperation. But Alice Weidel expects it is only a matter of time before the firewall loosens and then collapses.

At the congress in Erfurt, she highlighted the economic crisis in Germany and warned of deindustrialization and mass unemployment.
“Climate policy, support for Ukraine, and migration. All of this overloads Germany,” she said.
She called for cooperation with Russia and demanded that nuclear power be restarted.
“We listen and take ordinary people’s concerns seriously. We feel the anger and fear that will soon be needed no longer.
“The government turns a deaf ear.”
Alice Weidel’s calculation, according to many observers, is that the economic crisis will lead to a government crisis and new elections where AfD becomes the largest party – and a government without AfD is no longer possible.
